It is believed that the informa- tion given is accurate as far as it goes, but fhould any further light be thrown hereafter upon the names of the artifts, it is trufted that thefe will be added by fome friendly hand, and that any errors obferved may be corre6led. Catherine . Carlo Maratti, (1625-1713.) T. CATHERINE of Alexandria, Nov. 25, a.d. 307, is the date given for her martyrdom. Patron Saint of Venice, philofophy, fcience, and education. This Saint is faid to have been a niece of Conftantine the Great, but her legend, even among the Greeks, cannot be traced further back than the eighth century. Her counfellors prayed -her to marry, but fhe could not be fatisfied with anything lefs than abfolute perfedlion, and the pidure of our Saviour being given to her. His image fo filled her imagination that her time was fpent in contemplation. She dreamed that fhe was prefented to the King of Glory, but that he turned from her. Full of grief, fhe alked a hermit how fhe could become worthy of the King, and he then taught her the Chriflian faith and baptized her. She then had another dream, that fhe was again prefented to the King of Glory, and was accepted by him, and was betrothed to him. On waking fhe found the ring on her finger, and from that time defpifed all things of this world. Later, after much perfecution, having refufed the Emperor Maximilian's offer of marriage, fhe was bound between four fpiked wheels, which turning in four different 4 DRAWING ROOM. diredions, fhould rend her in pieces. But fire fell from Heaven and confumed the wheels. St. Catherine was then beheaded, and angels carried her body to its grave on Mount Sinai. Square pifture, the figure of St. Catherine is three-quarters length. She is reprefented with auburn hair ; her face is feen in three-quarters to the right, her eyes look down on a book which refts on a portion of her diftindlive wheel, Handing perpendicularly on a table. Her drefs is fimple, of dull greenifh-brown. Her figure turns to the right. See 283, 342. 2. Isle of Capri : . Salvator Rofa, (16 14-1673.) In foreground there are peafants, with cattle, fheep, and goats. This pidure was brought from Redlynch. 4. A Sea-Piece . William Van de Velde. (1633- 1707.) A rough fea with three vefTels of different kinds. A man is reprefented in the foremoft trying to draw in fails. Small long fquare pifture. 5. Gypsies .... Wouvermans. (1620- 1668.) ^ypfy tent, with men and women and two children. A grey horfe, a brown horfe, and a foal lying down. Two goats in the foreground, and three crows are feen flying ; a conical hill in the diftance. Small upright square pidure. 6. Christ, St. John and Lamb P. P. Rubens, (157 7- 1640.) St. John, whofe arms encircle the lamb, is to the left ; he looks into the face Infant is _ , of the Chrift, whofe hand placed on / the head of the lamb, and who is feated on a red drapery which J lies on the bank. BRAWim ROOM, S A pidhire fomewhat fimilar, with St. Francis in the back ground, was in the pofTefTion of Sir Alexander Crichton, m.d., at St. Peterfburg in 1 8 9. 1 Misers 7. and Death ... 7. Lievens. (1607-1663.) if\v4 Two old men fitting at a table, counting pieces of money which fall out of a leathern bag. The figure of Death appears in the background between them. Small fquare pifture. J. Lievens was born at Leyden, 1607, came to England in the reign of Charles I., and died at Antwerp, 1663. 8. A Lady in a White Satin Dress G. Terburg. (1608-1681.) ^c^sc^ A woman feated on a crimfon chair with her back to the ''iJUht^4cL /'Ms, fpeftator. She has dark red brown hair. White jacket laced 'j. v.^ up the back with a red cord. Her right hand is extended on a , y> <>-|^/^ ^ table on which are a book and a bead necklace. Another woman (rvJV tv4'' Jtrr^ i0^r-0y,-^ in the background flands, her figure turned to the left ; fhe looks at the lady who is fitting. In her hand fhe carries a falver and ' R,, filver cup. Small upright fquare pidlure. This pidlure was given to Henry Stephen, Earl of Ilchefter, by his coufin the Rev. Charles Digby, fon of Hon. Stephen and Lady Lucy Digby. Terburg painted white fatin fo inimitably, that he generally introduced it in his pidlures. 9. Siege of Naarden . J Van Wyck, (1640- 1702.) The little city of Naarden on the coaft of the Zuyder .It^. - Zee, twelve miles from Amfterdam, was taken by the French in 1672, and retaken by the Prince of Orange the following year, 1673. A church on the height in the background ; tents, troops, and people to the left. On the right mounted foldiers in red uniforms, riding away from the fpedator. In centre there is a figure on horfeback apparently furrounded by ftaff. Long fquare pidlure. This pidure is mentioned in Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford's, Works, vol. iii., p. 380, quarto edition, 1798. 