    PATHWAYS TO ETHNIC CONFLICT* David Goetze Utah State University Abstract In recent years, the tidy framework of rational choice models and the untethered plasticity of culture models have come under challenge as approaches to explaining human social behaviors. Chief among scientifically-oriented competitors are biologic, evolutionary, and cognitive science approaches. This new work is helping to fill in the notorious “black box” that, in an earlier era, characterized human brain function. Reasoning in cognitive science and evolutionary theory is expanding our conceptual understanding of how the human brain really works and how it generates behaviors while a growing body of empirical work is enabling us to begin the testing of derived hypotheses. Even before the recent explosion of life science research, the modern synthesis of genetics and Darwinian natural selection solidified the underpinnings of evolutionary theory and paved the way for its use as a framework or paradigm for studying human social behaviors. This article asks what the evolutionary paradigm and life sciences can contribute to explaining one of the more important broad-scale behavior sets of the human species – those pertaining to warfare and, especially, to ethnic war, often cast as a primordial and seemingly ineradicable form of human conflict. The quick answer is that these modes of thought and research draw on evolutionary reasoning to formulate and constrain hypotheses about the causes and consequences of war; dispense with arbitrary and unduly limiting conceptions of human nature that stymied the search for genuine sources of warfare; and explore research areas, for example, human neurology and genetics, that were utterly untapped a few decades ago and are now offering a cornucopia of scientific evidence relevant to all types of human social behaviors.

    The Legacy of Transformational Moments in Feminist Psychology Stephanie A. Shields The Pennsylvania State University Important turning points in feminist psychology can sometimes be traced to particular moments—specific publications or situations in which an individual or group sparked advancement of the field. Some of these moments are acknowledged in our collective understanding of our history. For example, Naomi Weisstein’s (1968) "Kinder, Küche, Kirche as Scientific Law: Psychology Constructs the Female" often marks the beginning of contemporary feminist psychology (Rutherford, Vaughn-Blount, & Ball, 2010). Just as there are widely acknowledged milestones, such as the founding of Division 35, the Association for Women in Psychology, APA’s Committee on Women in Psychology, feminist psychological organizations in other countries, and many feminist journals in psychology, there are also local transformational moments deeply woven into the fabric of our history. These may be geographically specific, as in the history of a particular region or university, or they may be local events that we now realize were moments in a larger pattern that has shaped feminist psychology. The history of women in psychology has been a concern of feminist psychologists since the 1970s when a then-new generation of feminists realized that women were missing from the history of American psychology and worked to collect biographies and autobiographies to ensure that women’s place in the history of psychology would be there as a model for the women coming up in the ranks and never again be lost (e.g., Bernstein & Russo, 1974; Sexton, 1974; Scarborough & Furumoto, 1986, 1987; Russo & Denmark, 1987; Johnston & Johnson, 2008; Unger, 2010).

By offering a turnkey solution with the ability to tailor the already negotiated contract to match the entity’s specific needs and2 requirements,0162017 MHEC contracts shift some of the negotiating power back to the entities. Additionally, because of MHEC’s statutory status, many of these contracts can also be adopted for use by K-12 districts and schools, as well as cities, states and local governments. Smaller institutions benefit from these contracts as they allow these institutions to receive some pricing and terms normally reserved for larger institutions. Committee members participate in the negotiations, sharing strategies, and tactics on dealing with specific contractual issues and vendors. Each of these specialty areas has been strengthened over the years by research studies designed to prove or disprove theories and hypotheses that pique the interests of psychologists throughout the world. While each year thousands and thousands of studies are completed in the many specialty areas of psychology, there are a handful that, over the years, have had a lasting impact in the psychological community as a whole. Some of these were dutifully conducted, keeping within the confines of ethical and practical guidelines. Others pushed the boundaries of the field and created controversies that still linger to this day. And still others were not designed to be true psychological experiments, but ended up as beacons to the psychological community in proving or disproving theories. This is a list of the 25 most influential psychological experiments still being taught to psychology students of today. 1. A Class Divided Study Conducted By: Jane Elliott Study Conducted in 1968 in an Iowa classroom Experiment Details: Jane Elliott’s famous experiment was inspired by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the inspirational life that he led. The third grade teacher developed an exercise to help her Caucasian students understand the effects of racism and prejudice. Elliott divided her class into two separate groups: blue-eyed students and brown-eyed students. On the first day, she labeled the blue-eyed group as the superior group and from that point forward they had extra privileges, leaving the brown-eyed children to represent the minority group.
