He sang and played the guitar. He also bought records, 8-track and cassette tapes. In all cases there was a common denominator – Wilf Carter. Growing up, my Dad thought that Wilf Carter was the greatest singer ever; as did many others in western Canada. As a kid, I heard Wilf Carter regularly on the record player or on the 8-track player in our 1975 Chevrolet Impala, or on CFAC radio. As a family we did see Wilf in concert on several occasions. The last time I saw Wilf Carter was at the 1988 Calgary Stampede. Wilf was no stranger to the Stampede. He had performed there many times since the 1920’s. 10 • www.DiscoveringANTIQUES.com Here is his story: Wilfred Arthur Charles Carter was born, December 18, 1904, the son of a Baptist minister at Port Hilford, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. From an early age Wilf had a strong work ethic. There wasn’t a lot of money in the household; so Wilf, being one of the older children, went out to work to bring home money for the family. Wilf teamed oxen with a walking plow, picked apples in the orchards in Canning, Nova Scotia, and milked cows for a neighbour, John Tingley. Milking cows earned Wilf 25¢ a day. In 1916, walking home one day he noticed a poster on a telephone pole advertising a variety show that was coming to town. The last name on the poster was “The Yodeling Fool.” Not knowing anything about the man, Wilf was intrigued. Admission to the show was 25¢. When he got home, Wilf asked his father if he could keep 25¢ of his milking money to go to the show. His dad said. “No. It takes every 25¢ to keep the wolf from the door.” However, you guessed it; Wilf kept 25¢ back and went to the show anyway. The Postcard 1938 Promoting wilf Carter’s latest song book. Yodeling Fool made such an impression on him that he practised yodeling on the way home. When he got enough religion on Sundays then I should take you out there, he received a spanking from his father. This did behind the wood shed and teach you a lesson about not deter him, and he continued to practise yodeling religion on Sundays.” Wilf’s reply was, “I’m too old for every chance he got; very much against his parents’ you to be hitting me.” And his father replied, “If you wishes. are too old for me to be hitting you then you are too As a young boy he would come home from work old to be living in my house. Get out!” Wilf was only totally exhausted. One evening his dad asked why Wilf 12 ½ years old. He slept in a ditch that night and went wasn’t at the mid-week prayer meeting. His sister tried to work milking cows the next day. The farmer and his to defend him but his dad said, “If you think you get wife gave Wilf a place to stay until he decided to head out west. This was definitely a turning point for Wilf. In the 1920’s there were “Harvest Excursions.” Eastern folks headed west by rail to help with the harvesting in the vast western grain fields. A penniless Wilf got a farm job working for Merle Anderson at Carbon, Alberta. Merle Anderson also had a Continued on Page 12 Wilf Carter’s ranch in Cremona, AB. Wilf’s big break came in December 1933 when he was given the opportunity to perform on the Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. cruise ship, The Empress of Britain, which was sailing to the West Indies. On his way to the ship, he was told to stop at the RCA Victor recording studios in Montreal to make a demonstration record. Wilf had written both of the songs he chose to record; “Swiss Moonlight Lullaby” and “The Capture of Albert Johnson.” The first song featured some spectacular yodeling which Wilf had developed. Until this time, yodeling had been very simple, but while working in the Badlands, Wilf had 1947 Simpson catalogue guitar. practised his yodeling into canyons which echoed back. Wilf tried to imitate the “echo” yodels and this chuckwagon outfit that he competed with annually at the Calgary Stampede. Wilf also took on the job of eardown man (one of the three-man team takes the horse’s ear in his mouth which is supposed to calm the horse) in the Stampede’s Wild Horse Race. The third event, the Wild Cow Milking Contest, Wilf tackled with his partner and good friend, Dick Cosgrave. Dick was also a chuckwagon driver and many time race winner who would later take on the position of Arena Director (at the Calgary Stampede) from Jack Dillon.
