Alberta Mix Tape Alberta Mix Tape These are songs ABOUT Alberta, not necessarily by Albertans. For you to enjoy while out doing Alberta history or just to enjoy, the Historical Society of Alberta has put together this list of songs. Who knows, as you listen to some great music, you may even learn more about the history and people of this phenomenal province. Note: we have been able to find and listen to 200 or so of these songs through CDs and downloadable sources but some were never recorded and, indeed, may not have been sung or played in many years. Some of these songs are, today, simply sheet music to be found in archives and libraries across the province. For the purposes of our list, a song must be about an Alberta place, person or event (in whole or in part). We have given the list twice – first time by song title (complete list), second time by artist. If you know of songs missing from the list, please send them our way: 403-261-3662 or [email protected]. • “Waiting for a Train” in Canada
“Waiting for a Train” in Canada Tim Rogers, University of Calgary With considerable help from Roy Forbes, Fred Isenor, Michael Kolonel, John Leeder, Giselle and Keith Smith, Frank Watson, and Ted Rowe It was a good jam despite my guitar being outnum- square dances, and in sessions whenever he found bered two to one by banjos. At one point I sang Jim- like-minded musicians. (Leeder 2013) mie Rodgers’s “Waiting for a Train” (a.k.a. “All Around the Water Tank”). I’d known this song for Whatever the source, Gerry knew “Waiting for a years, but had recently dusted it off after hearing Roy Train” in waltz time. Forbes’s fine version.1 Waiting for a Train (Jimmie Rodgers’s version) All around the water tank, waiting for a train, A thousand miles away from home, sleeping in the rain; I walked up to a freight man to give him a line of talk, He said, “If you’ve got money, I’ll see that you don’t walk”; “I haven’t got a nickel, not a penny can I show”, “Get off, get off, you railroad bum,” and he slammed the boxcar door. Well, they put me off in Texas, a state I dearly love, Wide open spaces around me, moon and stars above; Nobody seems to want me or lend me a helping hand, I’m on my way from Frisco, going back to Dixieland; My pocket book is empty and my heart is full of pain, I’m a thousand miles away from home, waiting for a train.

Exploring human experience in the North research arƟ cle “Indigenizing” the Bush Pilot in CBC’s ArcƟ c Air Renée Hulan Saint Mary’s University, Halifax Abstract When the Canadian BroadcasƟ ng CorporaƟ on (CBC) cut original programming in 2014, it cancelled the drama that had earned the network’s highest raƟ ngs in over a decade. Arc c Air, based on Omni Films’ reality TV show Buff alo Air, created a diverse cast of characters around a Dene bush pilot and airline co-owner played by Adam Beach. Despite its cancellaƟ on, episodes can sƟ ll be viewed on the CBC website, and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has conƟ nued broadcasƟ ng the popular show. Through a content analysis of Arc c Air and its associated paratext, read in relaƟ on to the stock Canadian literary fi gure of the heroic bush pilot, this arƟ cle argues that when viewed on the CBC, the program visually “Indigenizes” the bush pilot character, but suggests only one way forward for Indigenous people. On the “naƟ onal broadcaster,” the imagined urban, mulƟ cultural North of Arc c Air—in which Indigenous people are one cultural group among others parƟ cipaƟ ng in commercial ventures—serves to normalize resource development and extracƟ on. Broadcast on APTN, however, where the show appears in the context of programming that represents Indigenous people in a wide range of roles, genres, and scenarios, Arc c Air takes on new meaning. Keywords: media; television; Canadian North; content analysis The Northern Review 43 (2016): 139–162 Published by Yukon College, Whitehorse, Canada yukoncollege.yk.ca/review 139 In 2013, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) lost the broadcast rights to Hockey Night in Canada, a contract that the private broadcaster Rogers Media secured for $5.2 billion.

