NAKANOSHIMA MUSEUM OF ART , OSAKA NAKANOSHIMA MUSEUM OF ART, OSAKA Nakanoshima 2021 A community alive with art. An Osaka shaped by art. The Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka describes four elements of its vision in keeping with the New Art Museum Development Policy drawn up in 2014. A world-class art museum attracting worldwide attention 1 We will provide collection galleries that bring out the best in the museum’s first-class collection, and one of the largest event galleries in the Kansai region, fully capable of hosting large-scale touring exhibitions. A progressive art museum with unprecedented originality 2 We will accommodate a wide range of activities for the new museum, such as offering arts immersion using the museum’s abundant collection and actively using the museum’s archives as a source of information. An exciting art museum leading the creation of a bustling and lively city 3 We will provide facilities where people of all ages can easily encounter and enjoy art, with attractive service establishments and open spaces that will transform way people see art museums. A productive art museum serving as a top-class public edifice well into the future 4 We aim to be an art museum with first-rate functionality that is easy to use for everyone—museum visitors, curators responsible for planning and managing exhibitions, businesses responsible for the managing and operating the facilities—well into the next generation. 01 Passage going through the building The passage is easily accessible to anyone and is a place where visiting people can feel at ease. It is a place where anyone, both people with and without interest in art museums, can come and find a place to be themselves. For people passing through as they move across the city of Osaka, it is a fluid space that can hold various activities— at times a space to immerse in art and at times a hub for art-based activities. It is also a space that fuses the interior to the exterior of the building. As a place destined to be the face of the new museum, we called for proposals in a design competition, for the passage to be a bustling and open indoor space that can be easily and freely accessible, not just to museum visitors but to people of all ages. The best proposal that was chosen proffered "an art museum like a metropolis where a variety of people and activities intersect." The new art museum’s passage is a three-dimensional space comprising an atrium five stories high, which acts as the building’s spine and drenches the building with soft light from the ceiling.
