PASSO STAULANZA – FOOTSTEPS OF THE DINOSAURS PASSO STAULANZA – IMPRONTE DEI DINOSAURI

Theme: Nature and History Kind of outdoor activity: Trekking Emotional attractions: Discovering the footsteps of the dinosaurs Target: Hikers and Families

Tour Data Distance 5,400 km Ascent 275 m Descent 221 m Duration 2:00 h Difficulty moderate Link to the itinerary Best time of year from April to October http://out.ac/dgkl4

Starting point/trailhead: Top of Staulanza Pass Coordinates: Geogr.46.4230556,12.1030556

A pleasant and non-binding excursion that offers the chance to see the footsteps of the dinosaurs, discovered by Vittorino Cazzetta, a local man of few words but a great passion for mountain and solitary wanderings to the discovery of traces of the past and just on the mountain during one of his lonely excursion he lost his life still young. Already in 1970 he had identified the footprints of dinosaurs dated 220 milion years ago on a boulder detached from Pelmetto. A lot of time goes by still before he decides to talk to someone about this discovery. Now they still are at the time the first findings with these characteristics in . From Staulanza pass, take the path n. 472 which runs through the wood along Monte Pelmetto and leads to cross the path that goes up to the rock. The latter is slippery in some sections due to the dirt and gravel ground. From the bottom it is already possible to see the boulder and climbing up towards the wall of Mount Pelmetto, you reach the place of discovery. Here you can see three distinct dinosaur tracks from the Triassic period. This excursion is easy and suitable for the whole family and it is complementary to the visit of the Vittorino Cazzetta museum, in , which with its exhibition rooms, guides the visitor to the geological history of the valley: it offers a synthesis, starting from prehistory, of the Val Fiorentina, showing the geological conformation of the and guards the skeleton of the “Man of Mondeval”, in an intact Mesolithic sepulcher, with a rich funeral equipment, another sensational discovery in 1987 by Vittorino Cazzetta. Valmo, as this Mesolitic man was called, dates back to 7500 years ago and it is the main character of the museum which every year welcomes lots of young students, families and scientists who want to discover more about this ancient valley. Who knows how many other witnesses of the past the land here keeps still undiscovered.

Tour Data Distance 2 km Ascent 174 m Descent 174 m Duration 1:00h Difficulty easy Link to the itinerary Best time of year from April to October http://out.ac/dgkGE

Starting point/trailhead: Masarè – Central square Coordinates: Geogr.46.3974562,12.0118957

Easy walk, suitable for families and people without particular physical preparation. It starts from the central square of Masarè di Alleghe, on the shore of the Lake of Alleghe whose origins date back to 1771 when a part of Monte Piz collapsed, creating a huge landslide that blocked the Cordevole river as it flowed down the valley creating a natural basin. A second minor landslide occurred in May of the same year collapsing in the newly formed lake and causing a wave that rose in the direction of the valley of the Zunaia stream. It reached the village of Alleghe destroying the rectory, part of the church and a number of houses. Legend has it that the church bell tower collapsed completely, swept away by the enormous wave and the bells dissapeared into the deep of the lake. According to the legend, you can still catch a glimpse of the tip of the submerged bell tower on certains days when the waters are particularly clear. The walk towards the waterfall climbs up to the tennis court at Piàn Grant, and then turns right onto a path that leads to a water intake. Here proceed to the left, always slightly uphill to a short flat stretch that leads to a wooden bridge, that should not be crossed; instead continue straight in the direction of the water jump. In a few minutes you reach the Ru de Rialt Waterfall, announced by the rush of water and preceded by the refreshing fall of the nebulized droplets. Return back to the same path. This escursion is ideal for children or people who want to approach the world of trekking in a simple way, or who just need a short and restoring break from the stress of the everyday life.

