It may very well be the last as well, but as I used to say in my previous career “nothing is certain on the waterfront” and nothing is certain here as well. It has been just shy of 19 years and it doesn’t get easier. It is like the old adage “between a rock and a hard place” in that there have never been a better lot of artists than there are now: Dale Watson, Justin Trevino, Amber Digby, Ron Williams etc yet the major label music scene is, for a lack of a better word stuffed. Yet some people are impossible to convince. Some people refuse to take anything but the CMT route. It wouldn’t matter if I said Ron Williams’ is the best cd I have had this year and is right up there with the best ever of Mark Chesnutt, Keith Whitley and co. If you watch CMT and enjoy it then I will sell you a share in the Sydney Harbour Bridge. If you watch it and question its merit we have the answers for you. Please read on. ----------------------------------- Ron Williams – “Texas Style” $32 If anything beats this as album of the year I will be very surprised.

If you have any passion at all for bluegrass or old timey music then this will be (hands down) your album of the year. Loudon Wainwright is an artist I have long admired since I heard a song called “Samson and the Warden” (a wonderfully witty tale of a guy who doesn’t mind being in gaol so long as the warden doesn’t cut his hair) on an ABC radio show called “Room to Move” many years ago. A few years later he had his one and only “hit” with the novelty “Dead Skunk”. Now Loudon pundits will compare the instrumentation on this album with that on that song, and if a real pundit with that of his “The Swimming Song”. The backing is restrained. Banjo (Poole’s own instrument of choice), with guitar, some great mandolin (from Chris Thile) some fiddle (multi instrumentalist David Mansfield), some piano and harmonica and on a couple of tracks some horns. Now, Charlie Poole to the uninitiated was a major star in the very early days of country music. He is said to have pursued a musical career so he wouldn’t have to work and at the same time he could ensure his primary source of income, bootleg liquor, was properly distilled. He was no writer and adapted songs he had heard to his style.

June 8, 2009 Issue 144 Strait Leads Country Charge King George headlined the biggest weekend in country music so far this year Saturday. With Rascal Flatts and Brad Paisley opening tours, Kenny Chesney commanding a stadium show, and dozens of stars playing for more than 120,000 fans at BamaJam, per-capita live country music exposure may have hit an all-time high. The weight of history, however, marked George Strait’s show at the grand opening of the state-of-the-art Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX (6/6). Early in her opening set, Lee Ann Womack (filling in for an ill Julianne Hough) sang, “I hope you never lose your sense of wonder.” And 60,188 in attendance seemed Cowboys Like Us: UMG/Nashville traveled in style to the Strait show. Pictured permanently awestruck -- as much by the building itself as by (l-r) are UMG’s Royce Risser, KSCS/Dallas’ Chris Huff and girlfriend Bridget Goodenbour, Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler, BPP’s Mara Sidweber, MCA’s Van the performance lineup, which also included Blake Shelton and Haze, Mercury’s Allen Mitchell and Damon Moberly, UMG’s Ken Robold, Reba. The $1.15 billion structure will hold 80,000 for football Tennessee Titans QB Kerry Collins and UMG’s Luke Lewis. and more than 100,000 when it hosts the 2011 Super Bowl. • August 2015 Newsletter
August 2015 Newsletter ------------------- Yesterday & Today Records PO Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Australia Phone: (02) 95311710 [email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ----------------------------------------------- Postage It takes a lot to understand Australia Post. Essentially there are 2 main things. If an item is under 20mm thick it goes as a large letter at a much cheaper rate to something over 20mm thick which is then classified as a parcel. This applies to both Australian and overseas Australia 1 cd $2 2cds $3 3/4/5 cds $8. The latter is up to 500grams and then individual areas are charged separately. If not in NSW it is usually cheaper to send anything over 500 grams in a prepaid satchel. It is $14 for a 3 cds satchel and you can get around 25 cds in one. That is in cases. Without cases you can get maybe 60-70 in a 3kg satchel. Overseas 1 cd or 2 cds is going to be $8 (cheaper for N.Z) and that is with cases. BUT 6 or so can go for $8 if you send without cases. Maximum weight is 250grams. Over 250 grams or thicker than 20mm it goes as a parcel BUT the good thing is the weight is 500 grams maximum. Box sets will be too probably too heavy. ---------------------------------------------------------- Extras/ lucky dip How about 50 cds for $50. They will be sent without cases in a 3kg satchel $14 or if in Sydney postal region $10. Good titles all as new and no dud labels. Can also add cds in at $1 each to make up to post maximum weight.
