Little, Chair The manifestation of a public “gay identity” at Stonewall has made possible the emergence of an openly gay literary tradition that continues to the present day. When viewed collectively, contemporary gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered writers exhibit extraordinary range in their choices of subject matter, form, and theme, yet critics have tended to categorize gay domestic narratives, particularly those written by “white,” “middle-class” men, as participating in a cultural project that promotes normativity through its representation of gay subjects as “assimilative” and “sexless.” In other words, these critics regard authors who concern ii themselves with the homespace and with familial relationality as participating in a cultural project that makes “gay identity” palatable for straight readers, thereby rendering a more transgressive “queer” subjecthood virtually invisible. By examining the literary blueprints for queer homespaces that have been drawn up by several contemporary American male writers, this dissertation project aims to counter the assumption that a privileging of “gay” homelife necessarily results in an assimilative loss of queer-ness and sociopolitical potential. In reading Christopher Isherwood’s A Single Man (1964), Robert Ferro’s The Family of Max Desir (1983), Samuel R. Delany’s The Mad Man (1994), and Michael Cunningham’s A Home at the End of the World (1990) through the lenses of architectural studies, queer and feminist theories, poststructuralism, and affect theory, I seek to recover the queer homespace as an unsettled and disruptive site in which heteronormativity is challenged and the obscured connections among domestic practice, social oppression, and queer resistance are revealed. In so doing, I seek to expand notions of both queer literary identities and the material sites from which queer resistance has been and might be waged. iii The dissertation of David Michael Chase is approved. Drawing on post-structuralist theory, queer theorists sought to explore the processes by which medicalized categories of sexual deviance—where sexual deviance was measured in relation to a wide range of non-reproductive sexual practices—became taken as embodied forms of social and cultural identity. Over time, the scope of queer theory has expanded, such that it now represents a broad range of methodologies by which a host of norms are interrogated and named. Post-queer theory, as such, has left behind its moorings in lesbian and gay studies, to become a mechanism of critique where by theorists explore the sociality of sex, and the sexuality of the social. This course will expose students to a range of works in queer and post-queer theory as part of a larger exploration of methodologies in literary and cultural studies.     The Violet Quill Club: Constructing a Post-Stonewall Gay Identity through Fiction Brian Trimboli Senior Honors Thesis Spring 2016 Advisor: Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies Kristina Straub Trimboli 2 Abstract It‘s difficult to define ―literature,‖ let alone ―gay literature.‖ Nonetheless, a group of seven gay male authors, dubbed the Violet Quill Club, met at informal roundtables in New York City to critique each other‘s work in the late 1970s into the early ‘80s, creating a set of works that redefined the way Americans read ―gay‖ novels. These authors published their seminal works during this time, a unique era of sexual freedom in the United States that fell between the Stonewall riots, which mark the beginning of the modern gay rights movement, and the AIDS crisis, which took the lives of four members of the group. The fiction published by the Violet Quill Club established a new gay identity born of New York‘s gay culture, which emphasized sexual liberation and freedom from traditional heterosexual institutions such as marriage. Although this constructed identity was narrowly construed, it influenced a generation of gay men and still resonates within today‘s LGBT rights movement.     Our History Felice Picano Eric Andrews-Katz Felice Picano is one of the premier forces of the American years. I met Edmund White in Greenwich Village in 1976, gay literary movement. He has authored over twenty-five and George Whitmore in ’77. Chris Cox was Edmund’s books of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and plays. We're here today to talk about Isherwood's reception and history of publication in the US, as well as what we mean by the title Isherwood in Transit, which is open to interpretation and refers to the ​ ​ writer's movement on a personal and spiritual level as much as geographic. Here we have book editors Jim Berg and Chris Freeman, who have co-edited several volumes on Isherwood, including The Isherwood Century and The American Isherwood. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ Berg is associate dean of faculty at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York City. Freeman is professor of English and gender studies at the ​ ​ University of Southern California. They are joined by University of Minnesota press ​ ​ director Doug Armato.
