MARFAL S&T Media Service, DOST-STII THE DEPARTMENT of Science and Technology (DOST) has embarked on a partnership with Microsoft Philippines to conduct the 12th edition of Imagine Cup, an annual student competition of software applications addressing national problems in health, education, e-government, and others, as DOST’s Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) continues to support local talents in the industry. To be held in April 2014, Imagine Cup aims to encourage schools to institutionalize ICT-enabled innovation initiatives in their respective campuses in order to become hubs for ideas that will help solve real-life problems. In signing of Executive Order No. 128 last July 23, 2011, the President cited the need to create a body that will craft policies and programs to ensure that the fruits of information communications and technology, science and technology, trade and industry, transportation and communications will be fully developed and applied to all priority programs of the administration in the years 2012 to 2016. The newly created commission will be an advisory body to the President and will exercise the following functions and responsibilities: 1. Develop and recommend to the President the country's strategic vision and goals in the next century on how the country should prepare and adopt expected advances in science and technology for agriculture, budget and management, finance, health, labor and employment, public works and highways, transportation and communcations to advance the country‘s business and infrastructure sector and other priority areas; 2. Abstract: With the advent of using innovation surveys to provide a better understanding of evolving practices and factors that shape innovation system, the Department of Science and Technology has conducted a study involving the said survey to measure the current state of innovation in the Philippines. The pilot innovation survey covered key cities in the Philippines and focused on firms engaged in Electronics and Food Manufacturing and ICT-related industries. The key findings of the survey revealed that cost factors are the major barriers to innovation and knowledge management (KM) is a good determinant of innovation. It was found that firms active in KM practices have shown high innovation activity across size, industry type, and location of establishment.
