However, this amounts to only 240 per day in each direction – enough to fill five 50-seat coaches – illustrating the trivial use to which this invaluable right of way is put. A train's wheelbase is only 4ft 8.5in, however, the clear width between bridge abutments on a two-track line is 24 feet – the same as the carriageway width for a trunk road. Elsewhere the level width averages 28 feet. Headroom is everywhere adequate for container lorries. Hence if this invaluable right of way is to be put to sensible use, take the railway lines off and turn it into a road. Express coaches would then provide the same journey times as the trains at a quarter the cost. Those coaches would fill only a fraction of the space available, leaving lots to spare for lorries and other vehicles currently using unsuitable rural roads and city streets to the loss of all of us. Meanwhile taxpayers may like to know that national rail may cost every household in the land between 200 and 400 annually forever and that half of us use a train less than once a year. I understand that this is a highly offensive production which mocks God. Critics have described it as "foul-mouthed" (Observer) and "raucously filthy" (Sunday Times). I have never condoned foul language and find it offensive. Having it broadcast on TV is more offensive than having to listen to it in the street. It is my contention that by screening this programme the BBC will be in fundamental in breach of its Charter. The play brings together many of Jake's wonderfully eccentric cast of characters from his songs in this original show. The show premieres at Helmsley Arts Centre in May and will come to Leeds City Varieties on Thursday June 9 to Saturday June 11. Introduction When Pink Floyd’s original guitarist/songwriter Syd Barrett died in July 2006, the BBC News website featured a quote by British singer David Bowie, “He was the first guy I’d heard to sing pop or rock with a British accent – his impact on my thinking was enormous”. Indeed, as we shall see, the two 1967 singles “See Emily Play” and “Arnold Layne”, which represented the Pink Floyd’s entry into the musical mainstream, show un- mistakably just how British Barrett’s vocals sound. Bowie’s admiration for Barrett’s adoption of “a British accent” and the fact that this should be noteworthy can be explained in terms of a phe- nomenon that is typical for British popular music. 1 At the time relatively few singers of note used a British singing style consistently, the best known – and exceptional – exponents being former actor Anthony Newly, who focussed mainly on chanson- or music-hall-oriented material, and Jake Thackray, the “founding father of English chanson” (Clayson 2002). By contrast, ever since the Jazz era, but particularly from the 1950s onwards, British singers have modelled their singing style on what they perceived to be an American pronunciation, a tendency that continues to the present time.     Raymond Campbell School of Arts and Digital Industries University of East London Title: Comic Cultures: commerce, aesthetics and the politics of stand-up performance in the UK 1979 to 1992 Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. October 2016 Abstract This thesis represents the first Cultural Studies analysis of the 1980s entertainment form commonly known as ‘alternative comedy’, which emerged against the backdrop of social, industrial and political unrest. However, the use of the term ‘alternative comedy’ has obscured a diverse movement that contained many different strands and tendencies, which included punk poets, street performers, chansonniers and improvising double acts. This thesis goes some way to addressing the complex nature of this entertainment space by recognising the subtle but important differences between New Variety and alternative cabaret. Alternative cabaret was both a movement and an entertainment genre, while New Variety grew out of CAST’s theatre work and was constructed in opposition to Tony Allen’s and Alexei Sayle’s Alternative Cabaret performance collective. Taken together, alternative cabaret and New Variety comprise one part of the alternative space that also includes post-punk music, and were the cultural expressions of the 1980s countercultural milieu. Alternative cabaret and New Variety were the products of cultural change. Each genre has its roots in the countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s and it was the knowledge that agents had acquired through participation in these movements that helped to shape their political-aesthetic dispositions or their weltanschauunng. As well as political activism, rock music influenced performers and promoters and contributed much to their art.

It’s been a fantastic year here at Piccadilly Records, what with one thing or another, so here’s a look at the 2006 highlights: Obviously winning the Music Week award for best independent record store was a major coup, and a real reward for all the hard work everyone here puts into making the shop and website good places to buy music. Hopefully we manage to pass on our enthusiasm for the records and CDs we sell, without any of the elitism or snobbery often found in indie shops. On the back of the Music Week award we also ended up being one of the best record shops in the country (The Guardian) and best shops (not just record shops!) in the world (The Observer), while Tim and I were invited onto the airwaves GMR and Radio 4 respectively. The shop’s usual summer heat-wave coincided in part with the World Cup meaning we actually got to take a bit of time off to watch the England matches (oh, lucky us!). Looking back at my intro from our Summer booklet shows how wildly optimistic I was: I mean, England to get knocked out of the World Cup in the semis by Brazil - like that was going to happen! Hopefully we’ll do better in The Ashes (only a few days away as I write this!). On the staffing front Mark Ward added us to the long list of Manchester record shops he’s worked for then decided to head out to the sunnier climes of Australia to work for his dad instead, so good luck to him.
