COMMUNITY PROMOTION

Community Promotion provides funds for agencies and programs which promote awareness and use of Santa Cruz for business and tourist activities.

Activities 1035 Santa Cruz Convention and Visitor Promotion Provides a portion of the transient occupancy tax receipts for promoting city conventions and the tourism industry.

1050 Downtown Business Promotion Assessment The City collects the downtown business promotion assessment and allocates the funds to appropriate downtown agencies which carry out promotional activities in the downtown area.

1075 Cultural Council Of Santa Cruz County This program includes Spectra, an arts in education program which operates in all forty K-8 schools, grant awards to cultural organizations, and management assistance/marketing for cultural facilities development.

SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAMS Activities 1702 Above the Line/Group Home Society Provides for a comprehensive system of services for homeless youth such as outreach, intake and shelter, assessment and transitional services to permanent housing.

1747 Big Brothers/Big Sisters Provides prevention-based services to single-parent families throughout the county by coordinating and supervising one-to-one mentoring relationships between volunteers and children ages 7 to 14.

1746 Cabrillo College Stroke Center The center offers classes for physically disabled adults who wish to learn skills and techniques for independent living.

1701 California Grey Bears The California Grey Bears, through Operation Brown Bag, distributes fresh produce, gleaned from farms in the tri-county area, to seniors 55 and older to augment their nutritional requirements and to help them live independently longer.

1745 California Rural Legal Assistance Provides housing counseling and representation in housing matters to low-income persons in the city of Santa Cruz. (Formerly Legal Aid of the Central Coast.)

1709 Campus Kids Connection Provides educational, affordable after school child care.

1744 Central Coast Center for Independent Living A consumer-run advocacy, resource and referral agency advocating full integration of persons with disabilities into the community.

1704 Community Action Board/Immigration Project Provides a variety of direct immigration related services by providing information and referral services.

1738 Community Action Board/Shelter Project The Shelter Project directs the Housing for Medical Emergency Program, Emergency Rent Assistance to avoid eviction, the Shelter Hot-Line, Video Resumes, and the Message Center. The Shelter Project coordinates resources, documents needs and seeks additional funding to house homeless residents.

1705 Community Bridges/Childcare The Intergenerational Childcare Center, La Fonda Children’s Center, and Good Beginnings Childcare Center provide subsidized child care services on a sliding scale to preschool-aged children whose parents are income eligible, homeless, working, looking for work, or are enrolled in a training program.

1767 Community Bridges/Family Health Education Center Provides basic parent education classes and support to low-income, disadvantaged, or at-risk parents and their children.

1708 Community Bridges/Meals on Wheels Provides well-balanced, nutritious meals to seniors in the County of Santa Cruz.

1717 Community Children’s Center Provides weekly childcare services for children between the ages of 2 and 5 years.

1720 Conflict Resolution Center Offers low-cost mediation services to individuals and organizations. Conducts workshops on conflict resolution and mediation skills for the public and for organizations.

1762 Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) CASA provides emotional support and advocacy services to abused and neglected children involved in the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Court and provides a way for qualified committed volunteers to enhance this county’s ability to serve. In-depth information is provided to the Court to expedite safe and permanent homes for children. CASA intervenes in children’s lives to deter future delinquency.

1760 Dientes Community Dental Clinic Provides preventive, emergency, educational and general treatment dental services for low-income residents of Santa Cruz County.

1761 Doran Center for the Blind Provides individualized instruction, support and appropriate resources allowing visually impaired clients to remain in home environment.

1729 Emeline Child Care Center Emeline Child Care Center is a full day, full year program serving children aged 2-5. Maintaining a 1:6 teacher to child ratio, this age appropriate program provides an enriching environment in which children can develop social, physical and cognitive skills and abilities.

1741 Familia Center Familia Center is a Latino-based community agency offering assistance to families and children to meet their basic human needs through food pantry and clothing services, crisis intervention, information, referral and follow-up, and enrichment activities. Services are bilingual, in Spanish and English.

1763 Families In Transition (FIT) FIT serves homeless families with children in north and mid-Santa Cruz county by providing transitional and permanent housing assistance, employment training and educational opportunities, comprehensive case management and supportive services.

