  • Marco Ferreri Retrospective 1 – 14 December at Ciné Lumière
press release nov 06 Marco Ferreri Retrospective 1 – 14 December at Ciné lumière About the Retrospective The Italian Cultural Institute and the Institut français, London, in collaboration with Cinecittà Holding are delighted to present a fortnight-long tribute to maverick Italian director Marco Ferreri. The retrospective features a representative selection of 13 films from all four decades of his filmmaking career, and showcases impressive (and surprising) performances from some of European cinema’s finest actors, including Marcello Mastroianni, Roberto Benigni, Gérard Dépardieu, Catherine Deneuve, Philippe Noiret, Michel Piccoli and Ugo Tognazzi. A highlight of the season will be the two screenings of Ferreri’s masterpiece La Grande Bouffe (Blow-Out) on a newly-restored print provided by Cinecittà especially for the occasion. • Architecture in Film Movie List 2015
An Architecture in Film List (Comprised by John DeFazio) For AIA CRAN This of course is just a partial list. It has to be. Every movie has art direction and uses space and movement (two of the key ingredients of both architecture and film-making) as the nature of their media. I would have to list every movie ever made! This list is one that I would give to my students for their research projects due to particular aspects of how architecture (and some time architects) are depicted or used in an explicit (or implicit) way. Many of them can be found on Netflix; some appear on Tuner Movie Classics (TMC) on cable from time to time; others you will need to hunt down in libraries or flat out purchase. All films listed in IMDb’s list of Top 100 Greatest Movies of All Time could be just as well on this list here. (You can find them here: www.imdb.com/list/ls055592025/ ) If they appear on both lists you can bet they are definitely ‘must sees’ for architecture in film. I also forgot to mention that I had set up a Facebook web page On Architecture & Film. You can join up there at: www.facebook.com/groups/211202132234514/ I also mentioned my son Aaron David DeFazio is a recent Columbia Graduate and film-maker. His short film, TOP FLOOR, which was selected by and debuted at the 013 South by Southwest Film Festival. You can find that here: https://vimeo.com/52660967 Thank you all for your warm reception to our screening of Jacque Tati’s MON ONCLE.

  • Gender, Sexuality and Social Identity in the New Millennium ABSTRACT
Flinders University Languages Group Online Review Volume 5, Issue 1, April 2016 ISSN 1446–9219 Taking the pulse: Gender, sexuality and social identity in the new millennium Dr Luciana d’Arcangeli Flinders University ABSTRACT At first glance, post-2000 Italian cinema may appear to be undergoing a new, though still limited, golden age, the main characteristics of which are an increased presence of women, the expression and portrayal of ‘alternative’ sexuality, and the representation of social identities sufficiently durable to survive (and possibly thrive in) the volatile present with its apparently limitless “liquid” flexibility, deregulation of social relationships, and loosening and transformation – if not total crumbling – of social, religious and working institutions that Zygmunt Bauman describes in his seminal 2003 book Liquid Modernity. This article offers an overview of gender, sexuality, and social identity in Italian cinema from 2000 to the present day, that by its very nature is not exhaustive but focuses on the most significant examples and trends in films and data, assessing the progress, or lack of it, achieved in that period. Introduction At first glance, post-2000 Italian cinema may appear to be undergoing a new, though still limited, golden age the main characteristics of which are an increased presence of women in a variety of roles both on and off screen, the expression and portrayal of ‘alternative’ sexuality, and the representation of social identities sufficiently durable to survive (and possibly thrive in) the volatile present with its apparently limitless “liquid” flexibility, deregulation of social relationships, and loosening and transformation – if not total crumbling – of social, religious and working institutions (Bauman 2003).

  • Edinburgh University Press Masculinity & Italian Cinema
    1. INTRODUCTION Press Cinema This book is about a particular moment in the history of Italian cinema when the understanding of what it is to be a man undergoes a radical redefinition. Much has been written about experiences of male disempowerment and vulnerability in film, the emphasis of this scholarshipItalian invariably being either on representations of scarred, damagedUniversity male bodies or on accounts of male suffering and loss. Less has been written& about the opportunities that cinema provides for considering masculinity in relation to an experience of transfor- mation. It is not just that change, with its complexities and contradictions, is difficult to locate and observe.1 The problem is how the idea of change itself seems to raise immediate suspicion, if not blatant pessimism. Paul Powrie, Ann Davies and Bruce Babington, for example, have argued that the image of a new, transformed cinematic man, beyond the oppressive constraints of patriarchy,Edinburgh may merely represent ‘a repositioning or realignment with patri- archal power structures’.2 Accepting the meaning of change as ‘the process of becoming somethingMasculinity different’, one could argue that in studies of masculinity in film too much attention has been paid to considerations about the expected end result (a fully formed new masculinity), rather than to the intricacies of the very process of becoming something different. To consider change does not necessarily mean looking at where this change has already run its course. It also makes sense to pay attention to the points where the change appears less than smooth and where walls hampering the possibility for further trans- formation spring up.