THE KINGDOM OF CHAMOIS IL REGNO DEI CAMOSCI

Theme: Nature and Landscape Emotional attractions: Discovering the wild nature Kind of outdoor activity: Trekking Target: Hikers and Families

Tour Data Distance 10,9 km Ascent 985 m Descent 985 m Duration 5:50 h Difficulty moderate/difficult Link to the itinerary Best time of year from April to October http://out.ac/dgsmB

Starting point/trailhead: – hamlet of Toffol Coordinates: Geogr. 46.450377,12.059689 Loop

From the hamlet of Toffol, where it is possible to park the car, go up through the characteristic houses and cottages (CAI trail sign No. 465 at the corner of a barn). Here the municipal road becomes a grassy cart. A few meters after being forwarded, turn right near an aqueduct storage tank to cross the Loschiesuoi stream. You reach a pleasant clearing which, turning on the left, goes up the valley to enter into the beautiful forest of firs, where the sheep track becomes a marked trail. With a good incline, follow the evocative wild valley of the Loschiesuoi stream, accompanied by the murmur of its clear waters. Leaving the woods, after just over an hour's walk and crossing the stream “delle Baste”, you climb a grassy slope that, after the curious particular slit called "Sass Strenc" reaches a junction with clear signals: you leave here the path 465 which continues under the slopes of the Cernera group, and turns right to the nearby Ponte di Sasso and then to the Piz del Corvo. The place is so beautiful that it is worth stopping to admire the particular architecture that has formed naturally over the river and, in summer, for the richness of alpine flora that colors the surrounding prairies. After crossing the natural bridge you reach a pleasant wide basin, this area is not very popular among the tourists so it is the ideal habitat where the chamois live: it is advisable to have binoculars and a camera so you can admire these magnificent animals. The path is marked by red stamps and passes by channeling to the right and circumscribing the slopes of Piz del Corvo. Opposite the lava walls of Corvo Alto and above the Lastoi di Formin wall stand out. At the top of the grass saddle appear the overwhelming Pelmo and the Civetta. Here a wooden table indicates to the right the last steep climb to reach the top of the Piz del Corvo (cross and peak book) from where you can admire a 360 ° panorama of the Dolomites. Return to the saddle, follow the signs on the right of the wooden poles with a red tip, along the entire prairie to reach the marked ruins of Casera Vallazza. Continue downhill, crossing a stream that forms the Sacuz stream, to always follow the beautiful red poles until you reach the underlying CAI path n. 466 near the Cordon stream. Go along it, going down to the right to the valley of Mondeval di Sotto. This leads to the asphalted wood road that reaches the village of Toffol. This itineray is a bit difficult and long if you're not used to long excursions, but at the end of the day when you are back at home, you'll feel slightly tired but completely regenerated. The vision of a chamois in his natural unspoiled habitat is very frequent here and it will be an experience for you and for your children that you'll never forget.

Starting point/trailhead: parking area Falzarego pass after village of Castello Coordinates: Geogr. 46.506171,11.997347

Follow the road to the Falzarego Pass and go through the village of Cernadoi. After some hairpin bends, leave the car on the left near the sign for the village of Castello, where there is a small parking area. Then follow the road and in about 15 minutes you will admire the Andraz Castle. This Castle stands on an erratic boulder coming from the Setsass, at about 1800 m asl. The first witnesses about the medieval building say that it was built about the year 1000, but it is thought that the original structure was even older. It stands on a overwhelming position where it was possible in the ancient times to watch down on the valley having the control on the traffic. During the centuries it was inhabited by many important people, but the most popular was undoubtedly the Bishop of Bressanone, Nicolò da Cusano. Visiting the castle you can still admire his tactics and rooms where he used to carry on his studies of astronomy. In the mid of the XIX century, the Castle was partially demolished, but today it can be admired throughout its beauty, because of its recent renovation. It is possible to have a guided visit to this beautiful location which is like a little pearl among the woods. In summer time many events are organized here, as workshops for children, lessons on falconry and many concerts of classical, medieval or folk music. In the castle it is also possible now to get married. The landscape here is marvelous especially in autumn with the colorful woods which surround the castle.

Starting point/trailhead: Rifugio Flora Alpina – San Pellegrino pass Coordinates: Geogr. 46.379897,11.828398 Loop

The Rifugio Flora Alpina is located in the valley of Valfredda, 2 km from the San Pellegrino Pass. Easily accessible by car, it is a well-known starting point for walks and hikes in the summer and pleasant ski mountaineering itineraries in winter. This valley is dotted with many little mountain huts called Casoni di Valfredda, small shelters of the shepherds, that have recently become suggestive huts for excursions in this natural paradise, lying on the green meadows enclosed in the splendid setting of the rocky cathedrals of the surrounding Dolomites. These typical mountain huts where once used by the inhabitants of the valleys underneath as shelter during the summer pastures, when they used to take cows or goats to high altitude or to go there to take care of their meadows. Nowadays these little shelters are used by the owners as “second houses” where they can spend their Sunday having fun with the family or to take a relaxing break from the stress and traffic of the every day life. The 18,96 km long path with a difference in height of 891 m is unknown to many and runs along the old dirt track that climbs up to the San Pellegrino Pass. Because of the often hostile bottom associated with steep slopes, it will sometimes force you to get off the mountain bike and keep pushing, but the peculiarity of the places and the feeling of having made it will be the predominant thoughts at the end of the lap and the final destination can undoubtedly reward for the effort made.

