A Cinderella Tale” Introduction Dear Educator, As you make plans for your students to attend an upcoming presentation of the Arts for Youth program at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, we invite you to prepare your students by using this guide to assure that from beginning to end; the experience is both memorable and educationally enriching. The material in this guide is for you the teacher, and will assist you in preparing your students before the day of the event, and extending the educational value to beyond the walls of the theatre. We provide activity and/or discussion ideas, and other resources that will help to prepare your students to better understand and enjoy what they are about to see, and to help them connect what they see on stage to their studies. We also encourage you to discuss important aspects of the artistic experience, including audience etiquette. We hope that your students find their imagination comes alive as lights shine, curtains open, and applause rings through Lancaster Performing Arts Center. Arts for Youth is the title for K-12 educational programs at Lancaster Performing Arts Center 2 Happily Ever After Lancaster Performing Arts Center, City of Lancaster A Note from Pushcart Players Rooted in the belief that the arts are basic to many aspects of education, Pushcart Players is delighted to present “Happily Ever After,” based on the classic tale, “Cinderella.” Pushcart was drawn to this enduring story for many reasons. Its origins are informed by the universal longing to overcome adversity and it speaks to all of us who have a vision or a dream yet to be fulfilled. And, we never grow tired of its central themes of goodness, generosity and compassion. While it is filled with beauty, grandeur, magic and wonder, these components provide the backdrop for signifi- cant and timeless learning opportunities for today’s kids and adults. It is no wonder that this tale has been told and re- told around the globe over many centuries (its earliest known telling dates back to Ninth Century China.) More than a thousand years later this beloved story continues to tell us about ourselves, our yearnings for transformation and a happily ever after conclusion. And so we look forward to presenting “Happily Ever After—A Cinderella Tale” which will take young and family audiences on that sometimes happy, sometimes sad – but always compelling journey fueled by inner beauty, courage and kindness as they triumph over greed, arrogance and bully behavior. This study guide is designed to assist teachers, parents and group leaders in preparing students for the pre- sentation. It also offers suggestions for discussion, art and values tie-in activities following the program. It is our hope that the material suggested in this guide will be tailored to the age and interests of your students and presented in a nurturing and supportive classroom, recreation or home setting. Theatre Etiquette Arrive on time Plan for possible delays in travel and parking. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to show time. Students: Leave recording devices of any kind at home or in your backpack at school Video or audio recording and photography, including camera phones, are often prohibited by law and may disrupt the performance. They are not permitted and are considered very rude to the others around you. Teachers: Turn off or silence all personal electronics 3 Happily Ever After Lancaster Performing Arts Center, City of Lancaster Theatre Etiquette (Cont.) Beeps, clicks, tones and buzzes and light pollution emanated by personal electronics such as watches, pagers, Bluetooth devices, cell phones, etc. interrupt the performance and spoil the theatre experience. Observe the instructions of ushers The ushers are present to offer assistance, ensure rules are observed and provide guidance in the case of an emergency evacuation. Please show them consideration. You will be asked to exit to the left of the theatre at the end of the performance. Be respectful While entering and exiting the theatre: Put your hands in your pockets or behind your back. Talk very quietly. Once seated: Do not talk. Keep your feet on the ground. Put your hands in your lap or fold your arms. Abstain from eating or drinking inside the theatre Crackling wrappers and containers and food messes in the auditorium are unwelcome. Food, candy, gum and drinks should never be brought inside the theatre. Avoid talking, waving and shouting during the performance Laughing and applauding are encouraged at appropriate times. Shouting to actors/friends is disrespectful to others. Save personal conversation for after the show. If you must talk, please whisper very quietly. Do not exit the auditorium during the performance except in the case of emergency If you must leave, please wait for an appropriate break in the performance. Teachers, please arrive early enough to escort students to the restroom prior to the start of the show. Do not get onto the stage or place items on the edge of the stage To ensure the safety and security of performers and audiences, this behavior is strictly prohibited unless expressly permitted by a performer or staff member. Dispose of garbage in proper receptacles Help preserve a pleasant environment by depositing all debris in appropriate receptacles. Extend common courtesy and respect to your fellow audience members Civility creates a comfortable and welcoming theatre experience for all. Bring very small children only to age-appropriate performances Small children easily become restless at programs intended for older children, and may cause distractions. 4 Happily Ever After Lancaster Performing Arts Center, City of Lancaster Be a Theatre Critic During the performance watch for: • Facial expressions and actions • Costumes • Props • Music and sound effects • Vivid stories and word pictures Summary This production begins with a spoken Prologue set to music that provides an overview of the characters and events that come together to form the Cinderella tale. The story itself begins with Cinderella at a breaking point, suffering from the verbal abuse and demands of her stepmother and stepsisters. Exhausted and overwhelmed, we see her sobbing quietly. Her barnyard friends hear her and quickly come in to help her. The play moves forward in song and story following the classic sequence in the following scenes and musical num- bers: • Ella becomes Cinder-ella, working day and night to serve the needs of her stepfamily • Announcement of A Ball at the Palace for the Prince to find a Bride • The Step Sisters and Stepmother prepare and then leave for the Ball • A Godmother appears, Cinderella is magically transformed and goes to the Ball. • Cinderella dazzles everyone, especially the Prince, at the Ball • The clock strikes 12 and Cinderella runs home. All is as it was before. • The Prince finds a glass slipper and is determined to find the person who wore it. • The slipper is tried on many maidens, but it fits none, until Cinderella comes forward. 5 Happily Ever After Lancaster Performing Arts Center, City of Lancaster • Justice triumphs and dreams come true. Cinderella leaves for the Palace with the Prince. • Epilogue – also spoken to a musical underscore, this segment tells of what happened after Cinderella is escorted to the Palace to become the Bride of the Prince. • Finale - The Epilogue segues to a Finale that celebrates the story and the concept of reaching for a Happily Ever After conclusion. The Cinderella Story Read a simple, classic version of the Cinderella story to your class. Or present an old fashioned oral telling of the tale with group participation. At various intervals, ask “who knows what happened next?” Build the story through the additions supplied by