1711 Family Service Agency of the Central Coast/Counseling Services Provides psychotherapy services to low-income clients, who are treated for issues that include child abuse, substance abuse, AIDS/ARC, homelessness, depression, and family conflict.

SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAMS Activities (continued) 1764 Family Service Agency of the Central Coast/I-You Venture I-You Venture provides friendly visitation by trained volunteers to local care facility residents, outreach, information and referral about aging and residential care.

1752 Family Service Agency of the Central Coast/Senior Outreach Outreach counseling program that provides individual, family and group counseling in the home or community to elders, their families, and other clients dealing with issues relating to aging.

1758 Family Service Agency of the Central Coast/Suicide Prevention Provides crisis line services, community education, information, referral and outreach through trained volunteers.

1770 Grandma Sue’s Community Project Grandma Sue’s provides in-home services to disabled adults and children: counseling, food, clothes, agency referrals, back-to-school supplies, tutoring, special dietary foods, children’s activities, recycling and crisis support.

1771 Growing Cycles Environmental Council Growing Cycles provides opportunities for youth to fix their own bikes, to learn more advanced repair skills, and to work to teach others repair and ride safety.

1728 Homeless Services Center/Homeless Community Resource Center Provides morning and evening meals to approximately 200 homeless and low-income persons daily. Most paid positions are staffed by homeless persons, and meal recipients perform serving and cleanup. Meals are served at 8 am and 4 pm. Showers, laundry, lockers, and information/referral services are available on site. (Formerly, Homeless Community Resource Center was corporation name.)

1733 Homeless Garden Project The Homeless Garden Project provides regular work within a rehabilitative environment, teaching sustainable agricultural practices along with basic job and interpersonal skills, and client/worker referral and support services.

1721 Homeless Services Center/Interfaith Satellite Shelter Program Provides shelter services to the area’s homeless population 365 days/yr. (Formerly Citizen’s Committee for the Homeless/Interfaith Satellite Shelter Program.)

1703 Homeless Services Center/Page Smith Community House Community House transitional shelter program will provide services to assist persons who want to make the move out of homelessness. (Formerly Citizen’s Committee for the Homeless/Page Smith Community House.)

1772 Kids and Teens Exploring Nature Kids and Teens provides free educational and recreational programs to low-income and at-risk youth. The programs are designed to be fun and provide physical, emotional and intellectual challenges, while developing strong personal, community and environmental values.

1725 New Life Community Services New Life Community Services provides emergency sheltering facilities which offer forty-one beds, clothing, food, medical attention, substance abuse counseling, re-entry education, and case management to homeless people.

1735 Ombudsman/Advocate, Inc. This program is responsible for investigating and resolving complaints from or on behalf of residents of nursing homes, board and care homes, and mental health institutions.

1722 Parents Center The Parents Center, Inc. is undertaking this program which is designed to treat the victims of child by providing individual, couple, family and group counseling to sexually abused children and their families.

1766 Planned Parenthood Mar Monte/Westside Health Center Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center provides general health care, pediatrics, prenatal, contraceptive care, sexually transmitted disease diagnosis and treatment.

1754 Santa Cruz AIDS Project Provides recruitment, training, and coordination of volunteers to give care and emotional support to persons with AIDS and AIDS-related conditions.

1765 Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos The primary purpose of Barrios Unidos is to bring peace to the barrios through outreach/organizing, leadership development, job-readiness programs, positive and constructive programs of community education, academic and technical training, and collaboration with other community organizations for the express purpose of redirecting the energy currently being expended in violence, particularly gang related violence.

1712 Santa Cruz Boys and Girls Club/Smart Moves SMART Moves is a comprehensive drug, alcohol, and teen prevention program encompassing instruction and skill-building activities, parent involvement, and community support.

1768 Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center - Gang Intervention Provides outreach, assessment, individual, group and family counseling to youth who are high risk for gang involvement and behavior.

1732 Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center - River Street Shelter Thirty-two bed overnight facility providing basic survival needs and recovery support to mentally ill and chemically dependent, homeless, adult men and women.

SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAMS Activities (continued) 1719 Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center - Youth Services Sponsored by the Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center, Inc., this project is designed to divert youth from the juvenile justice system and provide counseling, educational, economic and recreational activities to them and their families.

1748 Santa Cruz County Office of Education/Child Development Resource Center Provides staff development and training opportunities to promote quality in the 398 licensed Family Child Care homes and 99 center-based programs in Santa Cruz County. Operates the Child Care Switchboard providing free bilingual childcare referrals and providing childcare information to parents.

1723 Santa Cruz Toddler Care Center The Center provides full- and part-time child care for families with children aged 12-months to 30-months. The Center is open five days weekly and serves families who are working or receiving training.

1730 Santa Cruz Women’s Health Center Provides bilingual and culturally appropriate primary medical and health education services for women and children. Provides information and referral, does community education and outreach.

1759 Second Harvest Food Bank Serving Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties Provides long-range and short-range program goals to eliminate hunger, malnutrition and poverty in Santa Cruz County.

1731 Senior Citizen’s Legal Service Provides legal services without charge to elderly residents of Santa Cruz County.

1742 Senior Network Services Senior Network Services is a community resource agency providing support services for older adults. Programs making up this multi-purpose agency are Information and Assistance, Shared Housing, Senior Employment, Respite Care Registry, Money Management, and Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP).

1737 Seniors Council Area Agency on Aging The Area Agency on Aging assesses the needs of seniors, administers federal and state funds for an array of services, coordinates and advocates to address unmet needs, fills gaps and eliminates barriers to service, and plays a leadership role in building a community-based system of long-term care.

1753 Seniors Council-Project Scout Serves seniors and disabled persons through several programs, including income tax assistance, homeowner/renter assistance, senior flu shots and counseling.

1713 Survivors Healing Center Survivors Healing Center provides a variety of services for survivors of child sexual abuse and their supporters.

SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAMS Activities (continued) 1739 Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County Operates 16 direct-service programs in the tri-county area: Adopt-A-Grandparent, CitySERVE, Community Connection, Disaster Response, Friends Outside, Friendly Visiting, Literacy Program, Graffiti Removal Project, Human Race Walkathon, Holiday Project, Mental Health Resource Center, Volunteer Referral, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Transportation Program, Volunteer Initiative Program (VIP), and YouthSERVE.

1714 Volunteer Centers - YouthSERVE The YouthSERVE Program is an integrated after school program to help teens take an active role in their communities, develop life and employment skills, and build their capacity for leadership.

1716 Walnut Avenue Women’s Center/Family Support Services The Family Support Services program provides multiple services to women, children and families to help them realize the opportunities and skills they need to thrive. Services include domestic violence-related legal services, safe homes for battered women and children, court and social service advocates, support groups for women, children, and teen girls and boys.

1734 Walnut Avenue Women’s Center/PAT Integrated Childcare Services The Walnut Avenue Women’s Center operates two childcare centers for children ages 2 to 6 years at its Downtown Children’s Center (DCC) and infant care for newborns through 30 months at its Teenage Mother’s Infant/Toddler Center (TAM) located at Santa Cruz High School, and also provides child care to the general community.

1715 Welfare and Low Income Support Network The Peer Support Advocacy Project provides a wide variety of outreach and direct services to low-income families through a support network to diminish and prevent the effects of poverty.

1726 WomenCARE WomenCARE provides free assistance to women dealing with cancer through support groups, a lending library, Internet access, a lecture series, individual consultation, special classes, and healthcare resources.

1724 Women’s Crisis Support/Defensa de Mujeres Shelters Women’s Crisis Support/Defensa de Mujeres provides services to Santa Cruz County women dealing with domestic violence and , and to women addressing their addiction to drugs and alcohol.

1790 Social Services Monitoring Program Grant monitoring services performed by the County of Santa Cruz Human Resources Agency for those programs that receive Social Services Program grants through the City of Santa Cruz, and not the County of Santa Cruz. The in-depth monitoring includes site visits, an administrative review, a programmatic review, and program development. All other programs which receive City, as well as County grants are monitored on an ongoing basis by County staff at no charge to the City.
