Post by saintsray on Jun 21, 2011, 8:45am The following have been confirmed as discoveries by the BBC. The first three were found by Lance Meenach (LanceM), and the latter three, although known about in certain circles have had the dates confirmed and the Archive holders overseas names confirmed, thanks to Gordon Roxburgh at songs4europe.com. BBC Archiving are aware of these finds, and they are being followed up accordingly. All appear to be in broadcast quality:- the first three sit in the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library in the US. Donated from the personal collection of George Hamilton IV:- Videotape VT-20410/2 BBC Video, George Hamilton IV, PROG I; Spool Number 602; 17 October 1973. 1/2 inch video (Scotch 361) Videotape VT-20410/3 BBC Video, George Hamilton IV, 24 October 1973; recording number SHIB 87709; reel PROG 2. 1/2 inch video (Scotch 361) Videotape VT-20410/5 BBC Video, George Hamilton IV, 11/14/1973; spool Number 65, recording 87708; 14 November 1973. 1/2 inch video (Scotch 361)"" This was taken from lostshows.com for "George Hamilton IV and Other Folk"(BBC-TV,1973/1974): ""17.10.73 with Ralph McTell, The Rovers, Des Lane, Roy Warhurst (missing) 24.10.73 with Jake Thackray, Fivepenny Piece, Tommy & David Reilly (missing) 14.11.73 with Friday Brown, King's Singers, The Wurzels (missing)"" ....and the three Song for Europe clips, all existing in broadcast quality in the archives of German TV station ARD:- It's Cliff, 20.02.71 A Song for Europe - All Songs (missing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd9Um6BpiTs It's Cliff, 12.02.72 A Song for Europe - All Songs (missing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKeJ4yheQ3A Clunk Click, 23.02.74 A Song for Europe - All Songs (missing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pft181Kfs4U The Song for Europe clips were all on preview tapes sent by the BBC to particpating EBU broadcasters who were covering the Eurovision song contest. They have all been confirmed by songs4europe.com as being from the preview shows, not the contest proper. The finds have all been discussed on other threads, but have only 100% been confirmed as discoveries today. Thanks again to all those involved. Ray. Re: Six CONFIRMED finds! Post by funkyfarmer on Jun 21, 2011, 12:20pm The George Hamilton show from November 1973 would be a welcome recovery. It features the Wurzels with their original lead singer Adge Cutler. Adge Cutler died in a car crash in May 1974 before the Wurzels became famous with hits such as Combine Harvester. I imagine recordings of performances with him are quite rare Re: Six CONFIRMED finds! Post by saintsray on Jun 21, 2011, 1:17pm Slightly O/T....agreed Rich. By the way, I run the largest Wurzels Facebook Group (which I took over from Pete Seaton!) Re: Six CONFIRMED finds! Post by laurencepiper on Jun 22, 2011, 9:43am These are all notable finds, Ray. Well done to you and Lance for identifying them. I hope they find their way back to the archives. Presumably you've made them aware of the finds? Re: Six CONFIRMED finds! The other George Hamilton IV video tapes without specific programme title/rec/tx reference I am going to investigate further as they may or may not be missing shows. Also, slightly O/T, I am also getting a number of AR-TV shows checked out by our resident Rediffusion expert, Tim. At most one or two may be missing, as I think most are just productions directly for the overseas market. They are mainly docs and educational programmes so not on lostshows.com. Forgot to mention this yesterday! Re: Six CONFIRMED finds! Post by laurencepiper on Jun 22, 2011, 11:03am Do let us know about any Rediffusion finds, Ray. Anything recovered for that company is always a top priority for me! Re: Six CONFIRMED finds! Post by saintsray on Jun 22, 2011, 11:35am Will message you Laurence - don't get too excited, but give me five and my list will be over to you. Re: SEVEN CONFIRMED finds! Post by saintsray on Jun 22, 2011, 12:56pm In addition, I have now, after examining the catalogue further (the George Hamilton IV Collection), like to CONFIRM a SEVENTH missing bit of footage found:- Videotape VT-20410/4 BBC Video, George Hamilton IV, PROG I; Spool Number 602; 31 October 1973. 1/2 inch video (Scotch 361) ""Missing or incomplete episodes for programme GEORGE HAMILTON IV AND OTHER FOLK. Series 1 + 31.10.73 with The Hillsiders, Robin Hall & Jimmie MacGregor (missing)"" Re: Was 6, now SEVEN CONFIRMED finds! I imagine recordings of performances with him are quite rare Hi Richard. Back in 1989 when I was at Newport Film School, I found an old black and white film recording in our film cupboard. When I played it I was surprised to see a VT clock entitled 'The Scrumpy and Western Show'. It was a regional pilot for a never produced series featuring Adge Cutler and the Wurzels. The pilot was in fact networked (shown 02/11/1967) and then wiped. The recording I found was a direct positive FR, no negative ever existed. The quality was incredible and I returned the film to the BBC archive. I've since given them the original print permanently. Adge Cutler appears on the George Hamilton IV show from 30/05/1974 where he performs three tracks with The Wurzels, an episode of Up Sunday from 25/11/1973 where he performs two tracks, an episode of Up Sunday from 21/01/1973 where another two tracks are performed and he also appears on the Acker Bilk show from 28/06/1962. All of these programmes exist. There are one or two other performances which exist in the BBC Bristol archives. Paul Re: Was 6, now SEVEN CONFIRMED finds! Post by paulvanezis on Jun 22, 2011, 3:59pm BTW - I've just checked this. The 30/05/1974 George Hamilton IV show is an edited repeat of the 14/11/1973 show. It may be the same tape with sections physically removed, but it does still feature The Kings Singers, Friday Brown and the complete Wurzels performance. Additionally, the 17/10/1973 George Hamilton IV show which is missing does mostly survive in an edited repeat of 23/05/1974 but the 24/10/1973 show doesn't seem to be about.
