Culture is not a static identity and keeps changing. The changing environmental development makes internal adaptation necessary for culture. Thus, a lot of changes have also been observed in the Mising culture too. The impact of urbanisation and modernization has brought a major eeconomic and socio-cultural transformation among the Mising tribe of Assam. Their society is changing not only in the aspects of socio-economic and political areas butalsointraditional beliefs andcultural practices. With the above background, an attempt has been made to understand the traditional and cultural practices among the Mising Tribe of Assam in particular and rural- urban context in general. Keywords: Mising Tribe, culture, cultural diversity, cultural Practices I. Statement Of The Problem The Misings, belonging to Tibeto-Burman ethnic group and formerly known as the Miris, which constitute the second largest scheduled tribe (Plains) group in Assam, have been playing a significant role in the culture and economy of the greater Assamese society in general and tribal society in particular. They with 5.9 lakh population (17.8 per cent of the state’s total tribal people) as per 2001 Census are mainly concentrated in the riverine areas of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat and Sonitpur districts of Assam. -

Rural tribal people of our Northeast India still seen relying on the traditional medicine prepared by our elders who are well expertise in handling the natural remedies from fauna. Dhemaji district of state Assam is inhabited by many tribes and among them Deori tribe contributes to the indigenous tribal population of the district. The present study focuses on this tribe and their traditional knowledge of using faunal species as medicine to heal different health problem. Due to dependence on modern medicinal treatment and anthropogenic activities, this tradition of using animal as remedy is not giving importance. Therefore it is an ardent need to research and conserve the ethno-zoological knowledge which was prevalent among the ancestors to treat different ailments. Therefore present study focuses on identifying the valuable medicinal properties of the animals. Languages and Peoples of the Eastern Himalayan Region (LPEHR) Deictic motion in Hakhun Tangsa Krishna Boro Gauhati University ABSTRACT This paper provides a detailed description of how deictic motion events are encoded in a Tangsa variety called Hakhun, spoken in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in India, and in Sagaing Region in Myanmar. Deictic motion events in Hakhun are encoded by a set of two motion verbs, their serial or versatile verb counterparts, and a set of two ventive particles. Impersonal deictic motion events are encoded by the motion verbs alone, which orient the motion with reference to a center of interest. Motion events with an SAP figure or ground are simultaneously encoded by the motion verbs and ventive particles. These motion events evoke two frames of reference: a home base and the speech-act location. The motion verbs anchor the motion with reference to the home base of the figure, and the ventives (or their absence) anchor the motion with reference to the location of the speaker, the addressee, or the speech-act. When the motion verbs are concatenated with other verbs, they specify motion associated with the action denoted by the other verb(s). The language of the Shymise-Chinese branch from Sino_ Tibetan group of language are known in Assam as the TAI language. The TURUNG and AITON living in Assam are Mongoloid and they belong to the TAI language family. The speakers of both TURUNG and AITON language are residing in many areas of Assam. The study of TURUNG and AITON language is very important because it is found only in spoken form. The new generation is not at all serious about their language. Moreover, though the Turung and Aiton belong to the same language family , there are many similarities and dissimilarities among them. So, this is an attempt to protect, to preserve and develop the TURUNG and AITON language and to highlight the similarities and dissimilarities. KEYWORDS: Turung, Aiton, Phoneme, Contrast, Preserve. INTRODUCTION : North-East India is comprised of eight states and they are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura. Among all eight states Assam is the biggest state by its area. North east is surrounded by China in the north, Bhutan in the west, Bangladesh in the east and Burma in the South. Assam is a multilingual and multi religious state where we found many languages and dialects to different language families. -

