Wigs on the Green is a comic novel—albeit one that focuses on the rise of fascism in Britain, with an underlying awareness of the dangers it presented— but the exchange includes some of the dark rhetoric that was becoming common in the thirties. ―I am inclined to think that the Western civilization we know needs putting out of its agony as soon as possible. It is old and tired, the dark ages are practically upon us anyhow, and I should prefer that they march in with trumpet and flag than that they should creep upon us to the tap of the typewriter. I am at heart, I suppose, a Nihilist.‖ ―I don‘t know what that is,‖ said Poppy. ―No! But then you are a girl with a very limited outlook, aren‘t you?‖ ―I‘m not.‖ ―Oh! yes, you are. Like most women you only care about personalities, things don‘t interest you.‖ ―That‘s simply not true. I‘m fearfully interested in things—I absolutely long for a sable coat.‖ (98–99) Jasper‘s millenarian invocations of the death of Western civilization and the coming of the dark ages were echoed by many from all over the political spectrum in interwar Britain. The scars of the First World War were still visible, and the late twenties and thirties saw the publication of several memoirs of that conflict (including Robert Graves‘s Goodbye to All That, published in 1929, and Vera Brittain‘s Testament of Youth, which 1 2 came out in 1933). Despite the lingering awareness of the horrors of that war and the resulting efforts of many people to promote peace, commentators throughout the thirties—even very early in the decade—thought that another war was inevitable. In Keep the Aspidistra Flying, George Orwell‘s novel from the year after Wigs on the Green, Gordon Comstock thinks of ―the great death-wish of the modern world…Enemy aeroplanes flying over London, the deep threatening hum of the propellers, the shattering thunder of the bombs‖ (24). The historian G. N. Clark mused, in 1932, that the ―commonest phrases we hear used about civilization at the present time all relate to the possibility, or even the prospect, of its being destroyed‖ (qtd. in Overy 15). Like Mitford‘s Jasper Aspect, many reacted to the bleak outlook of the times by affiliating themselves with a political or religious ideology, even an extreme one. Young writers such as Orwell, W. H. Auden, and Naomi Mitchison were eager to make their political positions a major part of their writing—a tendency that Virginia Woolf, speaking for a slightly older generation, criticized in her essay ―The Leaning Tower.‖ Several other figures, including Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene, went through religious conversions in the late twenties or early thirties.1 Yet Poppy‘s flippant response to Jasper‘s references to political ideologies—to focus on things, like coats—was, as I will argue, also a common (and not always flippant) response to the atmosphere of dread and tumult. While Mitford presents Poppy‘s longing for a sable coat comically, numerous British novels of the thirties feature people who respond to the growing political and 1 See Peter McDonald‘s essay ―Believing in the Thirties‖ for more examples of the importance of belief in a political or religious ideology during the 1930s. 3 social uncertainty of the times by focusing on material things that seem solid, permanent, and far removed from the realm of human affairs. This dissertation analyzes the appeal of things in interwar British literature (and particularly in the literature of those thirties writers often referred to as ―late modernists‖—a term I will discuss shortly). In exploring these thirties writers‘ attraction to the material world, I draw on the recent ―turn toward things‖ in literary criticism and some other academic disciplines. Like others who have analyzed thoughts about things in various time periods, cultures, and literary genres, I attempt to capture thirties British writers‘ complex fascination with material things. Therefore, I show that despite this frequent appeal to the material world as a place of stability and comfort, many of these writers also recognized conflicting aspects of things, knowing (and fearing) that even seemingly impenetrable things could change as the world was changing around them. Yet although furnishings such as tables and chairs could warp, decay, become lost, or perish in the bombs of war, their ultimate remoteness from human society made them appealing and seemingly safe from the traumatic political and cultural changes that seemed to be on their way. This focus on writers‘ representations of things marks a significant departure from existing criticism of thirties British fiction, which centers most frequently on the writers‘ and characters‘ ideological commitments. Samuel Hynes‘s landmark The Auden Generation (1979) noted the ―moral commitment and discipline‖ of a generation for whom ―writing became a mode of action‖ (13). More recent approaches to the work of the thirties writers echo and expand on this contention. Chris Hopkins, in his English Fiction in the 1930s: Language, Genre, History (2006), notes that much writing of the 4 time was characterized by ―an aesthetics or politics in which writing had to engage the actuality of history now‖ (78).

    CABARET AND ANTIFASCIST AESTHETICS Steven Belletto When Bob Fosse’s Cabaret debuted in 1972, critics and casual viewers alike noted that it was far from a conventional fi lm musical. “After ‘Cabaret,’ ” wrote Pauline Kael in the New Yorker , “it should be a while before per- formers once again climb hills singing or a chorus breaks into song on a hayride.” 1 One of the fi lm’s most striking features is indeed that all the music is diegetic—no one sings while taking a stroll in the rain, no one soliloquizes in rhyme. The musical numbers take place on stage in the Kit Kat Klub, which is itself located in a specifi c time and place (Berlin, 1931).2 Ambient music comes from phonographs or radios; and, in one important instance, a Hitler Youth stirs a beer-garden crowd with a propagandistic song. This directorial choice thus draws attention to the musical numbers as musical numbers in a way absent from conventional fi lm musicals, which depend on the audience’s willingness to overlook, say, why a gang mem- ber would sing his way through a street fi ght. 3 In Cabaret , by contrast, the songs announce themselves as aesthetic entities removed from—yet expli- cable by—daily life. As such, they demand attention as aesthetic objects. These musical numbers are not only commentaries on the lives of the var- ious characters, but also have a signifi cant relationship to the fi lm’s other abiding interest: the rise of fascism in the waning years of the Weimar Republic.

