Wilf Carter and the Calgary Stampede Connection by Fred Hauck, Collector, Redcliff, AB

Some of my earliest memories as a kid revolve around music; my Dad was very musical. He sang and played the guitar. He also bought records, 8-track and cassette tapes. In all cases there was a common denominator – Wilf Carter. Growing up, my Dad thought that Wilf Carter was the greatest singer ever; as did many others in western Canada. As a kid, I heard Wilf Carter regularly on the record player or on the 8-track player in our 1975 Chevrolet Impala, or on CFAC radio. As a family we did see Wilf in concert on several occasions. The last time I saw Wilf Carter was at the 1988 Calgary Stampede. Wilf was no stranger to the Stampede. He had performed there many times since the 1920’s. 10 • www.DiscoveringANTIQUES.com Here is his story: Wilfred Arthur Charles Carter was born, December 18, 1904, the son of a Baptist minister at Port Hilford, Guysborough County, . From an early age Wilf had a strong work ethic. There wasn’t a lot of money in the household; so Wilf, being one of the older children, went out to work to bring home money for the family. Wilf teamed oxen with a walking plow, picked apples in the orchards in Canning, Nova Scotia, and milked cows for a neighbour, John Tingley. Milking cows earned Wilf 25¢ a day. In 1916, walking home one day he noticed a poster on a telephone pole advertising a variety show that was coming to town. The last name on the poster was “The Yodeling Fool.” Not knowing anything about the man, Wilf was intrigued. Admission to the show was 25¢. When he got home, Wilf asked his father if he could keep 25¢ of his milking money to go to the show. His dad said. “No. It takes every 25¢ to keep the wolf from the door.” However, you guessed it; Wilf kept 25¢ back and went to the show anyway. The Postcard 1938 Promoting wilf Carter’s latest song book. Yodeling Fool made such an impression on him that he practised yodeling on the way home. When he got enough religion on Sundays then I should take you out there, he received a spanking from his father. This did behind the wood shed and teach you a lesson about not deter him, and he continued to practise yodeling religion on Sundays.” Wilf’s reply was, “I’m too old for every chance he got; very much against his parents’ you to be hitting me.” And his father replied, “If you wishes. are too old for me to be hitting you then you are too As a young boy he would come home from work old to be living in my house. Get out!” Wilf was only totally exhausted. One evening his dad asked why Wilf 12 ½ years old. He slept in a ditch that night and went wasn’t at the mid-week prayer meeting. His sister tried to work milking cows the next day. The farmer and his to defend him but his dad said, “If you think you get wife gave Wilf a place to stay until he decided to head out west. This was definitely a turning point for Wilf. In the 1920’s there were “Harvest Excursions.” Eastern folks headed west by rail to help with the harvesting in the vast western grain fields. A penniless Wilf got a farm job working for Merle Anderson at Carbon, Alberta. Merle Anderson also had a

Wilf’s big break came in December 1933 when he was given the opportunity to perform on the Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. cruise ship, The Empress of Britain, which was sailing to the West Indies. On his way to the ship, he was told to stop at the RCA Victor recording studios in to make a demonstration record. Wilf had written both of the songs he chose to record; “Swiss Moonlight Lullaby” and “The Capture of Albert Johnson.” The first song featured some spectacular yodeling which Wilf had developed. Until this time, yodeling had been very simple, but while working in the Badlands, Wilf had

Wilf tried to imitate the “echo” yodels and this chuckwagon outfit that he competed with annually at the Calgary Stampede. Wilf also took on the job of eardown man (one of the three-man team takes the horse’s ear in his mouth which is supposed to calm the horse) in the Stampede’s Wild Horse Race. The third event, the Wild Cow Milking Contest, Wilf tackled with his partner and good friend, Dick Cosgrave. Dick was also a chuckwagon driver and many time race winner who would later take on the position of Arena Director (at the Calgary Stampede) from Jack Dillon. Wilf become good friends with many Stampede legends like chuckwagon driver Tommy Dorchester and bronc riders Pete Knight, Harry Knight and Herman Linder. Wilf wrote many songs during that time such as “He Rode the Strawberry Roan” which is about Harry Knight; and “Pete Knight King of the Cowboys.” Pete was the person who convinced Wilf to quit the rodeo at the end of that year and Wilf agreed. On May 23, 1937 (the same year) Pete was killed at a rodeo in Hayward, California. Wilf wrote the song “Pete Knight’s Last Calgary Stampede Parade Marshal

The Stampede did claim one of Wilf’s songs, “The Calgary Roundup” as their official song for sometime. In 1964, Wilf was finally asked to perform solo for the large crowds at the Grandstand Show. This, he often said, was a great thrill for him. In 1984, Wilf was asked to be the Parade Marshall for the Calgary Stampede Parade, again, a real honour. Wilf always maintained a great many friends at the annual event. One such friend was Wilf Carter with author Fred Hauk just a few years ago!

