The movie is not fast on its feet and contains little action but it makes up for it all with a well told and engaging story. Its a nice piece of Gothic melodrama rather than a Gothic horror as it’s made out to be not least because its concern is to humanise rather than exploit its subject matter. Brad Anderson is one of our most underrated filmmakers, bringing his precise directorial eye to works like “Session 9” and “Transsiberian,” while also taking time to elevate shows such as “Fringe,” “The Wire” and “Boardwalk Empire.” When he’s working with the right material, Anderson is a craftsman, never wasting a shot or allowing a moment to feel under-considered. Even films that arguably fell apart at some point in the production process like “The Call” or “Vanishing on 7 th Street” have been elevated by Anderson’s involvement. (And those interested in genre should seek out his episode of “Masters of Horror” titled “Sounds Like,” one of the best in the short-lived Showtime anthology series.) My clear admiration for the director amplifies my frustration with his latest. The dread and atmosphere of something like “Session 9” or “The Machinist” that should have been a natural fit here is absent. It may not be his worst film overall, but “Stonehearst” is Anderson’s flattest film, a disappointingly shallow affair that wastes an opportunity to breathe life into a timeless Edgar Allen Poe short story. The opening scene of “Stonehearst Asylum” sets up a film that, sadly, doesn’t follow. A young woman named Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale) is being paraded in front of a room of mental health experts. The doctor in charge (Brendan Gleeson) claims that she is mentally ill, however Anderson films the scene in a way that makes the men in the room menacing, teasing a film that should follow about how much energy was expended in medical circles to marginalize what was perceived as a lesser gender. Female sexuality was an illness to be cured. And yet even this opening scene is something of a misdirect. As Gleeson’s mad doctor says, quoting directly from the Poe story on which this is loosely based, “ Believe nothing you hear, and only half that you see. ” The story abruptly shifts to an asylum shrouded in fog. Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) is the Jonathan Harker of this story, the man coming to the dangerously-lit castle in the middle of the night. Echoes of “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” and “Shutter Island” hang heavy in the air, again promising a film with something to say and personality to spare; setting a table on to which too slight a meal is placed.

Sadly we lost another member of the wastewater community - Louis Beauchamp "The Sultan of Sludge" as he was affectionately called by his son Dave who is currently our collections systems committee chair died over the holiday with his family by his side. His passion remains in the wastewater field through his son Dave who strives to make a positive impact in the industry he loved. He will be missed by family friends and all those that came to know him. More will be shared on Louis career in the next MEWEA newsletter. On January 1st, 2017 at high noon on Old Orchard Beach Nick Konstanoloukis from Mechanic Falls Sanitary District plunged into the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for Maine Special Olympics. Thanks Nick for representing MEWEA!! The following quote was taken from a news story in Detroit, Michigan after a large sinkhole formed on Christmas Eve over a large diameter deep sewer pipe and I think our members need to continue to emphasis the importance of our buried infrastructure to our elected officials. "I would say somebody was falling asleep," Heath said. "Out of sight, out of mind — that's the mentality of too many bureaucratic people running systems." Our Young Professionals (YP’s) have scheduled their NEXT MEWEA EVENT: Family Skate Day: Friday, January 27 2017, 5:00-8:00 Thompson's Point Arena (Portland). Just a laid-back day to get people together for a sort of family day for MEWEA.

  • A Critical Study of the Madhouse in Gothic Literature
The Literature of Madness: A Critical Study of the Madhouse in Gothic Literature Benjamin E. Noad Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts and Humanities Division of Literature and Languages University of Stirling July 2018 1 ABSTRACT This thesis is a critical study of British and American Gothic prose representations of madness and the madhouse. This focuses on historical changes in asylum practice from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first century, specifically from 1846 to 2014. While Gothic scholarship generally regards madness as being identifiable within most works of the genre, few studies have attempted to explain why it is that the Gothic’s fascination with madness has endured beyond its literary origins in the late eighteenth century. Surprisingly, no full-length critical study has yet historically documented the Gothic mode’s longstanding preoccupation with the madhouse, especially given how numerous these encounters in Gothic fictions are. For this reason, the present study turns its attention exclusively towards the institutional figure of the madhouse: a territory where madness has already been labelled into existence. The object of this thesis is to demonstrate how the Gothic text is haunted by notions of madness, and how in turn, the madhouse is haunted by discourses of the Gothic. This reading – informed by hauntology – of the Gothic madhouse space argues that by ‘gothicising’ the medical institution, Gothic fictions appeal to a memory of what has come before and anticipates a future for madness in Western culture. For this reason, Gothic encounters with the madhouse (where madness is simultaneously present and absent) are knowingly engaged with critiquing, politicising, rejecting, or even ignoring, the historical discourses on madness with which they are contemporary.

ARTICLE Received 30 Nov 2016 | Accepted 25 Jul 2017 | Published 1 Sep 2017 DOI: 10.1057/palcomms.2017.88 OPEN “It fixates”: indie quiets and the new Gothics Joan Hawkins1 ABSTRACT The article attempts to make several interventions. Following Jamie Sexton’s work on Independent Horror, it revisits the vexed status of horror within American Inde- pendent Cinema. Not only is indie horror frequently omitted from discussion of American Independent Cinema, but low budget, direct-to-DVD and video-on-demand indie horror titles are frequently omitted from academic discussions of horror. This has the effect of skewing our understanding of the genre. From there the article moves to consider a specific subgenre of indie horror that has been gaining in popularity: the Quiet Horror film—a category that contains the sub-genre of indie-Gothic films. Lastly, the paper moves on to a close reading of a specific low budget indie Gothic title, Absentia. 1 Indiana University, Cinema and Media Studies, Media School, Bloomington, IN, USA PALGRAVE COMMUNICATIONS | 3:17088 | DOI: 10.1057/palcomms.2017.88 | www.nature.com/palcomms 1 ARTICLE PALGRAVE COMMUNICATIONS | DOI: 10.1057/palcomms.2017.88 ike Flanagan’s Absentia (2011, FallBack Plan Produc- American Independent and horror cinema (Sexton, 70). What Mtions; US $70,000) belongs to a film cycle that straddles that means for film scholarship is an impoverished and two important trends in contemporary horror: low incomplete film history, and a frequently inaccurate portrayal budget independent production and the New Gothic. The fact of contemporary horror and contemporary horror audiences. that this film and others like it have remained outside scholarly As has been noted elsewhere, there has always been a thriving discourse indicates a certain structuring absence in genre and horror video and DVD collector culture (Hawkins, 2000).

The police are already on the scene, so now it's up to firemen Manu (Ferran Terraza) and Alex (David Vert) to break down the door and ensure that no harm has come to her. Upon arriving at the building, everything appears normal. But the calm atmosphere at the moment betrays the horrors that begin to unfold after the firemen break down the tenant's door and experience something that no one would believe had it not been captured on camera.