He is one of those unique authors whose gradual transformation from late adolescence to young and middle adulthood can be clearly observed since he portrays different stages of his life in fiction. His critically acclaimed novel A Single Man, which reflects “the afternoon of his life;” is a poetic portrayal of Isherwood’s confrontation with ageing and death anxiety. Written during the early 1960s, stormy relationship with his partner Don Bachardy, the fight against cancer of two of his close friends’ (Charles Laughton and Aldous Huxley) and his own health problems surely contributed the formation of A Single Man. The purpose of this study is to unveil how Isherwood’s midlife crisis nurtured his creativity in producing this work of fiction. From a theoretical point of view, this paper, draws from literary gerontology and ‘the Lifecourse Perspective’ which is a theoretical framework in social gerontology.

Next day, as Cliff is giving Ernst an English lesson, Sally arrives with all her luggage and moves in. Ernst comes to ask Cliff to collect something for him from Paris; he will pay well for the service. Cliff knows that this will involve smuggling currency, but agrees to go. Ernst's fee will be useful now that Cliff and Sally are to be married. Fraulein Schneider and her admirer, a Jewish greengrocer named Herr Schultz, also decide to become engaged and a celebration party is held in Herr Schultz shop. In the middle of the festivities Ernst arrives wearing a Nazi armband. Cliff realizes that his Paris errand was on behalf of the Nazi party and refuses Ernst's payment, but Sally accepts it.     The Matheson Trust Sankara's Doctrine of Maya Harry Oldmeadow Published in Asian Philosophy (Nottingham) 2:2, 1992 Abstract Like all monisms Vedanta posits a distinction between the relatively and the absolutely Real, and a theory of illusion to explain their paradoxical relationship. Sankara's resolution of the problem emerges from his discourse on the nature of maya which mediates the relationship of the world of empirical, manifold phenomena and the one Reality of Brahman. Their apparent separation is an illusory fissure deriving from ignorance and maintained by 'superimposition'. Maya, enigmatic from the relative viewpoint, is not inexplicable but only not self-explanatory. Sankara's exposition is in harmony with sapiential doctrines from other religious traditions and implies a profound spiritual therapy. * Maya is most strange. Her nature is inexplicable. (Sankara)i Brahman is real; the world is an illusory appearance; the so-called soul is Brahman itself, and no other. (Sankara)ii I The doctrine of maya occupies a pivotal position in Sankara's metaphysics. Before focusing on this doctrine it will perhaps be helpful to make clear Sankara's purposes in elaborating the Advaita Vedanta. Some of the misconceptions which have afflicted English commentaries on Sankara will thus be banished before they can cause any further mischief. Firstly, Sankara should not be understood or approached as a 'philosopher' in the modern Western sense. We're here today to talk about Isherwood's reception and history of publication in the US, as well as what we mean by the title Isherwood in Transit, which is open to interpretation and refers to the ​ ​ writer's movement on a personal and spiritual level as much as geographic. Here we have book editors Jim Berg and Chris Freeman, who have co-edited several volumes on Isherwood, including The Isherwood Century and The American Isherwood. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ Berg is associate dean of faculty at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York City. Freeman is professor of English and gender studies at the ​ ​ University of Southern California. They are joined by University of Minnesota press ​ ​ director Doug Armato.     Theory and Practice in English Studies Volume 8, No. 2, 2019 E-ISSN: 1805-0859 CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD’S CAMP Thomas Castañeda Abstract In this paper I consider recurrent themes in the work of Christopher Isherwood, a novelist best known for his portrayal of Berlin's seedy cabaret scene just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The themes I discuss each hinge on un- canny discrepancies between youth and old age, male and female, sacred and pro- fane, real and sham. Together, I argue, these themes indicate the author's invest- ment in a queer camp sensibility devoted to theatricality, ironic humor, and the supremacy of style. I focus on specific descriptions of characters, objects, and places throughout the author's work in order to foreground camp's rather exuber- ant interest in artifice, affectation, and excess, as well as its ability to apprehend beauty and worthiness even, or especially, in degraded objects, people, or places. Ultimately, I argue that the term camp, especially as it applies to Isherwood's work, names both a comedic style and a specifically queer empathetic mode rooted in shared histories of hurt, secrecy, and social marginalization. The novel centers around a bisexual widower named Stephen Monk, who flees his second marriage in Los Angeles to live with his “aunt” Sarah – a close family friend – in a small Quaker community outside Philadelphia.
