The South-Western City Board of Education Met in Regular Session on December 13, 2010, 7:00 P.M The South-Western City Board of Education met in regular session on December 13, 2010, 7:00 p.m. at the District Service Center, 3805 Marlane Drive, Grove City, Ohio with the following members present: Karen Dover Mindy Garverick Cathy Johnson Jo Ellen Myers Randy Reisling 10-129 Ms. Dover moved that the Board of Education adopt the agenda as presented. Ms. Johnson seconded the motion. Roll Call: Ms. Dover, Aye Ms. Johnson, Aye Ms. Garverick, Aye Ms. Myers, Aye Mr. Reisling, Aye Motion Carried 10-130 Ms. Garverick moved that the Board of Education approve the minutes as presented for the following meeting. Regular Session – November 29, 2010 Ms. Johnson seconded the motion. Roll Call: Ms. Garverick, Aye Ms. Johnson, Aye Ms. Dover, Aye Ms. Myers, Aye Mr. Reisling, Aye Motion Carried PRESENTATIONS 1. Annual Financial Reporting Update – Hugh Garside, Treasurer a. Mr. Garside updated the Board on a new financial report that provides an overview of the District’s finances in a brief, easy to read format. Mr. Garside indicated that the report would be available on-line in the financial section of the District’s Web site and will be updated annually. 2. BoardDocs – Hugh Garside, Treasurer a. Mr. Garside provided an overview of the new BoardDocs agenda system that will be implemented in January 2011. The agenda will be available on-line for the public to view on the Thursday prior to each scheduled Monday Board meeting. BOARD REPORTS 1. Darbydale Elementary update – Dr. William Wise, Superintendent a. Dr. Wise, Superintendent, updated the Board on the plan for calamity day makeup days to be held January 3rd and 4th. Dr. Wise indicated that the plan was approved by staff and parents. PUBLIC PARTICIPAION RELATIVE TO AGENDA ITEMS There were no items for public participation relative to agenda items. LEGISLATIVE LIAISON REPORT – RANDY REISLING a. Mr. Reisling reported on the $8 billion dollar budget deficit looming in Ohio and the expectation that this deficit will affect schools, public and charter, universities, prisons, and other social services, including Medicaid. 1 STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT LIAISON REPORT – MINDY GARVERICK Ms. Garverick provided the Board with an update on the following student achievement items: J.C. Sommer Elementary School Students at J.C. Sommer sent letters and holiday cards to soldiers overseas. Holt Crossing Intermediate School Pennies for Peace – Students in Miss Plotts’ social studies classes read the book Three Cups of Tea and learned about the lack of education provided to children in Pakistan. The students collected spare change as part of the Pennies for Peace Program. The students learned that they receive a great opportunity through education. Franklin Heights High School NHS Inductees – Congratulations to the following 2010-2011 National Honor Society inductees: Karleeta Allen, Jacqueline Andrade, Matthew Bezold, Shayla Breedlove, Zachary Dennis, Michael Draudt, Christopher Francies, Lindsey Grimmet, Halima Hassan, Khadija Hassan, Angie Hernandez, Jacob Maier, Meaghan McCall, Katie McClain, Kristy Mounts, Britney Nichols, Inna Ryumshin, Hannah Simon, Swati Singhal, Maritza Will and Kierstan Wise. The Franklin Heights NJROTC Color Guard presented the colors at the OSU Men’s basketball game this past Sunday at St. John’s Arena. FHHS students MarShawn McCarrell and Michael Taylor are representatives on a community consortium that is addressing the teen violence issue on the Westside of Columbus. They are planning a Stop the Violence/Start the Healing Dialogue with Our Youth seminar to be held at the J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center on December 30. These young men are an inspiration to everyone in the greater Columbus community. Grove City High School All-Ohio Football Honors – Congratulations to Grove City High School senior Jake Green for receiving 1st Team All-Ohio Honors in Football. The wide receiver had 53 interceptions for 1104 yards and 11 touchdowns. University of Akron Honor Band – The following Grove City High School students have been named to the University of Akron Honor Band: Amber Atwell, Derek Bradford, Megan Davenport, Brittany Johnson, Ben