Prof. Dr. Johanna Borek Eingang Cinecittà (Quelle:http://images.google.at/25.6.2009) 2 Ce l’ho fatta! „Arbeiten sind angenehm, wenn sie getan sind.“ (Cicero) Auch wenn die letzten Jahre für mich ziemlich turbulent waren, und um es theatralisch auszudrücken, Steine meinen Weg gepflastert haben. Nun habe ich es tatsächlich geschafft, nach sechs Jahren mein Studium mit dieser Diplomarbeit abzuschließen. Ich habe viele Bücher gelesen um zu erfahren, wie denn eine wissenschaftliche Abschlussarbeit geschrieben werden soll. Die Lösung ist einfach. Das Wichtigste ist, einfach damit anzufangen, denn das ist schon die Hälfte des Ganzen. Ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt ist, dass man an der Arbeit Spaß haben soll, wie Umberto Eco in seinem Buch1 schreibt, und das kann ich wirklich nur bestätigen. Wichtig sind aber auch die Menschen, die dich während deines Studiums begleiten und unterstützen. Ich möchte deshalb meine Diplomarbeit zwei ganz besonderen Menschen widmen, nämlich meinen Kindern, Alessa und Manfred, die mir während meiner gesamten Studienzeit Geduld und Verständnis entgegengebracht haben und mich in allen Belangen unterstützt haben, wo sie nur konnten. Vielen Dank! Ohne euch hätte ich es nicht geschafft. Und ich möchte an dieser Stelle meinen Eltern danken, die mein ganzes Leben lang in jeder Situation und Lebenslage hinter mir gestanden sind, wie zwei Felsen in der Brandung und mich immer, mit allen ihnen zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln, unterstützt haben. Danke! Auch ohne euch hätte ich es nicht geschafft. Und ich möchte Frau Professor Johanna Borek danken, die mir während meiner Studienzeit geduldig mit Rat und Tat zur Seite gestanden ist und mich immer wieder ermutigt hat, meine Diplomarbeit endlich zu vollenden.     The Scenographer presents Homage to Piero Tosi (costume designer) When I arrive at the Gino Carlo Sensani costume department accompanied by a student of the National School of Cinema, it does not in the least surprise me that Tosi receives me whilst keeping his back to me, intent on making some adjustment to a student’s problematic sketch. He pronounces a rapid greeting then lets pass a perfect lapse of time, neither too extended nor too brief, before turning to face me. Thoroughbred of the stage and screen, director of himself and in part an incorrigible actor, with an acknowledged debt to Norma Desmond and to those who still know how to descend a staircase with an outstretched arm on the banister, prompting those in attendance to take off their hat. I have known Pierino for many years, less in person, more through the words and the verbal accounts of Fellini, which almost never coincided with those of Tosi, yet traced a portrait with indelible colours. There is also a vague suggestion of witchcraft, from the moment in which the man ceased to change, neither from within nor from without. No sign of ageing, of the passing of time, preserved in a bubble of glass. Immutable, this is how Pierino Tosi appears to me, though he has no need of these compliments, neither does he fish for them, with always a foot placed on that shadowy line beyond which it is so easy to vanish, to fade away. Our mutual long-term acquaintance with Fellini draws us inevitably back to that climate.

The cinema of Giorgio Mangiamele Silvana Tuccio Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August, 2009 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Who is behind the camera? Abstract The cinema of independent film director Giorgio Mangiamele has remained in the shadows of Australian film history since the 1960s when he produced a remarkable body of films, including the feature film Clay, which was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 1965. This thesis explores the silence that surrounds Mangiamele’s films. His oeuvre is characterised by a specific poetic vision that worked to make tangible a social reality arising out of the impact with foreignness—a foreign society, a foreign country. This thesis analyses the concept of the foreigner as a dominant feature in the development of a cinematic language, and the extent to which the foreigner as outsider intersects with the cinematic process. Each of Giorgio Mangiamele’s films depicts a sharp and sensitive picture of the dislocated figure, the foreigner apprehending the oppressive and silencing forces that surround his being whilst dealing with a new environment; at the same time the urban landscape of inner suburban Melbourne and the natural Australian landscape are recreated in the films. As well as the international recognition given to Clay, Mangiamele’s short films The Spag and Ninety-Nine Percent won Australian Film Institute awards. Giorgio Mangiamele’s films are particularly noted for their style. This thesis explores the cinematic aesthetic, visual style and language of the films.

    Iwona Kolasińska William Wyler - pod znakiem kobiety Williama Wylera powszechnie uważa się za jednego z czołowych repre­ zentantów kinematografii, której nadano etykietkę „amerykańskiego kina klasycznego"1. Do amerykańskiego przemysłu filmowego trafił z Europy za pośrednictwem swego kuzyna, znanego producenta, założyciela wytwórni Universal Pictures, Carla Laemmle'a. Z pochodzenia Alzatczyk2, przybył do Hollywoodu w 1920 roku, gdzie pracował już jego starszy brat Robert i gdzie on również od 1925 roku zaczął kręcić filmy, z czasem ujawniając wielki ta­ lent reżyserski, którego nie zapowiadały jeszcze wczesne realizacje.     Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.
