Her name is Alyssa Nakken. She was a former standout softball player at Sacramento State University. Her task will be "helping to build a winning culture in the clubhouse," according to Giants Manager Gabe Kapler. Nakken has worked with the Giants since 2014 when she began as an intern. An intern is a person who is training at a job in order to gain experience. Recently, she has overseen health and wellness programs for the team. She played first base for Sacramento State from 2009 through 2012. She earned many awards during her time at school. She won the Academic All-American award four times and was the 2012 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Another coach was also added to the Giants on January 16. His name is Mark Hallberg. Puzey* INTRODUCTION Imagine yourself as a child. I know, I know, it seems a little silly and perhaps even oxymoronic to try to imagine simpler times while reading a legal article, but I implore you to do so. Each of us had something that we aspired to become, be it a racecar driver or a rock star, a ballerina or a ball-player. Do you remember what your aspiration was? For many kids, early dreams and aspira- tions planted the seed for a real career—a seed that gradually blossomed as those children learned what they liked and what they ultimately desired. That tiny seed of “make believe” helped them to decide how to achieve their particu- lar career choice. Would-be doctors began studying extra hard and taking advanced classes. Hopeful singers belted out tunes at the top of their lungs and enrolled in vocal lessons. Aspiring baseball players joined local teams, where they worked hard at practice—running sprints, catching flies, taking extra cuts, and lifting weights. Slowly, but surely, dreams began to morph into reality. In today’s society, laws of equal opportunity generally promote and encourage children of both genders to pursue whichever career choice they desire.1 Little girls who dream of becoming baseball players, however, do not have this opportunity. Instead, Title IX’s Contact Sports Exemption essentially denies women the chance to pursue baseball as a legitimate career, or even to play the sport at the collegiate level.

    Darren Zaslau Independent Major Honors Project Race, Ethnicity and the Legacy of Baseball in the Americas ADVISORS: Daphne John and Jay Ashby Baseball is America’s Pastime. When looKing at its history in our modern day, it is difficult to imagine the racism and hate, which will always remain implanted in the roots of the game. From the Negro Leagues of 1920, to the racism surrounding Roberto Clemente, Hispanic players, and other racial minorities, the struggles of the past will never be forgotten. Although its history was filled with periods of adversity, the current inclusive state that baseball currently presents is truly remarKable. Analyzing these positive trends toward racial inclusion overtime will be the main focus of this independent major honors research project. In addition, understanding where the sport has come from, its current state, and attempting to predict the future will be extremely important aspects for deeper analysis. Individual baseball icons that opened the door for the current racial minority participants such as JacKie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, and Masanori MuraKami will all be discussed in order to understand baseball’s true pastime. Current events including the World Baseball Classic, the Little League World Series dominance of Asian teams, and the 2016 Tampa Bay Rays trip to Cuba are other areas of investigation to show how the culture has changed in the 20th century. Finally, this project will predict the future of baseball to fully process the impacts that these athletes and Key events have had on the sport. As a result of the increased racial inclusion over time, will racism in baseball decrease?     A’s News Clips, Tuesday, February 22, 2011 Kevin Kouzmanoff says he's still happy to be with Oakland A's despite team's efforts to replace him By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune PHOENIX -- Kevin Kouzmanoff emphasized Monday that he's happy to still be an Athletic, which is noteworthy after an offseason in which the A's searched aggressively to replace him at third base. Kouzmanoff said his feelings weren't hurt that the A's made a reported six-year, $76 million offer to free agent Adrian Beltre. Or that they talked with the Seattle Mariners about trading for Chone Figgins. "I feel like I'm ready to have a productive year, and I want to help the team make the playoffs and win a championship," he said. "What they're going to do business-wise is what they're going to do. I have no control over that. But I'm confident in my ability to play third base." Manager Bob Geren knew Kouzmanoff was aware of the buzz surrounding his uncertain status in the winter. That's why Geren chatted with him before the A's took the field for their first full-squad workout Monday. "There wasn't much that needed to be said," Geren said. "I let him know he's a major league third baseman, and he's ours, and I'm happy he's here. He knows that teams look at other players." Kouzmanoff's 16 homers led the A's last season -- his first with the team -- and his 71 RBIs tied Kurt Suzuki for the team lead.
