Šúrsky channel 4-21-15-005 all the section The Danube river with its system of branches represents the predominant factor in creation of the supplies and quality of ground water. The Danube gravel alluvia are a significant reservoir of ground water and they represent the biggest accumulation of ground water in Central Europe. The main source of ground water is the infiltrated water of the Danube, while the greatest sources of drinking water are located in the alluvial zone of the river. For the above reason, this territory is protected by law and it entire belongs to the significant water supply area of PWA (protected water area) Žitný ostrov. Protected water management area of Žitný ostrov has an area of nearly 1,400 km2, however, it represents only about 20% of the total area (about 7,000 km2) of all PWMA in Slovakia.

  • POLITICAL FUNCTIONS of URBAN SPACES THROUGH the AGES Town Types in EUROPEAN Comparison Based on the Towns ATLASES Abstracts
POLITICAL FUNCTIONS OF URBAN SPACES THROUGH THE AGES 2017 September 14–15, Krakow TOWN TYpes IN European coMparison BASED ON THE TOWNS Atlases (2017 September 16, Krakow) ABSTRACTS 1 POLITICAL FUNCTIONS OF URBAN SPACES THROUGH THE AGES 2017 September 14–15, Krakow Places of Political Representation in Towns I / Orte der politischen Repräsentation in Städten I Medieval Italian Town Halls ROSA SMURRA (Bologna) One of the most enduring legacy of Communal Italy is represented by the Town hall, the palatium comunis as it was called to mark the achievement made by the local governments. Many Italian piazzas are dominated by these public palaces whose origins, in some cases, can be traced back to the late 12th century, after the peace of Constance. The palatium comunis, a multi-functional building, underwent several transformations to effectively em- body values and needs of those urban societies, which this paper aims to illustrate. For this reason an overview of the different cases of Italian town halls, over a period spanning two centuries, will be given. Topography and functions of these public buildings will be also considered in relation to understand how they, giving a strong sense of city’s sovereignty, shaped a new landscape in medieval towns. • Rethinking the Genre: Urban Biographies As Means of Creating Critical Public Spheres
Urban History (2021), 48, 162–178 doi:10.1017/S0963926819001123 SURVEY AND SPECULATION Rethinking the genre: urban biographies as means of creating critical public spheres Jaroslav Ira*† Charles University, Faculty of Arts, Department of General History, Nám. Email: [email protected] Abstract In this article, I rethink the genre of urban biographies and argue that it can be given new potency when remodelled to become a means of reinvigorating the critical public. In the first part, I reflect upon some of the recent biographies of cities in the Czech Republic. In the second part, I discuss promising strategies, drawn from a sample of innovative urban biographies. In the final part, I outline the guiding principles of an adapted model for urban biographies. I propose that the cities must be repoliticized and recentred in the biographies, which entails adopting a political concept of the city, a deconstructive approach, utilization of the urban presence and a more urban-sensitive treatment of time. In an ever urbanizing world, many societal challenges have taken on urban dimen- sions. Some scholars encourage stronger urban citizenship,1 seeing the contempor- ary period as a time in which cities again become actors vis-à-vis weakening nation-states, whereas others declare the urban sphere to be a critical field of the social struggle.2 Cities have become a prime locus of identity conflicts and memory clashes, or, as one radical public historian put it, ‘crucial barometers of a society’s attitude toward preserving the past’.3 In this context, it is hardly surprising that the † The work was supported by the European Regional Development Fund-Project ‘Creativity and Adaptability as Conditions of the Success of Europe in an Interrelated World’ (No.
