Support for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children The Sheffield Service for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children offers support from first diagnosis through to the end of school or FE college. Who are we? A team of teachers and teaching assistants with additional specialist qualifications in working with children with hearing impairment. Why might my child need extra support? Children with hearing loss need to learn to use their hearing aids and develop their listening skills. Hearing loss can affect a child’s language development and communication. Nurseries and schools may need to adapt their teaching approaches . What will we do? Support the children to use their hearing aids effectively Monitor their progress in communication and language Provide direct teaching for some children Support the children with their social and emotional wellbeing Provide training and advice to your child’s early years setting or school. Provide a radio aid to those children who will benefit Work collaboratively with other professionals, e.g. Hearing Services at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Speech and Language Therapy What support will my child get? Support is provided by qualified Teachers of the Deaf, who will visit your child at home, at nursery or at school. The support level is matched to your child’s needs, using the National Sensory Impaired Partnership (NATSIP) support eligibility framework: 1. One-off visit and advice given to school or nursery 2. An annual visit to make sure your child is progressing well, and to give advice and training. 3. Regular visits - once or twice a term – to monitor progress 4. Regular teaching support 5. Integrated Resource Provision (see below) (For further details see the Sheffield Support Grid) You will also receive an annual written report from the Teacher of the Deaf. Integrated Resource Provision Most children with hearing impairment will attend their local school, with visiting support from the Service. Some children, requiring a high level of support, will attend a mainstream school with Integrated Resource Provision. This provides: • Specialist staff based in the school • Somewhere quiet for the children to spend some time working • Language and literacy sessions one-to-one or small group • Support in-class for lessons, as needed • The opportunity to mix with other Deaf/hearing impaired children Schools with Integrated Resource Provision: • Angram Bank Primary School • Greystones Primary School • Lower Meadow Primary School • Ecclesfield School • High Storrs School • Silverdale School Children need to have an Education, Health and Care Plan to access a place in an Integrated Resource. Referrals to the Service Most children are referred to the Service by Hearing Services, Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Some are referred by nurseries, schools or parent/carers.
