Jane O’Neill Abundant Glass

WHAT? I make quirky, affordable and original glass art and prints encapsulating the landscape and architecture of the UK from the saddle of my bike.

 A range of fused glass coasters, cufflinks, prints and cards depicting cyclists riding through local landscapes  Rows of houses and beach huts full of local character  A host of glass rainbows

WHO? I am a designer and maker based in the Pennine town of . I am a keen cyclist, who loves exploring the local countryside and towns on my bike this gives me my inspiration.

I have worked with glass since 2009 and have developed my own unique style creating sculptural pieces of work including my Pennine houses and rainbow collection.

Delighted by the announcement that the was coming to in 2014 I began to explore ways of representing this momentous event in my glass work. This led to the development of my quirky illustrations of cyclists racing on the Tour de France route and my ‘cyclist on the hill’ sculptures. This collection was featured on BBC’s Country File in June 2014. This year I have extended this range to take in the 2015 route and the Eroica Britannia (Peak District).

HOW? I employ many techniques in my work including shaping sheets of clear and coloured glass, working with tiny particles of glass, glass powders and ceramic decals. Most of my work is fired multiple times in a kiln at around 700-800oC and is often finished by hand sanding and polishing.

WHY? I take delight in seeing people’s faces light up with pleasure and recognition when they view my work. I aim to create original quality items that will bring joy to the receiver.

TESTIMONIALS

“Jane first displayed her collection of glass coasters with us in October of last year and since then has proved extremely popular with our visitors. She has welcomed feedback both from us as a gallery and the public alike and with this added more items to her range including jewellery and prints as well as new designs in her glass coaster collection. Jane has really captured the essence of Yorkshire in her work and of course the Tour De France coming to Yorkshire this year; this has really proven a great commemorative collection for people to enjoy. Jane has provided us with regular deliveries to keep up with demand and has been a pleasure to work with. We look forward to continuing our work with Jane as the Tour De France nears and more and more visitors enjoy her work here on display.” (Jane Needham, Manager The Craft Centre and Design Gallery, Leeds, 2014)

“Stocking Abundant Glass products is one of the best decisions we have made. Jane’s work makes most of our customers stop and look and many buy. We placed an initial order with Jane, but rapidly ran out of lines and had to reorder in the hope that the stock would arrive in time to catch the Tour de France frenzy. Jane turned the orders round very quickly and was accommodating when we just needed a small order for specific prints.

Such was the success that we asked Jane if she would be willing to create a line specifically for a local, yet huge, cycling event. Jane was very interested and she arranged to come over to our area to explore and see how she could depict various places. She met up with us and we discussed how Jane could produce a line exclusive to us and another version that would be for open sale. We discussed between us which places should be used and how they would be featured.

Jane sent us some first drafts for us to approve/comment on and was gracious enough to adopt our suggestions. Even when one relatively minor item in one of the pictures didn’t seem to quite work for me, Jane sent more versions until we both felt happy with the final product. I felt that a really good working relationship and mutual respect had developed and not only am I looking forward to seeing the final images in production, but look forward to continuing with further related projects with Jane in the future.” (Val Hufton, Because I Like It, Bakewell 2015)
