General information on the research and development activity of the Organisation: 1. Mission Statement of the Organisation as presented in its Foundation Charter Foundation Charter of the Institute of History of SAS (signed by the SAS Presidium on September 9, 2003) confirmed the character and the main tasks of the institute, which – being modified by the previous periods of development – had existed since its formation in 1943 (as the institute of Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts, since 1953 the part of the Slovak Academy of Sciences). According to this charter the aim of the IH SAS as the scientific institution of basic research in the field of history is the research on the history of Slovakia since the earliest times till contemporary period in its communication with the historical development of Europe and the world. Fulfilling its tasks the institute cooperates with the other institutions from the branch of the society and human sciences in Slovakia and abroad, especially with universities. According to the given law it carries out the scientific education, publishes the results of the scientific research in its periodicals and non- periodical publications. The research outputs serve other scientific institutions, schools of all levels, public institutions. Through the institute’s popularization activities they also serve to form the historical consciousness, cultural and intellectual level of the society. It also gives expert opinions to the state institutions and various scientific and cultural bodies. 2. Summary of R&D activity pursued by the Organisation during the assessed period, from both national and international aspects and its incorporation in the European Research Area (max. 10 pages) In the years 2003 – 2006 the Institute of History SAS has confirmed again that it is the key institution of the Slovak historiography. The poof of it is not only a number of its scientists, other employees with university degree and doctoral students, but first of all the concentration and variety of the researched themes, the number of domestic and international projects, publications and responses to the scientific outputs, the number of presentations at domestic and international conferences. The central position of IH SAS is also due to the fact that it is the only institution, which deals systematically with the basic research of the Slovak history from the beginnings up to late 20th century and with the selected themes from the general history and the history of the sciences and technology. From this point of view the institute has the unique place not only in Slovakia but also in Europe and in the world. Since 1989 this systematic research follows the strategic aim to re-write the synthesis of the whole Slovak history. In the assessed period has been made an important step towards this goal in elaborating a conception and starting the synthesis of the 20th century Slovak history. 6 In 2003 – 2006 it is possible to characterize the institute’s research with several features: 1. Besides the traditional mapping of the national and world history, there have been more visible basic research priorities. First among them was the systematic study of the 20th century, then social history (issues of nobility in the Slovak territory, of elites), gender-studies and the research on problems of identities. 2. An interdisciplinary approach towards the themes has been intensified and with it also an interdisciplinary co-operation. The research crossed more and more the borders of the “pure” historiography and to deal with historical phenomena it used not only outputs but also methods of other society and human sciences. In this way has continued the study of society modernization, forming of identities, phenomena of everyday life, collective historical memory, role of churches and minorities in social development, of ethnic stereotypes, national symbols etc. 3. More than in the past the research on political, economic, social and cultural history of Slovakia and Slovaks reached for Central European or European context; partially it was also the result of the institute’s research orientation in the field of general history. These characteristic features may be seen in the titles of the projects, published outputs, scientific conferences. This move forward caused the bigger international acceptance not only of the scientific results but also of the themes of the Slovak historiography itself. It may be said, that the Slovak historical science – also due to the activities of IH SAS – stepped out of the “Czechoslovak shadow”, in which it was in international context for longer time hidden. The Slovak historiography became more visible on such global platforms of historians as are world congresses and also in this case took the IH SAS its credit for this development. The institute hosted two pre-congress conferences (to the XX World Congress of Historians and XIV International Economic History Congress) and its employees presented themselves at the both congresses with 3 papers. The dominant status of IH SAS reflects the number of international projects in which its scientists have taken part. While at the end of the previous and at the beginning of this decade the majority of institute’s projects was bilateral or of minor scope, in the period of 2003 – 2006 started the trend of participating at bigger international projects: • IH SAS together with Institute of Ethnology SAS obtained the 5 FP EU project European Doctorate and as its results had been positive, it was prolonged also for the 6 FP EU. • As the part of the Slovak national team the scientists of IH SAS have joined the ESF project Representations of the Past: The Writing of National Histories in Europe, which in a short time shall end with 3 international monographs. • Another key project has for the institute represented the 6 FP EU Network of Excellence „CLIOHRES.net: Creating Innovative Links and Overview for a New History Research Agenda for the Citizens of a Growing Europe“; Research group: Frontiers and Identities. The IH SAS team deals with this complex and complicated problem from the point of view of Central Europe, inclusive Slovakia. With these projects the matter of the international co-operation of the institute’s employees is not at all closed.