  • Stu Davis: Canada's Cowboy Troubadour
Stu Davis: Canada’s Cowboy Troubadour by Brock Silversides Stu Davis was an immense presence on Western Canada’s country music scene from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. His is a name no longer well-known, even though he was continually on the radio and television waves regionally and nationally for more than a quarter century. In addition, he released twenty-three singles, twenty albums, and published four folios of songs: a multi-layered creative output unmatched by most of his contemporaries. Born David Stewart, he was the youngest son of Alex Stewart and Magdelena Fawns. They had emigrated from Scotland to Saskatchewan in 1909, homesteading on Twp. 13, Range 15, west of the 2nd Meridian.1 This was in the middle of the great Regina Plain, near the town of Francis. In 1920 they moved into Regina where Alex found employment as a gardener, then as a teamster for the City of Regina Parks Board. The family moved frequently: city directories show them at 1400 Rae Street (1921), 1367 Lorne North (1923), 929 Edgar Street (1924-1929), 1202 Elliott Street (1933-1936), 1265 Scarth Street for the remainder of the 1930s, and 1178 Cameron Street through the war years.2 Through these moves the family kept a hand in farming, with a small farm 12 kilometres northwest of the city near the hamlet of Boggy Creek, a stone’s throw from the scenic Qu’Appelle Valley.

  • The Legacies of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada's Prairie Provinces
A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE: THE LEGACIES OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AIR TRAINING PLAN IN CANADA'S PRAIRIE PROVINCES by Allan Newell B.A. University of British Columbia, 2005 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUGUST 2007 © Allan Newell, 2007 ABSTRACT The establishment of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) saw the creation of more than one hundred air training schools across the country. In the West, the wide-open spaces facilitated many of these sites, and a sophisticated network of airfields sprang up across the prairies almost overnight. The substantial and enduring impact of the BCATP's airfields and schools in the Canadian West is curiously overlooked by historians, who (for the most part) often focus on the Plan's overall operation at the expense of its lasting influence. The construction of the BCATP sites prompted extensive modernisation of the existing infrastructure in many of the small communities selected for schools. Moreover, the vast sums of money poured into the region and the tens of thousands of Commonwealth airmen who came to train at the airfields had a significant and long-term cultural and economic impact on the region. Along with improved infrastructure, the BCATP brought a new cosmopolitanism and a strong regional affinity for the Air Force. More importantly, the Plan influenced the perceptions and perceived roles of women in the prairies and has had an enduring effect on the Canadian women's movement. In the postwar years, the demographics of the prairies shifted as thousands of BCATP alumni returned to take-up residence in the region they had trained in, while at the same time Canadian war brides departed to be with their new husbands abroad.

Please help us to provide you with a good service, by resubscribing to the society Is this email not displaying correctly? in a timely manner each year View it in your browser. Wind in the Wires Welcome to the sixth quarterly newsletter from Cross & Cockade International, bringing you all that's new and interesting in the world of WW1 aviation. Doesn't time fly - it's now eighteen months since our first! The autumn edition of the journal landed on my mat this morning. Everyone in the UK should receive theirs over the next few days. If you're overseas and subscribed via airmail, you'll probably get yours next week. If you live outside Europe and subscribe surface mail, I'm afraid you may have a much longer wait - and might want to consider subscribing airmail for 2014. The postal services are positively discouraging surface post - in the US and Australia delivery can up to an extra 10 weeks. As usual we have a fine selection of articles for your delectation - on a wide variety of subjects. First up is a fascinating piece by Michael Kelsey on 47 Sqn's use of the "Little Ack" in Macedonia. Staying with the Macedonian theme, we also have a great piece by Boris Ciglic titled "Premier Serbian Fighters", on the use of French fighters with Serb forces in WW1. We have the second article on Guy Duncan Smith, plus one on his brother, Harold Beaumont Smith. We also have the continuation of Mick Davis' excellent series "Gazetteer of UK Flying Sites" (which gets to Pett) and Paul Leaman's "Atlas of German & Foreign Seaplanes", which reaches Zeppelin-Staaken.
