PAYNE COUNTY 4-H FABRICS & FASHION REVUE CONTEST GUIDELINES

Contest: Tuesday, April 17, 2018 Check-in at 5:30 p.m./Contest starts at 6:00 p.m. Location: Lost Creek United Methodist Church, 8002 S. Washington Street (South of Stillwater, between Stillwater and Perkins)

Level 1 (8,9 &10 year olds) Members may enter sewn items in up to 3 categories. Each project must use at least 2 of the skills to be learned in Level 1 project work. Skills to learn:  Attaching  Basting  Constructing a casing  Gathering  Hemming  seams accurately - with correct width and appropriate  Finishing seams  Constructing an elastic waistband  Laying out a

Level 1 Exhibits Apparel Design & Construction  Sewn Garments o Simple tops (shirt, tank top, vest, etc.) o Simple bottoms (shorts, capris, pants, skirts, etc.) o Costumes  Non-Human Apparel (doll clothes, pet or livestock garment)  Sewn Fashion Accessory (sewn hats, scarves, bag, wallet, etc.) Interior Design & Construction  Home Accent Items for Bath, Bedroom or Storage (rug, curtains, caddy, decorative towel, trash can, pillow, pillow case, blanket, bulletin board, storage container, etc.)  Bags (laundry, jewelry, cosmetic, book/electronic cover, etc.)  Seasonal Decor (sewn wall hanging or table runner, or other sewn decoration) Hobbies/ Design and Construction  Sewn Stuffed Animal, Doll or Puppet  Quilt Block (hand pieced, machine pieced or appliqued, not quilted, no larger than 16"x16")

Level 2 (11&12 year olds) Members may enter sewn items in up to 3 categories. Each project must use at least 2 of the skills to be learned in Level 2 project work. Skills to learn:  Attaching buttons and/or creating holes  Basting by hand or machine  Constructing a casing with edge stitching on top and finishing at insertion points  Constructing a collar or cuff  Sewing darts  Sewing a along a , waistline or armhole  Attaching fasteners such as hooks & eyes or snaps  Gathering  Hemming by machine or hand  Applying - fusible or sew-in  Matching patterned fabric  Constructing  Sewing a pocket in a seam or attaching a patch pocket  Applying seam techniques: matching cross seams, top stitched seam, welt seam  Finishing seams appropriately  Using a serger  Constructing a waistband with interfacing  Applying a

Level 2 Exhibits (11&12 year olds) Apparel Design & Construction  Sewn Garments o One piece garment with facing (robe, jacket, dress, shooting vest, etc.) o Simple bottoms with pocket and/or waistband or facing (shorts, capris, pants, skirts, etc.) o Two Piece Garment (top & bottom, jacket/vest with bottom/dress, PJ's, etc.) o Costumes  Non-Human Apparel (doll clothes, pet or livestock garment)  Sewn Fashion Accessory (sewn hats, scarves, bag, wallet, etc.) Interior Design & Construction  Home Accent Items for Bedroom, Kitchen or Storage (rug, curtains, caddy, decorative towels (2), trash can, pillows (2), pillow cases (2), blanket with , message board, table cloth or runner, potholders, apron, lunch bag, placemat and napkins, appliance cover, hanging storage under-bed storage, basket liners, etc.)  Bags (laundry, jewelry, cosmetic, book/electronic cover, garment bag, etc.)  Seasonal Decor (sewn wall hanging or table runner, or other sewn decoration) Hobbies/Textiles Design and Construction  Sewn Stuffed Animal, Doll or Puppet (with hand and machine stitching)  Hand pieced, Machine pieced or Appliqued Item, (No quilting on item, finished edges or framed, no larger than 16"x16")

