It may very well be the last as well, but as I used to say in my previous career “nothing is certain on the waterfront” and nothing is certain here as well. It has been just shy of 19 years and it doesn’t get easier. It is like the old adage “between a rock and a hard place” in that there have never been a better lot of artists than there are now: Dale Watson, Justin Trevino, Amber Digby, Ron Williams etc yet the major label music scene is, for a lack of a better word stuffed. Yet some people are impossible to convince. Some people refuse to take anything but the CMT route. It wouldn’t matter if I said Ron Williams’ is the best cd I have had this year and is right up there with the best ever of Mark Chesnutt, Keith Whitley and co. If you watch CMT and enjoy it then I will sell you a share in the Sydney Harbour Bridge. If you watch it and question its merit we have the answers for you.     Viewers will be seeing quite a bit of MCA's Mel Tillis on television in the near future. He has recently taped guest appearances on "Dinah" for CBS and "Hollywood Squares" at NBC. This month Tillis will tape "Laugh-ln"and a new comedy show, "Just For Laughs." This will mark the first television appearance for Tillis on an all-comedy show. And early in January he will act as a celebrity "gonger" on "The Gong Show." Taken from his latest album, "Love's Troubled Waters," Tillis' new single, "What Did I Promise Her Last Night," will be released this month. Elektra artist Eddie Babbitt has been touring out west the last few weeks. He has ap- peared in Arizona, and up and down the California coast. Rabbitt played Hollywood's Palomino Club two nights, and he also taped Harry Newman's Ar- med Forces Radio Show which is heard by over 500 million people worldwide. In addition to working on a new album here last week and a renewed concert schedule including numerous upcoming televi- sion appearances, Phonogram/Mercury's Jerry Lee Lewis will play COUNTRY EXCHANGE -A quartet of RCA Records artists recently appeared on the "Morning Exchange"television show, which originates in Cleveland, Ohio. a role in a new movie, "American Hot Wax." If you have any passion at all for bluegrass or old timey music then this will be (hands down) your album of the year. Loudon Wainwright is an artist I have long admired since I heard a song called “Samson and the Warden” (a wonderfully witty tale of a guy who doesn’t mind being in gaol so long as the warden doesn’t cut his hair) on an ABC radio show called “Room to Move” many years ago. A few years later he had his one and only “hit” with the novelty “Dead Skunk”. Now Loudon pundits will compare the instrumentation on this album with that on that song, and if a real pundit with that of his “The Swimming Song”. The backing is restrained. Banjo (Poole’s own instrument of choice), with guitar, some great mandolin (from Chris Thile) some fiddle (multi instrumentalist David Mansfield), some piano and harmonica and on a couple of tracks some horns. Now, Charlie Poole to the uninitiated was a major star in the very early days of country music. He is said to have pursued a musical career so he wouldn’t have to work and at the same time he could ensure his primary source of income, bootleg liquor, was properly distilled. He was no writer and adapted songs he had heard to his style.

    The History of Radio in Emanuel County Part I – WJAT Radio, 1950 thru 1975, Also the entertainment activities of the Nancy Auditorium By Rick Paul Swainsboro, Georgia has a rather unique radio history. From its humble beginnings, we were dazzled and entertained by events that only a short time earlier would have seemed unimaginable. The history of WJAT radio, while interesting enough, really cannot be told completely without including the entertainment activities of the Nancy Auditorium. What a thrill it must have been as citizens witnessed our sleepy little town transform from an obscure logging and farming hamlet into one of the five most significant country music venues in the country. Even more exciting, and maybe a little scary for some, when you consider that country music was still new and rock and roll unheard of. Truly amazing! I began collecting information for this piece in the 60s while hanging around the radio station as a typical teenager, fascinated by juicy stories being told about the radio station and its people. Later, after actually becoming an employee and hearing even spicier pieces of station lore, it dawned on me that someone should write this stuff down. Well, here we are all these years later, and alas, not much has been written about WJAT Radio or the events at the Nancy Auditorium. Recently, I felt the time had finally come to put down on paper some of the things I had learned over the years. And so I began, intent on covering all aspects of our radio/entertainment history. I wanted to really dig in, separate fact from fiction, inform the unaware, bring about a greater appreciation for a bygone era and maybe even learn some new facts along the way.
