Dr. Joe Lstiburek

Fox TV may have Doctor Oz. NBC may have Doctor Phil, but on December 12, 2018 the GHBA will bring you Doctor Joe live and in person. Dr. Joe Lstiburek is the #1 authority on building science and is known for diagnosing what ills modern homes. He will present three separate and unique sessions covering all things building science. Buy your tickets for one session or all three. Here’s what to expect: Morning session: 9:00 – 11:-00 Houston: Stucco - Don’t Get Stuck A long, long time ago, in a Gulf Coast region not too far away, somebody thought it would be a great idea to build homes with stucco on the outside. Stucco used to work but now it doesn’t. What changed? Can it be made to work? Yes, of course. But things need to be done dif- ferently. After many years we have almost figured out how to do this correctly. Based on the number of repairs being done around the city however, it looks like we haven’t quite mastered it yet. Dr. Joe will share his ideas of how to do stucco correctly. Be prepared to see some ugly pictures along the way that illustrate what happens when this stuff goes horribly wrong. Before you slap this concrete-like stuff on the side of your newly constructed home spend a couple hours with Joe to see if you can sleep easy at night. Lunch session: 12:00 – 2:00 Indoor Rain & Fuzzy Things “I don’t get it! I’ve been building homes for years. My houses never did this before. What’s the deal?” No good deed shall go unpunished. The irony is deep. As we build better we have more humidity problems. We don’t build houses like we used to and now all sorts of things are hap- pening and if you don’t understand the basic principles of building science you’ll be lost when trying to figure it out. Modern homes are really tight and really well built. Because of this moisture has become the number one issue in modern homes. As you read this you probably have some homes with indoor rain and they may even be growing fuzzy stuff somewhere. How can this be? Dr. Joe will introduce us to this crazy thing called psychrometrics and what is really happening in our homes. Then he will share the good news about how all this can be managed. Afternoon session: 2:30 – 4:30 “The House Whisperer” - Ask Dr. Joe Anything So, after a day with Joe you might just have a question or two that did not get answered. Maybe you have a topic you would like some input on. This is the man to answer those questions. There is so much happening in our industry that we cannot simply fit it into a box. Building sci- ence, building codes and standards, moisture, mold, materials, wall profiles, or maybe even the next generation of home building techniques are all open for discussion. Take lots of notes in these two hours – you’ll learn a lot!! *To complete our time with Dr. Joe, this last session is actually the first in a new series we are starting called “The House Whisperer Series”. In 2019 the GHBA will present this special speaker series to expand on our usual lineup of classes. Watch your GHBA newsletter for details.
