Alberta Mix Tape Alberta Mix Tape These are songs ABOUT Alberta, not necessarily by Albertans. For you to enjoy while out doing Alberta history or just to enjoy, the Historical Society of Alberta has put together this list of songs. Who knows, as you listen to some great music, you may even learn more about the history and people of this phenomenal province. Note: we have been able to find and listen to 200 or so of these songs through CDs and downloadable sources but some were never recorded and, indeed, may not have been sung or played in many years. Some of these songs are, today, simply sheet music to be found in archives and libraries across the province. For the purposes of our list, a song must be about an Alberta place, person or event (in whole or in part). We have given the list twice – first time by song title (complete list), second time by artist. If you know of songs missing from the list, please send them our way: 403-261-3662 or [email protected]. • “Waiting for a Train” in Canada
“Waiting for a Train” in Canada Tim Rogers, University of Calgary With considerable help from Roy Forbes, Fred Isenor, Michael Kolonel, John Leeder, Giselle and Keith Smith, Frank Watson, and Ted Rowe It was a good jam despite my guitar being outnum- square dances, and in sessions whenever he found bered two to one by banjos. At one point I sang Jim- like-minded musicians. (Leeder 2013) mie Rodgers’s “Waiting for a Train” (a.k.a. “All Around the Water Tank”). I’d known this song for Whatever the source, Gerry knew “Waiting for a years, but had recently dusted it off after hearing Roy Train” in waltz time. Forbes’s fine version.1 Waiting for a Train (Jimmie Rodgers’s version) All around the water tank, waiting for a train, A thousand miles away from home, sleeping in the rain; I walked up to a freight man to give him a line of talk, He said, “If you’ve got money, I’ll see that you don’t walk”; “I haven’t got a nickel, not a penny can I show”, “Get off, get off, you railroad bum,” and he slammed the boxcar door. Well, they put me off in Texas, a state I dearly love, Wide open spaces around me, moon and stars above; Nobody seems to want me or lend me a helping hand, I’m on my way from Frisco, going back to Dixieland; My pocket book is empty and my heart is full of pain, I’m a thousand miles away from home, waiting for a train.

  • Stu Davis: Canada's Cowboy Troubadour
Stu Davis: Canada’s Cowboy Troubadour by Brock Silversides Stu Davis was an immense presence on Western Canada’s country music scene from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. His is a name no longer well-known, even though he was continually on the radio and television waves regionally and nationally for more than a quarter century. In addition, he released twenty-three singles, twenty albums, and published four folios of songs: a multi-layered creative output unmatched by most of his contemporaries. Born David Stewart, he was the youngest son of Alex Stewart and Magdelena Fawns. They had emigrated from Scotland to Saskatchewan in 1909, homesteading on Twp. 13, Range 15, west of the 2nd Meridian.1 This was in the middle of the great Regina Plain, near the town of Francis. In 1920 they moved into Regina where Alex found employment as a gardener, then as a teamster for the City of Regina Parks Board. The family moved frequently: city directories show them at 1400 Rae Street (1921), 1367 Lorne North (1923), 929 Edgar Street (1924-1929), 1202 Elliott Street (1933-1936), 1265 Scarth Street for the remainder of the 1930s, and 1178 Cameron Street through the war years.2 Through these moves the family kept a hand in farming, with a small farm 12 kilometres northwest of the city near the hamlet of Boggy Creek, a stone’s throw from the scenic Qu’Appelle Valley.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

July 4, 2016 MEDIA FYI 2016 Calgary Stampede Parade Marshals: Jann Arden and Paul Brandt CALGARY, ALBERTA – Calgary Stampede Parade Marshals occupy a prestigious place in the history of the Calgary Stampede. Among other things, they exemplify western heritage, values, and culture. 2016 Parade Marshals: Jann Arden and Paul Brandt In honour of our city’s “Year of Music” celebration, singer-songwriter Jann Arden and homegrown country music superstar Paul Brandt will lead the Calgary Stampede Parade. Fresh off hosting the 2016 Juno Awards, Calgary-born Arden is a singer, songwriter, broadcaster and author. Whether she is captivating audiences with her heartfelt music, entertaining them with her quick wit or sharing her written word in a boldly honest voice – Arden is a Canadian original – a brilliant multi-dimensional talent. Brandt, the most awarded male Canadian Country Music artist in history, had an unlikely journey of humble beginnings and big dreams to fame and stardom. A true Calgary Stampede friend, Brandt headlined the stage for all 10 nights of the 2012 Centennial TransAlta Grandstand Show. History of the Parade Marshal One of the Calgary Stampede’s oldest and proudest traditions is the role of Stampede Parade Marshal. The Parade Marshal not only leads the Parade, but is also a reflection of the values and culture of the community. The very first Calgary Stampede Parade in 1912 was led by 1,800 members of the Treaty 7 First Nations at the request of Stampede visionary, Guy Weadick. People marveled at the grandeur and splendor of seeing 1,800 First Nations people from five different tribes dressed in their traditional regalia.