    From Book to Film: Ella Enchanted by Macario Ben Romero and Patricia Barker Fairy tales occupy a unique position in the literary canon. Although based on literary traditions, they have become an increasingly visual form in American culture due in large part to the works and films of Walt Disney which simplified and familiarized story lines in favor of technical artistry to “wow” the audience and which also sacrificed artistry for invention, tradition for innovation, and imagination for distraction (Zipes, “Towards” 7-8). For the most part, fairy tales of any culture are indicative of the morals and traditions of that culture: “fairy tales provide a unique window into our most central concerns, our sense of social and cultural identity, who we think we are (or should be) – and how we change” (Orenstein 8). Zipes clearly reaffirms this argument when discussing the French origins of the literary fairy tale: “the genre of the literary fairy tale was institutionalized as an aesthetic and social means through which questions and issues of civilite , proper behavior and demeanor in all types of situations, were mapped out as narrative strategies for literary socialization (Zipes, “Breaking” 23). For women, this socialization process can be insidious because as Vera Sonja Maass writes, “in their symbolic forms, fairy tales reinforce self-defeating social and psychological behavior patterns in women’s daily lives” (vii). Later, she writes that the older oral fairy tales descended from matriarchal societies which celebrated womanhood “had been transformed into a verbal version bearing a literate code that prescribed the domestic requirements in bourgeois Christian society necessary for a young woman to be acceptable for marriage: self-sacrifice, diligence, hard work, silence, humility, and patience” (5).

    The Effects of Disney Princess Movies on Girls By Camille Porter-Phillips Eighth grade project research paper Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School June 2014 1 Introduction Personally, before this project, I thought that the Disney princesses were foolish. People have been watching Disney movies for nearly 100 years and through the course of this project I realized that they are actually really foolish and my beliefs were affirmed. Since the Walt Disney company started in 1923 (Gillies), its movies have become very widespread and pervasive. My question is, have Disney princess movies affected girls? In this essay I will show that watching princess movies affects girls’ independence and body image. I will first give a background of Disney and their princesses, then show how the princess films might affect girls and then describe how to evaluate them. Background The first princess movie the Walt Disney company produced was Snow White, in 1937. It was the first animated feature film to come out of the0 U.S. (Disney). Next came Cinderella, in 1950. Then Sleeping Beauty in 1959. Thirty years later in 1989 The Little Mermaid came out. Then in 1991 Beauty and the Beast. The very next year in 1992 Aladdin came to theaters. Then Pocahontas, in 1995. But this was not the last one, more and more princess movies are produced by Disney every few years. Snow White is about a girl who runs away from an evil queen because the queen wants to kill Snow White. When she meets 12 dwarfs she is happy to cook and take care of them.

