FRI PERICO SAMBEATwith Phil Ware Trio The alto saxophonist PERICO SAMBEAT is regarded as one of the great Spanish 25th jazz musicians. He has earned a huge reputation for his extraordinary career both inside and outside of Spain. Over twenty albums as a leader and more than a hundred as a sideman have highlighted his work with greats like Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwin- kel, Tete Montoliu, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny and many others. Over 20 years of professional experience has earned him an international reputation. With a strong classi- cal base, he began his studies of modern music in the Taller de Musics in Barcelona, where he had teach- ers like Zé Eduardo. In 1991 he moved to New York where he joined the New School. There he played with masters such as Lee Konitz, Jimmy Cobb and Joe Chambers. His prolific career has led to participation in festivals and programmes world- wide, and to recording albums including Uptown Dance with Mike Mossman and David Kikoski (released on EGT); Passages with Gerardo Nuñez (Resistencia);

DOLANS UPSTAIRS Friendship with Brad Meldhau, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Jeff Ballard (ACT); Fla- menco Big Band with Miguel Poveda, Javier Colina and others (Universal-Verve); Dance Guaná, CMS Trio’s third album with Javier Colina and Marc Miralta; Ballads with his quartet (Borja Barrueta, Bernardo Sassetti and again Colina); and Elastic, 10.30pm | €15 a quintet with Jeff Ballard, Eric Legnini, Andre Fernandes and Thomas Bramerie. These last three albums were released by ContraBaix / Karonte. Phil Ware Trio FRI Featuring Perico Sambeat 25th Phil Ware/piano Dave Redmond/ double Bass Kevin Brady/ drums “An impressive demonstration of the straight-ahead bop piano lineage.” The Irish Times

As jazz settles into its second century, the rude DOLANS UPSTAIRS health of the piano trio worldwide belies the notion that the creative seam of acoustic piano, bass and drums has been mined to exhaustion, and Ire- land has its own high achievers. Described by The Irish Times as a textbook example of the ongoing vitality of the tradition, PHIL WARE’s trio has set a new benchmark for the piano trio here. Born in England but a Dubliner since 2000, Ware’s contribution to the Irish jazz resurgence has been generous to a fault, his tasteful and always supportive playing a leitmotif of many leading groups. As with so many pianists, he has a special affinity for singers, but his pen- chant for melody is best appreciated when he performs with stalwarts bass- ist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady and their hallmark deep groove. First among these equals is Ware, swinging hard with the instrument’s full potential, from its gentle intimacy to its orchestral sweep, captured beneath his hands. Stride for stride, a piano trio from Ireland worthy of the genre’s illustrious history. 10.30pm www.improvisedmusic.ie MAIN EVENT MAIN EVENT SAT THE JOST PROJECT SEPTET The music of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, 26th Aerosmith, Donovan, Simon and Garfunkel, the Beach Boys, and others… PAUL JOST is an eclectic artist who is a singer, musician, arranger and com- poser. Originally a drummer, over the years his musical talents extended to guitar and harmonica, but it’s his voice that truly makes him a stan- dout. His vocals are so soulful that music critic Buster Maxwell wrote... “he nearly single-handedly reclaims the male voice as a valid and critically important jazz instrument.” Paul has been performing worldwide in recent years and is proud to have a regular date at the famed Jazz Club in New York, 55 Bar. He was recently commissioned to re-imagine Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” album as jazz and he headlined at the Exit 0 Jazz Festival presenting this music to cheers in the crowds. Reaching new audiences for jazz is the goal of The Jost Project, the band launched by vibraphonist Tony Miceli and bassist Kevin MacConnell, in which Paul is vocalist and

SAVOY HOTELSAVOY arranger. Their CD, ‘Can’t Find My Way Home’ (Dot Time Records), has received very positive reviews. CHARLOTTE SUITE In Jazz in Europe, a critic wrote... “The Jost Project is without a doubt one of the most creative bands I have heard for years and vocalist 8pm | €20 Paul Jost one of the best male jazz vocalists since Mark Murphy.” ...Vibraphonist TONY MICELI, whose playing has been THE JOST compared with the legendary Milt Jackson and Gary Bur- SAT ton, grew up in New Jersey, currently resides in Philadel- PROJECT phia, and has been steadily working the jazz scene since 26th 1980. As a group leader, sideman, and recording artist, SEPTET he has performed with numerous top musicians includ- ing David Liebman, Jimmy Bruno, Ken Peplowski, John Swana, Larry McKenna, and many others. “Miceli’s vibes playing is nothing short of phenomenal, as he moves effortlessly from fiery virtuoso runs to gentle, legato improvisations on the ballads.” SUITE CHARLOTTE

RICHIE BUCKLEY SAVOYHOTEL With his unique style and vir- tuoso technique, Richie Buckley, a self-taught saxophone player, is internationally recognised as one of Ireland’s leading jazz per- formers. He has been described as “extraordinary” (Irish Times, 2001), “something of a genius... [with] a world reputa- tion amongst saxophonists” (Irish Times,1999) and a musician whose “playing manages to be simultane- ously passionate and gentle, romantic and elegiac.” (Sunday Independent, 2001)
