The Editors PREFACE The International Conference on Sanskrit and Related Studies to Commemorate the Centenary of the Birth of Stanis³aw Schayer (8.05.1899–1.12.1941), held at Warsaw University, between October 7–10, 1999, was one of the major events in the history of Oriental Studies in Warsaw. The year 1999 was specifically chosen by the organisers in order to commemorate the person and scholarly oeuvre of Stanis³aw Schayer, the eminent Polish Sanskritist and Buddhologist, the founder of the Oriental Institute of Warsaw University. Under his guidance, the Oriental Institute in Warsaw soon became a centre of advanced studies on Buddhism, and it was not long before such scholars as Ludwik Skurzak, Arnold Kunst and Constantin Regamey graduated from it. It was likewise Schayer who introduced the study of modern Indian languages (e.g. Hindi, Bengali) to the Department of Indology and was the founder and editor of Polski Biuletyn Orientalistyczny (the Polish Bulletin of Oriental Studies). The tradition of Indian studies initiated by Stanis³aw Schayer is now being continued at the Department of South Asian Studies, where both classical and modern languages (Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil) are studied. Studia Indologiczne (Journal of Indological Studies) has been published annually since 1994, and the Section of Buddhist Studies was subsequently established in 1997. The motto of the Conference ‘On the Understanding of Other Cultures’ was borrowed from the title of Stanis³aw Schayer’s last paper, published initially in Polish in 1939 and translated into English in 1999 specially for the occasion of the Conference. The motto aptly delineates the character of the Conference and its scientific objectives. To justify the title of the International Conference on Sanskrit and Related Studies, merely Sanskrit is mentioned there explicitly in accordance with the maxim: EkÂâsâMbâiNzâdâœarâne'NysâMbâiNzâSmâòâÒaâmµ . Accordingly, it is supposed to be merely a reminder that it is but one of a broad spectre of languages which are instrumental for a scholar in gaining an insight into normative assumptions and cultural heterogeneity of Indian society. Related Studies represented at the Conference comprise all the disciplines that are vital to the understanding of the profusion of approaches to reality in India, and incorporate the study of ancient and modern philosophy, literature, religiosity, rationalistic attitudes, axiology, intercultural exchange of ideas, language as communicative groundwork, concepts of personality and society, etc. The importance of Indian and Oriental studies—stated jointly, in keeping with the maxim of ‘the cattle and bulls’: gobâlîvâdrâNyay: —has become more fundamental, in 10

This person-centered style of religious authority is implicit in the teachings and identity of the scriptural sources of the Kulam!rga, a complex of traditions that developed out of more esoteric branches of tantric "aivism. For convenience sake, we name this model of religious authority a “Kaula idiom.” The Kaula idiom is contrasted with a highly influential notion of revelation as eternal and authorless, advanced by orthodox interpreters of the Veda, and other Indian traditions that invested the words of sages and seers with great authority.

Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) Dr. Prabhakar Machwe (1917-1991) Prolific writer, linguist and an authority on Indian literature, Dr. Prabhakar Machwe was born on 26 December 1917 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He graduated from Vikram University, Ujjain and obtained Masters in Philosophy, 1937, and English Literature, 1945, Agra University; Sahitya Ratna and Ph.D, Agra University, 1957. Dr. Machwe started his career as a lecturer in Madhav College, Ujjain, 1938-48. He worked as Literary Producer, All India Radio, Nagpur, Allahabad and New Delhi, 1948-54. He was closely associated with Sahitya Akademi from its inception in 1954 and served as Assistant Secretary, 1954-70, and Secretary, 1970-75. Dr. Machwe was Visiting Professor in Indian Studies Departments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California on a Fulbright and Rockefeller grant (1959-1961); and later Officer on Special Duty (Language) in Union Public Service Commission, 1964-66. After retiring from Sahitya Akademi in 1975, Dr. Machwe was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla, 1976-77, and Director of Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Calcutta, 1979-85. He spent the last years of his life in Indore as Chief Editor of a Hindi daily, Choutha Sansar, 1988-91. Dr. Prabhakar Machwe travelled widely for lecture tours to Germany, Russia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Japan and Thailand. He organised national and international seminars on the occasion of the birth centenaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo between 1961 and 1972.

