The Artist: Steven W. Bush is an accomplished metal sculptor, painter, and master fabricator. His works of art range from oil on canvas to large-scale sculptural installations for individuals, corporations, and collectors nationwide. Bush teaches at the Columbus College of Art and Design, in Columbus, Ohio, is a member of the New Albany Arts Council Board of Directors, and is the principal owner of smARTworks studio in Blacklick, Ohio, where he creates custom and commissioned artworks that may be found in collections in 27 states and five countries. Steve can be contacted at: www.stevenwbush.com or by calling 614-578-0322.

The Awards: The process of addition in fabrication is Steven Bush’s forte. First he draws many designs and lets the client pick the design that speaks the loudest. Then the client and artist detail the design to the color and size desired. “ After fifteen years I’ve learned that if the client helps on the decision making as to the look of the sculpture they are much happier with the results when taken from a two dimensional drawing to a three dimensional sculpture. This award represents working together as a sculpture of parts to a whole, and working with others to make a dream come true.

THE OHIO GOVERNOR’S YOUTH ART EXHIBITION

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, now in its thirty-ninth year, is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The Exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,052 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. Our purpose is to provide all budding young artists of the state with opportunities to advance their talent, whether that be through scholarships or simply experiencing the process of entering their work in a competition. The Exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist in our state.

The process of selecting art works for the State Exhibition begins on a regional level. The state is divided into 15 regional locations, with high school students in each region invited to enter work in that regional judging. Each region has a designated Regional Director, who is responsible for choosing the judges for his or her region and arranging specifics of the event.

This state judging takes place in Columbus; however, the judges for this level of competition are chosen from all over the country and are generally professional artists themselves, college level instructors, or both.

From the 13,500 regional entries from the 15 regions, approximately 3,000 are selected to enter the state judging. State jurors then select 300 for the actual Exhibition, with 25 of the 300 chosen to receive the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Scholarships are offered to seniors by more than 30 universities and col- leges of art. The selection of students to be offered scholarships is left strictly up to those institutions who offer them. The Governor’s Exhibition is merely a vehicle through which schools and students are brought together.

The Exhibition opens at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, across from the state capitol, in April and closes near the end of May. An awards ceremony is held at the Riffe Center Capitol Theatre in the students’ honor prior to the opening. The attendance at the awards ceremony is over 700 and the Exhibition attendance is at least 1,200. At the Exhibition awards ceremony, students receive Awards of Excellence and scholarship awards.
