A Dendrochronological Investigation Into a 1920S Railroad Logging Operation AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Pamela K. Brauner Although the timber industry was the major economic force in the lives of several generations of Oregon families, very little archaeological investigation has been done on the dozens of abandoned logging camps that are scattered throughout the forests of the Pacific Northwest. This project focuses on Camp 1, a 1920s era railroad logging operation in the western Cascade Mountains of Clackamas County, approximately 8 miles southeast of Estacada, Oregon. The study contributes to a growing archaeological railroad logging database in Oregon by locating and documenting the spatial organization of one of these forgotten camps and its associated log transportation system, a railroad incline. Archival research, oral histories, photogrammetry, dendrochronology, and archaeological survey methods generated the data that was used to determine site boundaries, as well as locate and identify the function of activity loci represented by surface features and debris scatters. This study demonstrated that tree ages obtained from tree-ring counts on the trees that had regenerated on the site during a systemic survey of the probable location of the camp, in conjunction with organic artifacts such as springboard cut stumps, and the location of artifact concentrations is an effective method to establish site boundaries. The dendrochronological study revealed three disturbance events that have affected the current archaeological record found on the site, two forest fires and the construction of a landing strip. Although Camp 1 has experienced significant cultural and natural impacts to the archaeological resources found on the site, this study has demonstrated that heavily disturbed sites still possess information that is useful to answer a variety of research questions regarding the life ways, technological systems, and use of space in temporary logging camps where thousands of people once lived and worked in the forests of the region. © Copyright by Pamela K. Argow Vienna, Virginia Winter 2015-2016 FIRE TOWERS IN THE HEART OF DIXIE On Saturday, January 16 we convened the 26th annual member of the Alabama Forestry Commission who had meeting of the Forest Fire Lookout Association at the Talladega purchased and moved a fire tower to his woodlands; the project Ranger Station, on the Talladega National Forest in Talladega, leader of the Smith Mountain fire tower restoration; the publisher Alabama (guess that is somewhere near Talladega!). Our host, of a travel magazine that promoted the restoration; a retired District Ranger Gloria Nielsen, and Alabama National Forests district forester with the Alabama Forestry Commission; a U.S. Assistant Archaeologist Marcus Ridley presented a fine Forest Service District Ranger (our host), and a zone program including a review of the multi-year Horn Mountain archaeologist for the Forest Service.     United States Department of Agriculture Fire Lookouts Eldorado National Forest Background Fire suppression became a national priority around 1910, when the country was stricken by what has been considered the largest wildfire in US history. The Big Blowup fire as it was called, burned over 3,000,000 acres (12,000 km) in Washington, Idaho, and Montana. After the Big Blowup, Fire Lookout towers were built across the country in hopes of preventing another “Blowup”. At this time Plummer Lookout. Can lookouts were primarily found in tall trees with rickety ladders and you see the 2 people? platforms or on high peaks with canvas tents for shelters. This job was not for the faint of heart. This did little to offer long‐term support for the much needed “Fire Watcher”, so by 1911 permanent cabins and cupolas were constructed on Mountain Ridges, Peaks, and tops. In California, between 1933 and 1942, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crews reportedly built 250 fire lookout towers. These crews also helped build access roads for the construction of these towers. Fire lookouts were at peak use from the 1930s through the 1950s. During World War II fire lookouts were assigned additional duties as Enemy Aircraft Spotters protecting the countries coastal lines and beaches. By the 1960s the Fire Lookouts were being used less frequently due to the rise in technology. Many lookouts were closed, or turned in to recreational facilities. Big Hill On the Eldorado ... Today, more than 8,000 tree species—about 10 percent of the world’s total—are threatened with extinction, mostly driven by habitat destruction or overharvesting. Global climate change will certainly cause this number to increase significantly in the years to come. Here at the Garden, we care for many individual at-risk trees (representing 48 species) within our diverse, global collection. Many of these species come from areas of the world where the Garden is working to restore forest ecosystems and the trees in them. Overall, we have nearly 6,000 individual trees in our main Garden, some dating from the time of founder Henry Shaw. Thousands more trees thrive at nearby Shaw Nature Reserve, as part of the Garden’s commitment to native habitat preservation, conservation, and restoration. Regardless of where endangered trees are found—close to home or around the world—their survival requires action by all of us.