They are used not only to entertain, but often as teaching stories about the dangers and values of life. These very same stories are shared in many cultures around the world. Although they vary in characters, setting, and texture from one continent to the next, they remain some of the most powerful stories for teaching and learning during the early years. Folk and fairy tales have initiated children into the ways of the world probably from time immemorial. Many have changed over time to homogenize into the variety that we often see and hear today to meet a more generic audience, often leaving behind the tales geographic and social origins. By exposing students to a variety of multicultural renditions of a classic Fairy Tale they can begin to relate to these stories in new ways, leading to a richer literary experience. Fairy Tales written through ethnic eyes also give a great deal of cultural information, which can result in a richer experience for the students and students. We can then appreciate the origins and adaptations as they have migrated through time and space. These stories help to make sense of the world for young children. Folk and fairy tales were not meant only for entertainment, they provide a social identity, and instill values as well as teaching lessons. In my own experience I have found that classrooms are often filled with students that either come from other countries or have families that do.

    Course Proposal for the First Year Seminar Name: Elisabeth Gruner Department: English Availability (Fall and/or Spring Term; one or two sections): Fall 2010, Spring 2011 Approval of Department Chair: Title: Twice-Told Tales: Fairy Tales in Literary and Popular Culture Description of Course Content/Theme: The course will be a “case study” of a single tale type (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel & Gretel, etc.) Students will read, research, and find retellings, revisions, and parodies of the tale as well as other artistic expressions (music, film, novels, etc.) inspired by it as they consider the reasons for the persistence of fairy tales and their shifting meanings in different times and places. Briefly describe how the course will seek to achieve the five goals of the First Year Experience: 1. Expand students’ understanding of the world (e.g. state how the course will challenge students either to think about important questions and issues they may not have thought about before, or think about them in ways they have not thought about them). Students will explore familiar texts from several unfamiliar vantage points, including literary, historical, cross-cultural and psychological perspectives. 2. Enhance their ability to read and think critically (e.g. a preliminary list of books and articles for the course and exercises or pedagogical methods that will be used to improve critical reading and thinking). Possible texts for a case study of “Cinderella” and its variants: folk/fairy tale anthology—there are several good options here Cinderella: A Casebook, ed. Alan Dundes Burnett, A Little Princess Brontë, Jane Eyre Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Revisionary versions of “Cinderella” by Angela Carter, Anne Sexton, Robert Munsch, Babette Cole, Tanith Lee, Anne Thackeray Ritchie, Virginia Hamilton and others film versions of “Cinderella,” including Ashpet, An American Cinderella (1990); Cinderella (Disney; 1950); Ever After (1998); Cinderella (Rodgers & Hammerstein; 1997); etc.

  • The Case for Cinderella
    The Case for Cinderella Jenna Palme Cinderella is under attack in contemporary American media, and I won’t stand for it. Celebrities make headlines by announcing their children aren’t allowed to watch Cinderella because they believe the titular character represents misogynistic values, and they’re praised for it without question. They fear their daughters will mimic Cinderella’s actions and wait around for someone to save them instead of being progressive and saving themselves. When speaking out against Cinderella, many are only referring to the 1950 Disney film and not any other iterations. Even so, Cinderella is not a two-dimensional character who should be thrown in a pile of bad role models, never to be discussed again. Cinderella wasn’t a character created by Disney. It’s unknown when she was first created or by whom, but the story that most people know is from Charles Perrault’s “Cendrillion ou la petite pantoufle de verre” (Ribitsch 91), which differs only slightly from the Disney adaptation. Yet, Perrault didn’t write a single Cinderella story; he wrote two: “Donkeyskin” follows the same general tale type as “Cendrillion,” but the story greatly differs from the Cinderella story most people know. “Donkeyskin” may not be the story most people think of when they hear “Cinderella,” but the description of Cinderella that’s represented in popular culture because of Disney’s film comes from “Donkeyskin.” Perrault describes the girl with “lovely blond hair,” large blue eyes, ivory skin, and a “waist so small and fine that you could encircle it with two hands” (Perrault 161).
