  • Piercings and Passports Exploring the Social Mobility of Adelaide’S Metalcore ‘Scene Kids’
Piercings and passports Exploring the social mobility of Adelaide’s metalcore ‘scene kids’ As young people continue to confront transition issues such as school-to-work pathways, they are concomitantly developing their own social and cultural priorities and responding to them in new and innovative ways. This process warrants a greater focus on young people’s identity work as they navigate their transitions through increasingly fluid social and cultural environments. Drawing on her current PhD research, Paula Rowe focuses attention on Adelaide’s ‘scene kids’, a community of interest based on a subgenre of heavy metal music. She utlises Bauman’s (2000) liquid modernity thesis to parallel the social dynamics of ‘liquid’ metal subgenres with those of the ‘liquid’ modern world. Exploring the social processes of scene kids highlights ways in which socioeconomic circumstances can affect young people’s level of engagement with lifestyle options. This in turn raises questions as to how “scene kid identities” might impact on other life pursuits and social transitions. by Paula Rowe outh transitions have dominated the youth research agenda for several decades, with a continuing focus on structural processes and institutional arrangements that Y shape and constrain young people’s holistic development, particularly in geographic locations characterised by conditions of social and economic disadvantage (Heath et al. 2009). More recently, there has been increasing interest in the ways in which young people’s identity work intersects and influences various social transitions within school, domestic and broader social contexts, and vice versa (Stokes & Wyn 2009). Despite the known social, economic and psychological constraints of marginalisation, young people still manage to find a space in which to express their identity and live a “life of one’s own”, yet not enough is known about the ways in which young people use cultural affiliations and lifestyle choices to express their identity and demonstrate personal agency in their social worlds (Miles 2000; Shildrick 2006).

This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. • Viking Interview: Q&A with Jamey Jasta by Daniel Offner When
Viking Interview: Q&A with Jamey Jasta By Daniel Offner When uttered, the name “Hatebreed” brings many things to mind, but what stands out most is the vocal talent of Jamey Jasta. Jasta, along with band mate Chris Beattie, founded the band in 1994 out of New Haven, Connecticut. Jasta is not only the lead singer of Hatebreed but has also gone off to do successful side projects with bands Icepick and Kingdom of Sorrow. He has also gone off to host MTV’s reincarnation of the 80’s hit program Headbanger’s Ball. This year Jamey will be touring with both Hatebreed (on the Jagermeister Music Tour) and Kingdom of Sorrow (at Ozzfest in Texas). The following is my Viking Interview with Jamey Jasta. Viking News: Where did the name Hatebreed come from? Jamey Jasta: “From the Misfits song ‘Hatebreeders’. We just took off the ‘e-r- s’.” VN: What inspired you guys to play music? JJ: “Well I think when me and (Chris) Beattie started the band we were already in other bands, and the other bands fizzled out. So to start this band and to play this music the inspiration was to do something bigger and better and more focused. But I think initially for both of us we were just drawn to music because of the community in itself.” VN: What type of bands influenced your style of music as a whole? JJ: “I would say bands like Slayer, Sepultura, Obituary, Entombed and more metal stuff like Carcass. On the hardcore side Agnostic Front, Killing Time, Sheer Terror, Integrity, Earth Crisis and bands like that.” VN: You mentioned Agnostic Front, which is playing the Dour Festival with you guys in Belgium.

  • Strapping Young Lad
THE DAYGLO’S AUSSIE TOUR #3 APRIL/MAY 2005 - ABSOLUTELY FREE PUNK, HARDCORE & METAL - THE SCUM ALSO RISES STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and shitloads more! ABSOLUTE EDITORIAL Absolute Editorial #3 Things are coming together nicely for us here at Absolute Underground. This is starting go be fun! We’re getting into a few free shows and people are starting to send in CD’s for us to review. We’ve got a lot of new people pitching in to make this rag better than ever. Emily Kendy joins us from Vancouver and brings with her a very impressive resume (The Nerve, Discorder, Terminal City, Exclaim...). We’ll be featuring a different Vancouver based band each issue starting with scum punks the Excessives. With the new Arena and Rod Stewart having played Victoria, you can just feel that this is going to be a great year for live music around town. I’m always impressed with the turnout and energy of the younger crowds at the all-ages shows. Even if you’re old you should go check one out sometime. You might find it invigorating to jump in a circle pit of mohawked fury. It was great hanging out with the crew at Spitfire Tattoo special thanks to Rick and Amanda. Electric Frankenstein was an amazing show and just proves that Victoria gets wicked shows all the time. A big middle finger to the asshole bouncers @ Diego’s who wouldn’t let me in even though I was on the guest list and then proceeded to tell the headlining act CHOKE to “pack their shit, they weren’t going to play.” This was after two huge idiots working the door beat up CHOKE’s drummer who weighs about a buck ten soaking wet.

  • Obstruktion Are the Latest Band to Declare Their Intentions to the World with Their Debut Album, 'Monarchs of Decay'
Obstruktion are the latest band to declare their intentions to the world with their debut album, 'Monarchs of Decay'. Based out of Gothenburg and featuring a number of Swedish hardcore veterans and luminaries, this band have drawn influence from the music of their formative youth and have finely honed this sound using their many years of experience and cumulative musical wealth. The result is an album of utmost severity and vigour that tears through social constructs to disclose the arrogance of the privileged. The band don't strive for a particular genre/sound and instead have made sure to create something unique and fresh while still paying homage to their predecessors. Appealing to fans of Hatebreed, Bitter End, Obituary, Harm's Way and Earth Crisis, their tightly knit sound transgresses the boundaries of musical trends. There is a strict no filler approach with songs such as Monarchs of Decay hitting hard from the get- go and delivering sublime guitar solos and dive bombs. Throughout the album, there is a masterly metal and hardcore aggression produced with a timelessly heavy execution. The vocals are delivered with the same mighty power as the subject matter is through the lyrical content. Driven by Hate starts with a haunting guitar line that builds to a punishing impact, showing maturity and excellence are both present in the craft of their songwriting. With soaring guitar harmonies and tight chugging guitars, Blackened Skies maintains a heavy groove that draws you in with a neck snapping ability. Other tracks feature pounding double kick, huge breakdowns and a relentless drive that keeps the pace moving with a satisfying tempo.

  • From Crass to Thrash, to Squeakers: the Suspicious Turn to Metal in UK Punk and Hardcore Post ‘85
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by De Montfort University Open Research Archive From Crass to Thrash, to Squeakers: The Suspicious Turn to Metal in UK Punk and Hardcore Post ‘85. Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge.
