west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has. -

Pittsburgh Boomers | August 2005 James Taylor: Making Music and Memories By John Fries If you went to high school during the 1970's, as I did, you'll recall a lot of really great music -- on the radio, in the school cafeteria at lunchtime, and on the eight track tapes you punched into your car dashboards at night while driving around. While the musical landscape offered something for everyone, much of it seemed to fall into two distinct categories: straight-ahead rock and top 40 pop. Here in Pittsburgh, we were either tuned to Trevor Ley playing Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd on 'DVE or listening to the "New Sound of 13Q," which played a wide and eclectic mix of whatever was in the top 40 at the time. The top hits of the day were listed each week in the pocket-sized "hit parades" KQV and 13Q published and provided for free in local record stores. The list could include any combination of rock, power pop, country, rhythm and blues, vocalists, the occasional novelty record, and that 70's radio staple known as the singer-songwriter. Remember them? The mellow music makers who played guitar or piano, wrote meaningful, introspective lyrics, and served up gentle melodies? The singer-songwriter sections of our 45 collections included titles by such artists as Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, John Denver, Paul Simon and a West Coast band of country rock upstarts called the Eagles. Although they were - and are -- all great artists, James Taylor became the undisputed king of the genre. -
The Aesthetics of Hate Music
The Aesthetics of �Hate Music� By Keith Kahn-Harris Introduction The expression of hatred in music is, for many people, something intrinsically worrisome. From Nazi skinhead music to homophobic reggae, hate music seems to demand close watching at least and direct censorship at most. This is perfectly understandable given contemporary concerns about �hate speech� and in many ways the desire not to let hate-filled music pass without comment is a laudable one. However, I want to argue that the terms of the debate about hate and music are all too frequently rooted in certain, very questionable, ideas about musical aesthetics and that as a consequence some of the complexities surrounding issues regarding hatred and music tend to be ignored. In particular I wish to question the tacit assumption behind much writing on music and hate that it is a prioria problem. That is, that hatred and music simply do not go together and when they do come together the consequences can only be worrying. In fact, this assumption is historically specific and open to question and contestation, with important consequences for our understanding of music and hate The legitimacy of hatred In western societies at least, the development in the nineteenth century of a particular musical aesthetic has had far-reaching consequences (Chanan 1994). That is, the resurrection of the Platonic idea that music should ideally represent a form of transcendental perfection. In an impure world of lust, conflict and hatred, music should ideally represent the world as it ought to be, a world that is whole, perfect, free of messy bodily imperfections and antagonism. -

DOLEMITE IS MY NAME Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski FINAL IN THE BLACK We hear Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" playing softly. VOICE I ain't lying. People love me. INT. DOLPHIN'S - DAY CU of a beat-up record from the 1950s. On the paper cover is a VERY YOUNG Rudy, in a tuxedo. It says "Rudy Moore - BUGGY RIDE" RUDY You play this, folks gonna start hoppin' and squirmin', just like back in the day. A hand lifts the record up to the face of RUDY RAY MOORE, late '40s, black, sweet, determined. RUDY When I sang this on stage, I swear to God, people fainted! Ambulance man was picking them off the floor! When I had a gig, the promoter would warn the hospital: "Rudy's on tonight -- you're gonna be carrying bodies out of the motherfucking club!" We see that we are in a RADIO BOOTH. A sign blinks "On The Air." The DJ, ROJ, frowns at the record. ROJ "Buggy Ride"? RUDY Wasn't no small-time shit. ROJ GodDAMN, Rudy! That record's 1000 years old! I've got Marvin Gaye singin' "Let's Get It On"! I can't be playin' no "Buggy Ride." (beat) Look, I have 60 seconds. I have to cue the next tune. Hm! Rudy bites his lip and walks away. Roj tries to go back to his job. He reaches for a Sly Stone single -- when Rudy suddenly bounds back up. RUDY How about "Step It Up and Go"? That's a real catchy rhythm-and-blues number. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission October 23, 1979, Designation List 129 LP-1026 NEW AMSTERDAM THEATER, 214 West 42nd Street, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1902-03; architects Herts & Tallant. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1013, Lot 39. On January 9, 1979, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the New Amsterdam Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 4). The hearing was continued to March 13, 1979 (Item No. 3). Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. A total of 16 witnesses spoke in favor of designation at the two hearings. There were two speakers in opposition to designation. Several letters and statements supporting designation have been received. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The New Amsterdam Theater, built in 1902-03 for the theatrical producers Klaw & Erlanger, was for many years one of the most pres tigious Time Square theaters and horne of the famous Ziegfeld Follies. Designed by the noted theater architects, Herts & Tallant, the New Amsterdam Theater achieved distinction both for its functions and for its artistic program. More than just a theater, the structure was planned, at the request of Klaw & Erlanger, to incorporate two performing spaces with an office tower to house their varied theatrical interests. Even more importantly, however, the New Amsterdam is a rare example of Art Nouveau architecture in New York City, and, as such, is a major artistic statement by Herts & Tallant. Working in conjunction with sculptors, painters, and other craftsmen, they used the Art Nouveau style to carry out a dual theme--the representation of the spirit of drama and the theater and the representation of New Amsterdam in its historical sense as the city of New York.