6 -DRAWING ROOM. ]sJote : — Lord Ilchefter has the Siege of Naarden by Van Wyck with King William, when Prince of Orange, com- manding." This pidure was brought from Redlynch. II. Italian View . Gavin Hamilton, (d. 1797.) Stone pines to left. Short pier running into the fea with ^ U-^ lighthoufe. (d. 1681.) Trees to the left. In the centre on raifed ground are waggons. Numbers of mounted men are Ikirmifliing in the background, and in the foreground others are fighting. Long fquare pidure. Figure of a man Handing on rocky ground in the centre of pidlure, which is a long fquare in form. 14. Interior of a Church . Peter Neefs. (1570-1651.) Three chapels feen through pointed arches. In the centre one a large brafs chandelier with candles. Figures of men and women kneeling in nave of the church. Long fquare pidure. 15. View in Venice . Antonio Canaletti. (1697-1768.) Curioufly fliaped rock in background to right. 18. Dutch Guard-House . .A Palamedes, A ftone archway at the back. In foreground two cavaliers, with conical hats, point to a dog and hat lying on the ground. Other figures to right and left. This pidure was brought from Redlynch. There were two painters of the name of Palamedes,—Paul died in 1638, and Anthony in 1680. Their real name was Stevers or Staevarts. Anthony was the elder of thefe brothers, but Paul was the greater artift. 19. View in Venice . Antonio Canaletti, (1697-1768.) View on the Grand Canal. 20. View near Naples . ' . G. On the other hand, the Police Burghs very frequently assume a charge of which A 079 2 Aberchirder. examples, in the blazonry of the Royal and Parliamentary Burghs, are very rare : this is the cross, derived apparently from the fact that their market-crosses are the most prominent of their ancient monuments. In cases where the cross calvary does not appear, a cross of some other kind is often found, as in the present instance.

Also included in the collection are letters, not involving Mundella, of the family of Robert Leader, acquired by Mundella’s daughter Maria Theresa who intended to write a biography of her father, and transcriptions by Maria Theresa of correspondence between Mundella and Robert Leader, John Daniel Leader and another Sheffield Liberal M.P., Henry Joseph Wilson. The collection does not include any of the business archives of Hine and Mundella. Anthony John Mundella (1825-1897) was born in Leicester of an Italian father and an English mother. After education at a National School he entered the hosiery trade, ultimately becoming a partner in the firm of Hine and Mundella of Nottingham. He became active in the political life of Nottingham, and after giving a series of public lectures in Sheffield was invited to contest the seat in the General Election of 1868. Mundella was Liberal M.P. for Sheffield from 1868 to 1885, and for the Brightside division of the Borough from November 1885 to his death in 1897.

    Henry Fox’s Drafts of Lord Hardwicke’s Speech in the Lords’ Debate on the Bill on Clandestine Marriages, 6 June 1753: A Striving for Accuracy Clyve Jones Before Hansard began publication in the early nineteenth century, the first regular and sustained reports of debates in Parliament were inaugurated in 1711 by Abel Boyer in his monthly Political State of Great Britain. In the middle of the eighteenth century the reporting of debates was forbidden by resolutions of both Houses, and such printed debates that have survived were usually written by reporters who had not heard them. Later on after 1774, when the prohibition of strangers was relaxed, there was an unprecedented printing of debates and various series of compilations were published. Before Boyer, however, the only records of debates in either the Commons or the Lords were personal ones taken by members or visitors to Parliament.1 And even after the first printing of debates by Boyer, many people, particularly those in the political elite, continued to obtain their Parliamentary information from personal accounts. These took various forms: notes taken in the Houses (sometimes written up afterwards into a more polished account, often in the form of a journal or diary, in which speeches appear to be written out in full),2 letters or parts of letters, separates (i.e., single or multiple sheets, often differing little from notes taken in the Parliament, and often concentrating on specific issues), and speeches (sometimes published, or circulated in manuscript). Often these reports consisted of lists of speakers followed by a summary of the arguments used, and occasionally they might include, in part, verbatim accounts of debates (or, at least, what look like verbatim accounts of speeches); even rarer were reports which were (or looked like) full verbatim accounts of a debate.
