On Jan. 31, the girls went head-to-head with teams across Long Island at the Smithtown West Competition. According to coach Jessica Thompson, it has been a long and bumpy road for these girls, who have shown dedication, perseverance and strength. In the words of captain Lila Nolan, “No other sport wants you to look pretty while screaming like a man, holding another person in the air, tossing them, catching them and smiling!” Cheerleading is a tough sport, but Thompson said the girls made it look easy. Congratulations on taking home the second-place trophy. The next stop is the Cheer Extreme Nationals by the Sea in Virginia Beach this March.

At the event, the district’s robotics team, “The Men in Black,” which is comprised of Finley Middle School and Glen Cove High School students, was honored with the Sportsmanship Award. The Men in Black used two robots in the contest, competing against 30 teams from approximately 20 schools. All of the participants took part in the game “Nothing but the Net,” which tasks students with operating their robot to drop balls into a net, without making contact with the net. Four robots making up two teams compete in each match. According to Lisa Pignataro, the team’s adviser, the robots are programmed with four ways to get the ball in the net, which include low lift, high lift, low goal or high goal. Finely Middle School will also host the Southern New York VEX VRC State Championship on March 5.

The Glen Cove High School varsity football team was recognized by district administrators and the Glen Cove Board of Education at the Feb. 1 meeting. The team was celebrated for being named Conference III Big Four Champions, after a terrific season of hard-fought wins. In addition to recognizing the team’s accomplishments, Coach Pete Kopecky was honored for his 100th career win. Linebacker Gaetano Famiglietti, recipient of the Bill Piner Award and quarterback Mike Payton, recipient of the National Football Foundation’s Scholar-Athlete Award, were also applauded for their success on and off the field. Glen Cove High School Principal Antonio Santana was in attendance and presented the team’s captains with a commemorative gold football that was given to the high school by the National Football League Super Bowl High School Honor Roll on behalf of Glen Cove graduate Joe Rizzo (1969). The honor roll celebrates high schools and communities that have contributed to Super Bowl history. Superintendent of Schools Maria Rianna told the team she couldn’t be any prouder of all they had accomplished.

“You played beautifully. You never gave up, and you have made Glen Cove very, very proud,” Rianna said.
