It is because so many of you show up and go absolutely apeshit over these incredible young bands. Bands that play LOUDFEST can‘t wait to come back over here because they have heard for many years how useless it is to book shows in College Station. They had no idea about downtown Bryan. So many of the older people who came out to their first LOUDFEST last month 979Represent is a local magazine had no idea that any live local music goes on around here, let alone ANYTHING at all in downtown Bryan. for the discerning dirtbag. They assumed it was Northgate or nothing. So many bands have heard the horror stories from other bands about getting dicked over on money, parking and promotion by the few Northgate clubs that still book bands that they see Aggieland as a market to avoid. LOUDFEST is helping to change that attitude. Editorial bored LOUDFEST is booked every year out of a sense of brotherhood. We book bands we like and want to see.

Sean McCulloch – Lead Vocals Daniel Gailey – Guitar, Backing Vocals Bryce Kelly – Bass, Backing Vocals Lee Humarian – Drums Utter and complete reinvention isn’t the only way to destroy boundaries. Oftentimes, the most invigorating renewal in any particular community comes not from a generation’s desperate search for some sort of unrealized frontier, but from a reverence for the strength of its foundation. The steadfast metal fury of PHINEHAS is focused, deliberate, and unashamed. Across three albums and two EPs, the Southern California quartet has proven to be both herald of the genre’s future and keeper of its glorious past. The New Wave Of American Metal defined by the likes of As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall, Unearth, All That Remains, Bleeding Through, and likeminded bands on the Ozzfest stage and on the covers of heavy metal publications has found a new heir in PHINEHAS. Even as the NWOAM owed a sizeable debt to Europe’s At The Gates and In Flames and North America’s Integrity and Coalesce, PHINEHAS grab the torch from the generation just before them. The four men of mayhem find themselves increasingly celebrated by fans, critics, and contemporaries, due to their pulse-pounding brutality. Make no mistake: PHINEHAS is not a simple throwback. PHINEHAS is a distillation of everything that has made the genre great since bands first discovered the brilliant results of combining heavy metal’s technical skill with hardcore punk’s impassioned fury. SEAN MCCULLOCH has poured his heart out through his throat with decisive power, honest reflections on faith and doubt, and down-to-earth charm since 2007.

“Not Just Boys’ Fun?” The Gendered Experience of American Hardcore Siri C. Brockmeier MA Thesis in American Studies Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages ILOS UNIVERSITETET I OSLO May 2009 Advisor: Rebecca Scherr 2 Abstract The goal of this thesis is to shed light on a part of the story of American hardcore, a part that in my view has not been given the space it deserves. Women in punk and hardcore do not own a place in the history of their subcultural communities. Their contributions to their scenes are deemphasized, if not ignored. Drawing from subcultural theory and Joan W. Scott’s view on using experience as evidence, I use song lyrics, images and interviews to contextualize women’s experiences of American hardcore. In this, I attempt to understand how and why some women are drawn to such a closed masculine community, and how they navigate this environment. Women in the scene have been mentioned in works on hardcore, but their experiences and the role of gender in the scene has not been fully studied. Before women can be incorporated into subcultural history, they must be taken seriously as active participants in their environment. This thesis is an attempt at beginning such a discussion. 3 Acknowledgements This thesis is ultimately a cultural production of hardcore. Without the influence and inspiration hardcore has given me throughout the years, my path might have been very different. To my informants for honest input and enthusiasm about the project, to Gry Holmern Halvorsen for constant support I could not do without and insightful discussion that ultimately led to this project, to Pernille Birkeland for scholarly teamwork, to Peter Sehlin for introducing me to hardcore in our youth, to Andreas Øverland, Anette Pedersen, Jon A.

Atom and His Package Possibly the smallest band on the list, Atom & his Package consists of Adam Goren (Atom) and his package (a Yamaha music sequencer) make funny punk songs utilising many of of the package's hundreds of instruments about the metric system, the lead singer of Judas Priest and what Jewish people do on Christmas. Now moved on to other projects, Atom will remain the person who told the world Anarchy Means That I Litter, The Palestinians Are Not the Same Thing as the Rebel Alliance Jackass, and If You Own The Washington Redskins, You're a ****. Ghost Mice With only two members in this folk/punk band their voices and their music can be heard along with such pride. This band is one of the greatest to come out of the scene because of their abrasive acoustic style. The band consists of a male guitarist (I don't know his name) and Hannah who plays the violin. They are successful and very well should be because it's hard to 99 when you have such little to work with. This band is off Plan It X records and they put on a fantastic show. Not only is the band one of the leaders of the new genre called folk/punk but I'm sure there is going to be very big things to come from them and it will always be from the heart. Defiance, Ohio Defiance, Ohio are perhaps one of the most compassionate and energetic leaders of the "folk/punk" movement. Their clever lyrics accompanied by fast, melodic, acoustic guitars make them very enjoyable to listen to.

The subsequent spread of the original musical tropes and development of multiple trajectories of musical and stylistic innovation have resulted in a complex and multifaceted constellation of ideas, practices and objects that now constitute the hardcore music scene. Despite its growth, scholarly discourse in the field continues to operate almost exclusively in response to what has come to be called the ‘subcultures’ framework (Clarke et al 1976). The focus has been placed on the question of whether such forms can be conceptualised in terms of coherent and subversive ideologies, effectively setting the parameters of the debate in ways that have marginalised considerations of the musical experiences of participation, and which have limited sociological attempts to comprehend the significance of hardcore music as a social force.