If anyone has any information about acquiring one, please contact me, or contact Discovering ANTIQUES. One last note – no other single music artist, in any category of music, has had as many tribute songs and complete tribute albums done about them as Wilf Carter has had. The most recent one, that I am aware of, was done by a friend of mine Eli Barsi, as Wilf was one of her favourites. The album, “Darn Hard to Tame” is very well done and features some of my favourites and some yodeling. Thanks for the tribute, Eli.

Wilf did his last show, at age 87, Saturday June 13, 1991 in Trochu Alberta. He wanted to play the small towns that he had played in during the 1930’s. Wilf passed away December 4, 1996, at the age of 91. He had had a 60-year recording career, which was quite an accomplishment. Hundreds of records were produced during that time (78, 331/3 and 45 rpm), as well as eleven song books and a great many souvenir programs and pictures. In 1949, the Eaton’s department store actually sold a Wilf Carter Hillbilly outfit, and a guitar with a painted image of Wilf Carter, accompanied by song books for $9.95. These are not a common item. I have only seen one on eBay (needless

July/August 2010 • 19 Antiquing “The Tools of the Trade” by Susan Holme Manyluk, HolmeHus Antiques, Red Deer, AB

On May 29, 2010 I attended the Heritage Breeders Show and Sale at Sunnybrook Farm Museum. It was a really fun day, with lots of enthusiastic and interesting poultry people. I had no idea that so many old and rare breeds of domesticated fowl existed. Many have been brought back from near extinction by some of these people who care very passionately about preserving the past. A lot like certain antique collectors I can name! For any of you who may have forgotten – the last weekend of May was a 48-hour snowstorm. Here in Red Deer, we got at least 30 centimetres; some melted as it fell, but most lay in a cold, wet, over-the-ankles layer. Needless to say, that did cut into the attendance at the event. But, this did not deter the buyers, for breeders reported selling eighty percent of the many birds they had brought to the show, including day-old chicks that

We did get some extra traffic in the shop on Sunday, from folks too cold to linger and look, during Saturday’s white- out. Most notably, the two young ladies who deserve an award for being brave enough to show up in flip-flops, capris and sweaters, while the rest of us were having a huge parka party. Only in Alberta can we have fun like that after the leaves are out on the trees! In the last issue of Discovering ANTIQUES I promised to return to The Blooming Fields to tell you about some other “tools of the trade.” These were used by Pim van Oeveren in his native Holland in order to pursue his chosen calling as a nursery-man, landscape artist and Master Gardener. We could probably have sold a dozen egg scales – everyone had to try the one and only model I have ever come across. It is a simple fulcrum balance scale, with a flat pan on one end with four holes, in one of which to park the egg. Its weight, of course, determines the size grade of that egg. I have tested the scale’s accuracy many times with store-bought eggs; a “small” is always a small, and it differentiates accurately between large and extra large.

Very simple, very accurate, very in demand. I turned Chair converted into a playtable

Tools of the trade…those things of a practical and totally functional nature that made hard jobs easier, faster and more efficient. When much of the work on the farm or ranch, in the kitchen and the home, was still done by hand, these were the tools that helped. They did not plug in, turn on, break down or give out the way modern conveniences so often do. Perhaps that is why many budding collectors are first intrigued by these work-a-day items. And if you don’t have asparagus to harvest, apple trees to graft, eggs to collect, or cheese to store, having a few “tools of the trade” just for display purposes, works too. These are reminders of the sense of accomplishment that results from hard work, the joy of good eating, or the pleasure of a job well done.

Gruyere and various Cheddars have won many awards and are sublime eating. Only the milk from their own dairy cows is used because they are handled and fed in the stress-free and healthful ways which were perfected in Holland for generations. While the cheese-making equipment and retail space are state-of-the-art, the recipes and cheese-making “knack” have been passed down in the family. Those people who favour artisan cheeses, local produce, naturally raised, hormone-free meat and rural shopping at a source like Sylvan Star Cheese; are also those people who place some degree of importance on cooking and serving such wonderful ingredients successfully. Thus a selection of vintage, out-of-print and all-time favourite cookbooks, is an excellent addition to their stock-in-trade. They also carry a few period cheese keepers, some old butter dishes, vintage milk pitchers and cream jugs, grated cheese dispensers and other collectable and functional “tools-of-the- cheese-trade.” Sylvan Star is indeed a place to do some antiquing, as well as sourcing locally grown groceries. July/August 2010 • 31 Commode, Boulle Style. The Pictoral Encyclopedia of ANTIQUES he was tired of the court intrigues, the manipulations, the extravagant parties and the battles. His treasury chest was empty and he lost control over his decorators. Together with Madame de Maintenon, he escaped the hustle and bustle more and more and retreated to smaller and more intimate apartments at the palace or at Trianon, a little hide-away on the grounds of Versailles. A combination of the bourgeois preference of Madame de Maintenon and the fact that their living space was reduced significantly, slowly converted the King’s pompous taste. There was no more massive and elaborate furniture. There was a need for smaller and lighter pieces, the beginning of the style called French Regence. This period and that of Louis XV will be covered in an upcoming article. King Louis XIV died in 1715. He did not leave a full treasury chest, but he did leave a legacy.