McMurray (trumpet), and Emily Mulvany (oboe). OMEA All State Band – The following Grove City High School students have been named to the 2010 Ohio Music Education Association’s All State Band: Ben McMurray (trumpet), Syndi Penney (bass clarinet), Will England (alto sax), Hillary Hobbs (oboe), and Emily Mulvany (oboe). South-Western Career Academy DECA New York Experience – Eleven Hospitality Marketing students attended the DECA New York Experience to learn about the hospitality industry firsthand. Students participated in a Disney Theatre Marketing Workshop and a Dave & Buster’s Advertising and Promotional Workshop, where they created a new commercial for Dave and Buster’s – SWCA won! The students put their curriculum to the test in the following areas: Travel Safety, Air Travel, Accommodations, Ground Travel, U.S. Landmarks, Marketing Promotion and Advertising, Financial Literacy, Budgeting, and Map and Directional Reading. The event was sponsored in part by AAA. Photos are available for viewing on the South-Western Facebook site. 2 Community Service Finland Elementary School The students at Finland Elementary collected approximately 1,900 non-perishable food items for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Mrs. Nelson’s third grade collected more than 400 items to make them first in collections. Pleasant View Middle School Mrs. Hoy’s and Ms. Mesojedec’s TDH classes organized a food drive for the Holy Family Food Bank. The students collected 2,353 food items and $170.05 to be donated to the Food Bank. Franklin Heights High School Key Club – Members of the FHHS Key Club raised $300 for UNICEF this year; held a clothing drive for Haven House; and put together 29 shoe boxes of fun items for children in Africa through the Operation Christmas Child. They will also be giving placemats to Doctor’s West Hospital to bring holiday cheer to patients and will be doing some caroling along the way. Grove City High School Carolers – Twenty members of the Grove City High School German Club will be singing English and German Christmas Carols to more than 100 senior citizens at the Emeritus Senior Living Center at the Pinnacle. The students want to spread some holiday joy to others! South-Western Career Academy Gingerbread House Event – The Culinary Arts students participated in the St. Stephen’s Community House 15th Annual Gingerbread House Event at Jefferson Country Club. Students worked in groups and assembled a gingerbread village, which featured a festive carousel in the center of town, complete with gingerbread houses, evergreen trees, snowmen and gifts. The entry was sponsored by a local company, which donated $1,000 to St. Stephen’s on behalf of SWCA. 10-131 Ms. Dover moved that the Board of Education approve the Fiscal & Operational Management items as presented. A. FISCAL & OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT – KAREN DOVER 1. REVISED PERMANENT APPROPRIATIONS FOR FISCAL YEAR 2011 It is recommended that the Board of Education approve the revised permanent appropriations. (See X-1) 2. INVESTMENTS & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR NOVEMBER 2010 It is recommended that the Board of Education in accordance with Section 135.14 of the Ohio Revised Code approve November investments (See X-2) and Cash Position Report (See X-3). 3. PAYMENT OF BILLS It is recommended that the Board of Education approve payment of bills according to the list of checks for the month of November 2010. (See X-4) 3 4. DONATIONS It is recommended that the Board of Education accept the following donations and authorize letters of appreciation be sent to the donors. RESOLUTION GRANTING AUTHORITY FOR SOUTH-WESTERN CITY SCHOOLS TO ENTER INTO A SECOND AMENDMENT TO TOWER SITE LEASE AGREEMENT WITH T-MOBILE AT GROVE CITY HIGH SCHOOL WHEREAS, VoiceStream Columbus, Inc. d/b/a T-Mobile/Voicestream (“Voicestream”) has previously entered into a Communication Facility Site Lease Agreement (“Lease”) with the South- 4 Western City School District Board of Education (“Board”) to locate a wireless communication facility at Grove City High School (“Site”) on or about December 5, 2005; and WHEREAS, subsequent to the execution of the Lease, VoiceStream assigned all of its rights, title and interest in and to the Lease to T-Mobile Central LLC.
