    A 2021 BGES Civil War Field University Program: The Retreat from Gettysburg Presented by Parker Hills July 11–15, 2021, from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania It had been three days unlike any in the history of this great conflict—indeed, in the history of the United States. The violence of the battles at Gettysburg had exhausted the resources of the armies and had bled them practically white. The burden on the medical staffs were unprecedented. Practically every building was a hospital, human and animal debris was everywhere. Units had lost coherence and combat resources were exhausted, as were foodstuffs. Men had been captured; others were in desperate need of surgical care. Yet the two great armies were less than a mile from each other. The challenge of disengagement was extraordinary—the roads to safety seemingly unreachable. The Retreat from Gettysburg has long been overshadowed by the battle that precipitated it, and yet it is one of the most important case studies in leadership and logistics and the principles of war that can be constructed. What is more challenging than leadership in the face of abject adversity? Yet Lee survived and lived to fight for nearly two more years and Meade continued to pursue the destruction of Lee’s army until Grant arrived nine months later to bring on the penultimate campaign of this bloody conflict. There are very few groups that study the retreat from Gettysburg. Indeed, there are only a handful of experts on the subject and two have recently died. Only John Schildt and Kent Masterson Brown remain. Indeed, it is Brown who has given us the most exhaustive and informative narrative of the days of retreat.

    Monterey Pass Battlefield Park Monterey Pass Battlefield www.montereypassbattlefield.org Self Guided Drivingw Tour The Battle of Monterey Pass driving tour takes approximately two and a half hours to complete. The tour covers some of the most rugged mountain roads in the Monterey Pass area. Please use caution when traveling on the roads, and please respect the private properties of those who live on the battlefield. Monterey Pass Battlefield Park is a trash free park. The tour will begin at the Fountaindale Fire Department following the route of the Union cavalry. From the museum, turn right onto RT16 and turn right onto Charmian Road (Old Waynesboro Road on the Adams County side) and proceed down to the mountain until you reach the fire department on your right. Stop 1, Fountaindale Fire Department: Two interpretive panels are located on the site. Located in the Fountaindale Fire Department’s parking lot you will see the Fountaindale skirmish marker and a Monterey Pass Battlefield marker. This is not the site of the June 28, 1863 skirmish, but it is the site of where Union General Judson Kilpatrick ran into a few of Captain George Emack’s pickets. They were quickly overran and retired up the mountain to Monterey. As you travel up the mountain on Old Waynesboro Road, General Kilpatrick describes the road conditions his cavalry experienced. On his right was Monterey Peak which was a rough, rugged portion of Monterey Pass. To the left was a steep ravine and to his front was a road so narrow that he couldn’t even deploy his artillery.

    Monterey Pass Battlefield Park A Midnight Battle along the Mason Dixon Line www.montereypassbattlefield.org The Battle of Monterey Pass w During the early morning hours of July 4, 1863, Confederate Major General Robert E. Lee ordered the withdraw of his Confederate Army from Gettysburg. General Lee had decided to use Monterey Pass as the main route for the retreat. Monterey Pass was the shortest and most direct route from Gettysburg, PA to Williamsport, MD, for access to the Potomac River. The first to leave Pennsylvania were the wagons trains. At Monterey Pass, the reserve wagon train under the command of Major John Harman was the first to move. Following behind was the wagon train of General Richard Ewell’s Corps. A portion of a wagon train belonging to General A. P. Hill’s Corps was bringing up the rear. A total of about fifty miles worth of wagons would travel through Monterey Pass. During the same afternoon, seven miles to the east of Monterey Pass at Emmitsburg, Maryland, Union General Judson Kilpatrick's cavalry division came into town. Kilpatrick’s cavalry division was ordered to locate, harass, and block the avenue of retreat at South Mountain. By 3:00 p.m., Kilpatrick’s cavalry, consisting of 5,000 mounted soldiers and sixteen pieces of rifled artillery, left Emmitsburg and headed toward the mountain. Union General Judson Kilpatrick Toward evening, at Fountaindale, Charles H. Buhrman, a local farmer, learned of the Confederate retreat at Monterey Pass, as well as the capture of several local citizens. He mounted his horse and traveled toward Emmitsburg looking for Federal soldiers in area.
