On November 12, 1985, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a landmark of the Free Church of Saint Mary-the-Virgin and the proposed designation of the related Landmarks Site (Item 17). The hearing was duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. At the public hearing the representatives of the Church, as well as one other speaker, took a position opposing designation. Subsequently the Church has expressed its support for designation. DESCRIPI'ION AND ANALYSIS Summary The Free Church of Saint Mary-the-Virgin complex, including the church, Clergy House, Mission House, Rectory and lady Chapel, was designed by Pierre L. LeBrun of Napoleon LeBrun & Sons in 1894. The church, long a center of Anglo-catholic worship, is a physical realization of the tenets of the Oxford Movement which sought to better the lives of the urban poor through nursing care, inspirational activity and the ritual of the Pre­ Reformation Church in England.     Landmarks Preservation Commission January 12, 2010, Designation List 425 LP-2343 311 BROADWAY BUILDING, 311 Broadway, Manhattan Built c. 1856-57; Architect not determined Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 151, Lot 31 On June 23, 2009, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the 311 Broadway Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 14). The hearing was duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Two people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of Council Member Alan J. Gerson and the Historic Districts Council. The Commission previously held a public hearing on this building on December 12, 1989 (LP-1755). Summary This distinguished commercial building located on the west side of Broadway between Duane and Thomas Streets was erected c. 1856- 57 by John and Daniel Jackson Steward. The building is a fine example of Italian Renaissance-inspired commercial palaces that flourished from the 1850s through the 1870s in the former wholesale textile and dry goods district of lower Manhattan. In the mid- nineteenth century, Broadway was the city’s most prestigious business and shopping street, lined with commercial palaces. Clad in stone, the building is articulated with a restrained design employing symmetrical square-headed windows with stone surrounds at the upper stories. Today, few mid-nineteenth century commercial palaces have survived on Broadway south of Franklin Street, making the 311 Broadway Building a rare survivor.     iV^sd THE GREATEST HIGHWAY IN THE WORLD Historical, Industrial and Descriptive In- formation of the Towns, Cities and Country passed through between New York and Chicago via The New York Central Lines Illustrated Based on the Encyclopaedia Britannica FOREWORD A*$ ^ 2, In furtherance of giving the utmost service to the public, the New York Central Lines asked the editors of the Encyclopaedia Britannica to prepare this booklet descriptive of and vivifying the historical develop- ment of what has been termed "The Greatest Highway in the World." It is presented to you in the hope that it may prove a pleasant com- panion on a journey over our Lines. The information will afford a new appreciation of the historical significance and industrial importance of the cities, towns and country which the New York Central Lines serve. The New York Central Lines enter twelve states and serve territory ' containing 51,530,784 inhabitants or 50.3 per cent of the nation's popula- tion. This rich and busy territory produces 64 per cent of the country's manufactured products and mines a similar proportion of its coal. This system does approximately 10 per cent of the railroad .transpor- tation business of the United States, although its main-track mileage is only 6 per cent. In other words the business it handles exceeds that of the average railroad, mile for mile, by nearly 100 per cent. The New York Central carries 52 per cent of all through passengers between New York and Chicago, the remaining 48 per cent being divided among five other lines.