Level 3 (13&14 year olds) Members may enter sewn items in up to 3 categories. Each project must use at least 2 of the skills to be learned in Level 3 project work. Skills to learn:  Using applique as a decorative  Attaching buttons and/or creating button holes  Basting by hand or machine  Constructing a casing with edge stitching on top and finishing at insertion points  Constructing a collar or cuff  Sewing darts  Sewing a facing along a neckline, waistline or armhole  Attaching fasteners such as hooks & eyes, snaps, velcro, magnetic closure, or closure.  Gathering  Hemming by machine, hand or decorative  Applying interfacing - fusible or sew-in  Adding a  Matching patterned fabric  Constructing pleats (box pleats, knife pleats, inverted pleats or tucks)  Sewing a pocket in a seam or attaching a patch pocket or adding a welt pocket  Applying seam techniques: welt seam, lapped seam, French seam, flat-  Finishing seams with or a Hong Kong finish  Using a serger to apply ribbing or make decorative trims  Attaching sleeves - set-in, flat insert, cap, raglan, or kimono  Staystitching  Applying decorative - , pique, rick rack, braid, lace, beads, ribbon, soutache  Using topstitching for practical and decorative purposes  Applying a zipper

Level 3 Exhibits (13&14 year olds) Apparel Design & Construction  Sewn Garments o Blouse/Shirt with Sleeves and Closure o One Piece Garment with and/or Zipper (shirt, robe, jacket, dress, vest, etc.) o Bottom with Zipper and/or Pocket (shorts, capris, pants, skirts, etc.) o Two Piece Garment (top & bottom, jacket/vest with bottom/dress, PJ's, etc.) o Costumes (human or non-human)  Sewn Fashion Accessory (with closure fastener and seams) Interior Design & Construction  Home Accent Items for Living Room or Bedroom (slipcovers, lined curtains, pillows, lap throw, remote caddy, ottoman, mantel scarf; 2 coordinating bedroom items: bedspread, dust , pillow shams, lined curtains, dresser scarf, hanging storage, under-bed storage, garment bag, etc.)  "Special Needs" Accessory -("Special Needs" being the individual requirements of a person with mental, emotional, physical disability or disease. A functional item with a description of who it was made for, why the need and any pertinent information.)  Seasonal Decor (sewn wall hanging or table runner, or other sewn decoration) Hobbies/Textiles Design and Construction  Sewn Stuffed Animal, Doll or Puppet (with multiple hand and machine sewing techniques)  Hand pieced, Machine pieced or Appliqued Item, (finished with hand or machine quilting which must be done by the exhibitor)

Level 4 (15 & up) Members may enter sewn items in up to 3 categories. Each project must use at least 2 of the skills to be learned in Level 4 project work. Skills to learn:  Using applique as a decorative embellishment  Creating button holes and/or covered buttons  Creating and applying bias tape  Constructing a collar or cuff  Applying a couture or historic technique to the project  Attaching fasteners such as hooks & eyes, snaps, velcro, magnetic closure, frog closure, button loops, hook & bar.  Hemming by machine, hand or decorative hem  Applying interfacing - fusible or sew-in  Adding a lining  Mitering corners  Sewing a side pocket (with 2 or 3 pieces) or a welt pocket  Applying seam techniques: slot seam, tucked seam, lapped seam, French seam, flat-felled seam  Finishing seams with bias tape or a Hong Kong finish  Using a serger to apply ribbing or make decorative trims  Attaching sleeves - set-in, flat insert, cap, raglan, or kimono  Staystitching  Applying decorative trim - piping, pique, rick rack, braid, lace, beads, ribbon, soutache  Applying a zipper

Level 4 Exhibits (15 & up) Apparel Design & Construction  Sewn Garments o One Piece Lined or Unlined Garment (pants, skirt, coat, jacket, dress, etc.) o Lined or Unlined Two Piece Ensemble/Coordinate (coat/jacket/vest, dress, suit, etc.) o Costumes (human or non-human, with historical or cultural significance)  Sewn Fashion Accessory or Garment designed for "Special Needs"- ("Special Needs" being the individual requirements of a person with mental, emotional, physical disability or disease. A functional item with a description of who it was made for, why the need and any pertinent information.)