In 1548 a rule by the Serenissima Repubblica of Venezia imposed the total ban to utilize the forest for the necessities of the inhabitants of the surroundings which meant a ban from pasturing and utilizing the wood. The borders demarcation was done using huge immovable and inalienable rocks already existing in the land. From Sant'Anna or Tambre, to the Malghe and the Cansiglio woods to find the ancient boundary stones that Venice used for 250 years. There are more than 300 already detected around the forest and inside, 15 of these are in the municipal territory of Tambre and 6 have been joined by an ideal path to make you spend half a day immersed in nature and history. The route is of medium difficulty, just over 15 km long with a difference in height of 770 m and a journey time of about 5 hours. After the fall of Venice these rocks were abandoned for centuries to the weather conditions, today these witnesses set the idea of the power that once Venice had on the forest lands that was used as a resource for the necessities of the Arsenal. An ideal route among six of these rocks in the area of Tambre will let you spend half a day in a diverse and interesting path between history and nature.

You meet a typical ruin of the house with barn, the Alpago is famous for the Alpago sheep, so (attention) go down to the right valley (yellow stamps on the trees) for tracks a bit 'steep. You arrive at a stone bridge over a rock split. Further on there is another one on Spert's valley. The two bridges are known as Ponti Romani. Once you reach the asphalted road (bracca and cableway) you go down a stretch of asphalt and to a bridge you take the path on the left that quickly leads to the bottom of Buscole from where, shortly along the sidewalk, you return to the starting point.

The recommended route is quite varied. Although it passes across the towns of Pedavena and Feltre, it also crosses several areas of naturalistic interest. After reaching the Valley of Lamen, with road gradients sometimes challenging, you can admire the stunning Vette Feltrine, mountain group of the Belluno Dolomites National Park. Then, descending along dirt roads and following a path not very difficult, you will reach the Val di Faont and finally Pedavena, where the headquarter of the Dolomites National Park is located. The Park has been created to protect this territory and his exceptional landscape and naturalistic treasures. The Vette Feltrine were already very famous for their flora since the 18th century. The particular geographical location gave origin to rare species and an extraordinary variety of environments. The park territory is in fact located in very impervious areas on the limit of the southeast Alps, which have only partially been reached and modified by glaciations. Then itinerary continues till you reach the hamlet of Teven and then cross the new path that leads to the municipality of Feltre. The itinerary continues to the area of the Ice Rink, where the path ends for those who started their ride from Feltre. Last leg of the journey is the Arcobaleno Cooperative, home to the “Museum of Dreams, memory and cribs”. (55% dirt road, 15% single track, 30% asphalt).

Starting point/trailhead: Mel – central square Coordinates: Geogr. 46.0624074,12.0781786 Loop

The starting point of the route is the square of Mel from which you cross the portico that leads to a path. At the end of the trail, keeping the right in the direction of Foll, continue on the left on a car track and cross the asphalted road taking the path to Tiago, which leads to the ancient castle of Zumelle, that stands on the top of a hill overhanging the torrent Terche. The initial building was probably erected during the first century, when Romans where consolidating their influence in Valbelluna. It has been for a long time a military garrison of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate. It is the best preserved castle in Valbelluna. Then the route crosses characteristic villages, reaches the banks of the Piave and leads back to Mel. As evidenced by the interesting necropolis, Mel is a village of Paleo-Veneto origins. At the end of the 9th century a.C. an antique Veneto population coming up the river Piave choose this hill as place to stay. The evidence of their presence is given by the findings which are kept at the Archeological Museum, where also a milestone of Via Claudia Augusta Altinate is preserved. A splendid sixteenth-century square with its palaces of unmistakable Venetian imprint characterize this beautiful village, which has been included in the “ Association of the most beautiful villages of Italy” which has the aim of valorizing and promoting the great historic, artistic and cultural heritage of the Italian small centers.
