Anne de France: Art et pouvoir en 1500, acts of a colloquium that took place in Moulins in March 2012, edited by Thierry Crépin-Leblond and Monique Chatenet, contains relatively brief but invaluable chapters stocked with new information and original interpretations. It is divided in two: the first half is dedicated to studies about Anne of France, daughter of Louis XI and sister of his son Charles VIII, and the other half to her patronage and that of other notable, politically active noblewomen--regents and queens--influenced by Anne circa 1500. Throughout the entire volume, the authors seek to indicate ways in which these women’s acts and patronage of art and architecture exhibit some kind of political authority. They unearth documents, explore the visual valence of objects and architecture, and examine literary texts to argue that Anne of France, Margaret of Austria, and Anne of Brittany played a significant role in the history of Europe in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. A major strength of this collection is how authors are deeply engaged with drilling down into the documents to find new material to apply to the questions they pose or offer new interpretations of little-known material. -

The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus. -

This broader picture of court politics and diplomatic networks – which also relied on familial and kin ties – provides a way of studying the political role of women in early modern Europe. This role has to be studied taking into account the overlapping of familial and political concerns, where the intersection of women as mediators and coordinators of extended networks is a central feature of European societies. -

ISSN: 1949-9833 Juan de Flandes and His Financial Success in Castile Jessica Weiss During the late fifteenth century, the Netherlandish painter Juan de Flandes traveled to the court of Isabel, queen of Castile and León. He remained in her service until her death and subsequently secured multiple commissions for contributions to large-scale altarpiece projects. The financial documents associated with his career and his works reveal a high level of economic success in comparison to other artists active in Castile, including his fellow court painter Michel Sittow. This investigation into the fiscal opportunities available to a Netherlandish émigré demonstrates the economic power of locally produced Flemish art in sixteenth-century Iberia.. 1 The Netherlandish painter Juan de Flandes (active 1496–1519) had a lucrative career on the Iberian Peninsula, and his professional history serves as an important case study on the economic motivations for immigrant artists.1 He first appears in 1496 in the court documents of Isabel, queen of Castile and León (1451–1504), and he used his northern European artistic training to satisfy the queen’s demand for Netherlandish-style panel paintings. -

Palenzuela Relations between Portugal and Castile Relations between Portugal and Castile in the Late Middle Ages – 16th centuries Vicente Ángel Álvarez Palenzuela Relations between the Portuguese monarchy and the monarchies of Leon or Castile (the Kingdom of Castile was the historical continuation of the Kingdom of Leon) after the unification of the latter two kingdoms show a profundity, intensity and continuity not to be found among any of the other peninsular kingdoms during the Middle Ages, even though these were also very close. The bond between the two went far beyond merely diplomatic relations. The matrimonial unions between the two were so strong and frequent that it is possible to claim that both kingdoms were ruled by a single dynasty during the entire Middle Ages.1 Despite this, any attempt by one or the other to unify both kingdoms was destined to failure, and more often than not, to harsh confrontation leading to prolonged resentment and suspicions which were difficult to overcome.2 The very close relations are, in my opinion, the result of a common historical, cultural, and mental 1 This claim may seem to be exaggerated. Five of the nine kings of the first Portuguese dynasty had Castilian wives: Alfonso II, Sancho II, Alfonso III, Alfonso IV, and Pedro I (and to some degree the same could be said of Fernando I). Leonor, wife of Duarte, was also Castilian, even if she was considered to be “Aragonese”, and so were the three successive wives of Manuel I. -

Wikipedia, which has 35 million articles in 288 languages, is written by volunteers around the world and its articles are edited by registered users. It has been run since 2003 by a non-profit organisation, the Wikipedia Foundation, which is headquartered in San Francisco in the United States. Wikipedia receives about 500 million single visits a month making it one of the 10 most visited websites in the world, according to the award foundation. The 50,000-euro ($54,000) award is one of eight prizes handed out yearly by a foundation named Wikipedia's US founder Jimmy Wales (C) receives the after Spain's Princess Leonor. Aragon 96 Bibliography 102 2 Abstract Dynastic marriages were an important tool of diplomacy utilised by monarchs throughout medieval and early modern Europe. Despite this, no consensus has been reached among historians as to the reason for their continued use, with the notable exception of ensuring the production of a legitimate heir. This thesis will argue that the creation and maintenance of alliances was the most important motivating factor for English, Castilian and Aragonese monarchs. Territorial concerns, such as the protection and acquisition of lands, as well as attempts to secure peace between warring kingdoms, were also influential elements considered when arranging dynastic marriages. Other less common motives which were specific to individual marriages depended upon the political, economic, social and dynastic priorities of the time in which they were contracted. -

The Marquisate of the Valley of Oaxaca was carefully constructed during his lifetime to be his lasting legacy in New Spain. The goal of this dissertation is to reexamine published primary sources in light of this new argument and integrate unknown archival material to trace the development of a lasting legacy by Cortés and his direct heirs in Spanish colonial Mexico. Part one looks at Cortés’s life after the conquest of Mexico, giving particular attention to the themes of fame and honor and how these ideas guided his actions. The importance of land and property in and after the conquest is also highlighted. Part two is an examination of the marquisate, discussing the key features of the various landholdings and also their importance to the legacy Cortés sought to construct. -
