BGOV BIOGRAPHY

By Timothy R. Homan, Bloomberg News Joyce Beatty says she was drawn to politics by her mentor, the late C.J. McLin, a prominent state lawmaker who founded what’s now known as the Legislative Black Caucus. McLin “took an interest in me and got me involved with the Democratic Party. From there it seemed like my life just soared,” Beatty said in a phone interview. Beatty defeated Republican Chris Long, a city council member in Reynoldsburg, to win her first congressional election. During the campaign, she focused on education, the economy, and Medicare and Social Security. She spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, where she talked about the role women play in the economy. Since taking public office, Beatty has focused many of her efforts on economic and financial matters, drawing on family experiences. “My mother’s side of the family were all small business owners,” Beatty said in an interview. “Our family had the first African-American gas station in Dayton, Ohio.” Her father was a brick mason and active in labor unions, she said. He also was a decorated member of the U.S. Army. Beatty’s own small-business experience includes starting a company that trained nonprofits to improve their services to at- risk community members. Later she opened a small retail shop in downtown Columbus. “As a small business owner, I understand what it’s like to make a payroll,” she said. “I’m very interested in financial services and how we can work together to have a win-win for those institutions that supply jobs.” Beatty said she recognizes her influence at first will be limited, and she’s willing to collaborate with other freshmen, even if they’re on the other side of the aisle. She mentioned Susan Brooks, a Republican from Indiana also elected in 2012, as someone she respects highly. Collaboration with Republicans may only go so far, though, since Beatty said she will work hard to protect Social Security and Medicare. Beatty, who suffered a stroke in 2000, said her understanding of medical issues was shaped by both personal and professional experiences. She has worked as a hospital administrator and a board member of the American Heart Association. She said she’s excited about commuting by foot from a place two blocks away behind the Supreme Court to her office in the House Cannon Office Building. “I’ll stay healthy and be on time,” she said. © 2015 Bloomberg Finance L.P.
