Friday 23 Personal Statement I have delayed my return to Norfolk Island from my planned short family break due to an unexpected medical issue. Fortunately world class medical professionals and procedures available in the Australian Health System not only detected but successfully repaired a tear in my Aorta, the major artery. On December 30, the amazing skills of surgeons and support medical staff saved my life. Interestingly, the doctors and support staff at the hospital I attended, like other major hospitals, use high speed internet technology to also serve the medical needs of people in many remote parts of Australia. Being a levy based rate in 2014/15, the valuation of the land is not taken into account. The rate will instead be a series of levies that are collected to fund specific local government type functions. The levies will be utilised for the following areas within the Government’s budget:

Rates Levy Examples of local government % of rates Total rates for… services and facilities provided raised levies raised  Burnt Pine Beautification; Public Places and  Parks and gardens, 14% $35,000 Cemetery  Public amenities  Cemetery maintenance

Tourism Related  Marketing and promotion 70% $175,000  Town Planning  Environmental Health Environment,  Weed control 7% $17,500 Planning and Health  Reserve management and improvements  Collection management and Museums 9% $22,500 conservation 100% $250,000

In 2015/16 and beyond, it is anticipated that the rates will be calculated using a system of land values. Specifically this system will be based on the unimproved capital value (UCV) of the portion. In order to prepare for the valuation based rates, a Valuer General and Valuers are currently being appointed with the valuation process likely to commence in early 2015. This timeframe will give portion holders the opportunity to comment on the value of their portion, prior to valuation based rates notices then being issued around February 2016.

CALLING AN AMBULANCE

When confronted by a sudden accident or illness and you want help. The quickest way to get help: • Ring for the Ambulance, 22091 or 911 • Give the exact location, landmarks etc. • Speak slowly and clearly. • Give your name and the phone number you are ringing from. • Give the number of casualities [if a multi person accident] • Give the name of the patient if known [this is important on Norfolk as the hospital will have records of that person] • State if any other emergency service is required eg. Police, Cliff rescue etc. Telephone • Do NOT hang up till the hospital hangs up, they may have other questions 22091 or 911 they would like to ask. The Sincere Seeker.

Are you a seeker? What are you seeking for? Will 2015 be the year you find the answer? We are all on the journey of life. At some point, we all have thoughts and questions on the meaning for our existence, and questions on the existence of God. In the book of Jeremiah Ch.29:13 God says, ‘you will find Him when you search for Him with all your heart.’ In other words, you really do want to know if there is ‘God’; and if so, you desire to know Him.

Every day people all over the world are finding the reality of God and how much He loves them. They experience His life flowing out through them...the Bible calls it ‘the river of life, living water’. This has been my own experience. The change this brings about in our life’s journey enables us to represent His love and compassion for all people. John Adams found the reality of God in his life and was inspired to put the very words of Jesus Christ to music, which became the much loved Pitcairn Anthem.

(Matthew 25:34-36). Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, he blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you From the foundation of the world: For I was hungered, and he gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. In as much as ye have done it unto one, of the least of these my brethren, Ye have done it unto me.

This is the focus of a life that has found the reality of God. What a beautiful world it would be if everyone could live this way? We are living in a critical hour where we need to be found close to Gods heart, living by His power, moved with His compassion, and fulfilling all that He has purposed for our lives to be, in these days.

The Norfolk Island Wa’a Outrigger Club has been granted permission to set up the Norfolk Ocean Challenge outrigger canoe event site within Point Hunter Reserve at the eastern end of Emily Bay between 15 and 23 January.

The public will continue to have free pedestrian access to Point Hunter and the barbecue areas at the eastern end of Emily Bay. However, the road and car parking area between the eastern end of the pines at Emily Bay and Point Hunter (Lone Pine) will be closed to traffic.

In order to ensure safe and orderly access to the site, the NIWOC Committee is empowered to control vehicle access along the road at the eastern end of Emily Bay during that period.

Parking will be available on part of the grassed area between the road and the golf course.

All pedestrians and vehicle drivers are requested to heed the advice given by NIWOC officials and comply with reasonable directions and requests made by them with regard to access to the site and the parking of vehicles.

Everyone using Emily and Slaughter bays should take particular care: keep an eye out for canoe activities and heed advice from NIWOC beach officials. PETER DAVIDSON CONSERVATOR OF PUBLIC RESERVES