Email - [email protected] Abstract: It is essential to have an estimate of the economic characteristics of a tribe for its development. The Tai-Buddhist population of Assam comprises of the Tai Khamtis, Tai Phakes, Tai Khamyangs, Tai Turungs and Tai-Aitons. Among these the Tai-Turung is a tribe which has remained neglected from the mainstream. This paper with the help of primary data collected by a multistage sampling technique aims to study the economic characteristics of the Tai-Turungs. The paper finds that their Monthly Per Capita Income (MPCI) and employment level is low, while the dependency ratio is high compared to the nation and the state figures. Key words: Economic Characteristics, Tai-Buddhist, Tai-Turungs, Monthly Per Capita Income, Multistage sampling, Dependency ratio, Employment level. 1. INTRODUCTION: ‘Tai’ is a generic term meaning ‘the free’ or ‘free men’ that represents a major branch of the Mongoloid population of mainland Southeast Asia. In India, the Tai people live in the North East. By the term ‘north-east’ we mean eight states of India viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. A major part of the ‘Tai’ people of Assam is the ‘Turung’ or ‘Tairung’.According to Gait, (2010) the advent of the Turung people into Assam is believed to have occurred along with General Newbill, following which they started living in Toklai, Jorhat. -

A Study on Garo Language Conducted By Assam Institute of Research for Tribals and Scheduled Castes, Jawaharnagar, Ghy-22 1 2 PART-A A Brief Account of the Socio Cultural Life of the Garos 3 INTRODUCTION The Garos in retrospect and prospect: Opinion differ regarding the nomenclature : Garo and the Garos opine that the name has been assigned to the indigenous community by the non-Garos. It may be mentioned that the Garos themselves do not use the term which they believe does not represent the Community. Instead they introduce themselves as ‘Achik’, the literal meaning of ‘Achik’ is hill but when the word is in plural number viz. ‘Achikarang’, it represents the entire Garo Community. The people use the term ‘Ajang; to refer to the non-Garos and prefer to call themselves as ‘Achik Mande’ i.e. hill people. Similarly the term ‘Achik Achang’ signifies land of the Garos and the term ‘Achik Ku Chik’ is used for Garo languages. Another interpretation is that the term Garo1 is derived from the Bodo word ‘Gao’ meaning to separate or ‘Gar’ meaning to love or abandon. The Bodos and the Dimasas believe that the Garos have been separated community from them with separate nomenclature as ‘Gao’ or ‘Gaora’. The Bodos consider the Garos as their brothers. According to Majumdar2 the headquarter of the Garo Hills district Tura was known earlier as ‘Dhura’ and in due course the ‘Dhura’ became Garo. As such the inhabitants o fthe hilly areas of the South Goalpara came to be known as Garos. According to a legend prevalent among the Garos, there was a very powerful leader among the Garos in the Hills whose name was ‘Gara’ and the Community was known as ‘Garo’. -

Chapter 2 INTER-ETHNIC CONFLICTS IN NORTH EAST INDIA India as a whole has about 4,635 communities comprising 2,000 to 3,000 caste groups, about 60,000 of synonyms of titles and sub-groups and near about 40,000 endogenous divisions (Singh 1992: 14-15). These ethnic groups are formed on the basis of religion (Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, etc.), sect (Nirankari, Namdhari and Amritdhari Sikhs, Shia and Sunni Muslims, Vaishnavite, Lingayat and Shaivite Hindus, etc.), language (Assamese, Bengali, Manipuri, Hindu, etc.), race (Mongoloid, Caucasoid, Negrito, etc.), caste (scheduled tribes, scheduled castes, etc.), tribe (Naga, Mizo, Bodo, Mishing, Deori, Karbi, etc.) and others groups based on national minority, national origin, common historical experience, boundary, region, sub-culture, symbols, tradition, creed, rituals, dress, diet, or some combination of these factors which may form an ethnic group or identity (Hutnik 1991; Rastogi 1986, 1993). These identities based on religion, race, tribe, language etc characterizes the demographic pattern of Northeast India. Northeast India has 4,55,87,982 inhabitants as per the Census 2011. The communities of India listed by the „People of India‟ project in 1990 are 5,633 including 635 tribal groups, out of which as many as 213 tribal groups and surprisingly, 400 different dialects are found in Northeast India. Besides, many non- tribal groups are living particularly in plain areas and the ethnic groups are formed in terms of religion, caste, sects, language, etc. (Shivananda 2011:13-14). According to the Census 2011, 45587982 persons inhabit Northeast India, out of which as much as 31169272 people (68.37%) are living in Assam, constituting mostly the non-tribal population. -