    After Miłosz: Polish Poetry In the 20th and the 21th Century Chicago, Chopin Theatre, 9/30 –10/3 2011 THE FESTIVAL The Chicago's literary festival titled After Milosz: Polish Poetry in the 20th and 21th Century is the largest presentation of Polish poetry in the United States this year. The festival celebrates the year of Czeslaw Milosz and commemorates the centennial anniversary of the birth of the Nobel Prize winner. The event goes beyond a familiar formula of commenting the work of the poet and offers a broader view on the contemporary Polish poetry. Besides the academic conference dedicated to Milosz's work, and a panel with the greatest America poets (Jorie Graham, Charles Simic) remembering the artist and discussing his influence on American poetry, the program includes readings of the most talented modern Polish poets of three generations. From the best known (Zagajewski, Sommer) to the most often awarded young writer nowadays, Justyna Bargielska. An important part of the festival will be two concerts: the opening show will present the best Polish rappers FISZ and EMADE whose songs are inspired by Polish poetry; another concert will present one of the best jazz singers in the world, Patricia Barber, who will perform especially for this occasion. The main organizers of the festival are the Fundation of Tygodnik Powszechny magazine and the Joseph Conrad International Literary Festival in Krakow, for which the Chicago festival is a portion of the larger international project for promoting Polish literature abroad. The co- organizer of the festival is the Head of the Slavic Department at University of Illinois at Chicago, Professor Michal Pawel Markowski, who represents also the Polish Interdisciplinary Program at UIC supported by The Hejna Fund, and also serves as the artistic director to the Conrad Festival.

Hutchens Turlington Hall 2341 Tuesdays: 3-4:55 Thursdays: 4:05-4:55 Poland Through Movies is an introductory survey of more than one thousand years of Polish history, illustrated on film. Poland’s contribution to world cinema has been immense. This class offers an examination of the chief currents of modern Polish film, including, but not limited to, the cinema of “the Polish School” of the 1950s and 60s, the works of experimental and avant- garde auteurs, satires and parodies of the late-socialist period, historical “great canvas” films, as well as more recent work that addresses the dramas, desires, and discontents of political transition and the realities of post-communist society. We will discuss the ways Polish filmmakers have represented Polish history, and how they have “read” history through their work. We will consider Polish cinema within the context of both Western European film and film production in the Soviet Bloc. A main focus will be on the oeuvre of Poland’s most recognized and prodigious filmmakers, including Wajda, Kieslowski, Ford, Polanski, Holland, Zanussi, and Hoffman, as well as on the work of “Wajda’s children” – the newest generation of filmmakers. XVII (2015) 10.12797/CIS.17.2015.17.04 Nicola Pozza [email protected] (University of Lausanne, Switzerland) Wandering Writers in the Himalaya: Contesting Narratives and Renunciation in Modern Hindi Literature Summary: The Himalayan setting—especially present-day Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand—has fascinated many a writer in India. Journeys, wanderings, and sojourns in the Himalaya by Hindi authors have resulted in many travelogues, as well as in some emblematic short stories of modern Hindi literature. If the environment of the Himalaya and its hill stations has inspired the plot of several fictional writ- ings, the description of the life and traditions of its inhabitants has not been the main focus of these stories. Rather, the Himalayan setting has primarily been used as a nar- rative device to explore and contest the relationship between the mountain world and the intrusive presence of the external world (primarily British colonialism, but also patriarchal Hindu society). Moreover, and despite the anti-conformist approach of the writers selected for this paper (Agyeya, Mohan Rakesh, Nirmal Verma and Krishna Sobti), what mainly emerges from an analysis of their stories is that the Himalayan setting, no matter the way it is described, remains first and foremost a lasting topos for renunciation and liberation.
