Village Fête in the Environs of Tsarskoe Selo

PIERRE ALEXANDROVICH PARISOT, called LUDOVIKI (Paris 1750 - 1820) Village Fête in the Environs of Tsarskoe Selo signed 'P. Ludowick' (on the reverse) oil on canvas 70.5 x 89 cm (27¾ x 35 in) ‘How tender is the wealth of Flora here. How the pleasance of the air is linked with the goddess of these beautiful heights.’ - Mikhail Lomonosov’s Ode to Elizabeth, For the Royal Favour Shown to him in the Town of Tsarskoe Selo, 1750 N THIS JOVIAL VILLAGE SCENE, REMINISCENT OF Dutch sixteenth-century genre painting, or a fête champêtre, the local fête appears to be in full swing with merriment and dancing. On the left- hand side, a group of villagers drink together around a table. Two of the men, with heavy eyelids that speak of the day’s excesses, lean across ito embrace their less than amused female companions. The large jug by the side of the table suggests that the wine will continue to flow for some time to come. To their right, a mother affectionately holds her daughter’s hand, as she nibbles on a biscuit with much enjoyment, whilst her sister sits contently in their mother’s lap. Further to the right, in the centre of the painting, a young girl with a golden, crescent-shaped kokoshnik on her head appears to have caught the attention of more than one suitor; the arrival of a new gentleman, who appears keen to take over the lead in the dance, disquiets her partner. The girl wears her hair in a single, long, braided plait, finished off with a ribbon, as was characteristic of unmarried women of the time.

At the time they were hidden, but in 1991 the discoverers of the burial pit at Ganina said that it contains the remains of those shot in the Ipatiev house of the Royal family and their servants, with the exception of Crown Prince Alexei and Grand Duchess Maria.

At 1:15 in the afternoon Alix gave birth to a son who was given the name of Alexei. Everything had happened remarkably soon – for me at least. In the morning, as usual, I visited Mama, then I received a report from Kokovtsov and the artillery officer. Klepikov wounded at Wafangou, and I went to Alix to have lunch. She was already upstairs, and half an hour later this happy event came about. I have no words worthy enough to be able to thank God for the consolation granted by Him in this year of hard trials. Darling Alix felt quite well. Mama came at 2 and sat by my side before her first meeting with her new grandchild. At five I went to church service together with the children where the whole family gathered. Wrote a lot of telegrams. The cover photo shows a silver ruble of 1895 with the head of Emperor Nicholas II and later stamped on it the text "Fall of the House of Romanovs March 1917". March is in many ways a dramatic month for the Romanov Dynasty. The start of the dynasty, with Michael Feodorovich's election as Tsar in 1613 is commemorated in March. Tsar Alexei Michailovich was born in March 1629. Emperor Paul I was killed in March 1801. In March 1845 Emperor Alexander III was born. In March 1855 Emperor Nicholas I died. In March 1861 Emperor Alexander II liberated the serfs, but it did not prevent him to be killed by the "People's Will" in March 1881. In March 1917 Emperor Nicholas II abdicated and Emperor Michael II deferred his acceptance of the throne until the people had approved the continuation of the monarchy - it never happened, and it was the end of the Romanov dynasty's reign. The Romanov dynasty started in March, with a Michael, and ended in March with a Michael.
