Without guidance, this is usually impossible. Therefore, lowe my biggest thanks to Peter and Laura Yorke of Ra Horakhty Temple, who provided my first exposure to self-initiation techniques in the Golden Dawn. Their years of expe rience with the Golden Dawn material yielded a structure of carefully selected ex ercises, which their students still use today to bring about a gradual transformation. WIthout such well-prescribed use of the Golden Dawn's techniques, it would have been difficult to make progress in its grade system. The basic structure of the course in this book is built on a foundation of the Golden Dawn's elemental grade system as my teachers passed it on. In particular, it develops further their choice to use the color correspondences of the Four Worlds, a piece of the original Golden Dawn system that very few occultists have recognized as an ini tiatory tool. -

This is a result of the simple fact that our knowledge of the practice of Mesopotamian magic is channeled mainly through the medium of text. 2 Assuming a written representation serves as a record of an existing ritual practice, it must be approached as a selective account of specific aspects of a ritual, which were deemed necessary to be written down, in a specific time, place and context.3 In addition, we cannot assume that a ritual text4 or written recitation merely records a practice which existed before it was written down; the action or recitation may have been composed initially in writing, by means of a combination of observation and writing, or with reference to an oral tradition. Following the initial writing of an incantation or ritual text, the composition represented by the text may have been transmitted in writing and/or orally. Similarly, the composition may have been performed with a full or partial reference to a text, a version of it, or as a purely or partially oral tradition. -

Both slumbering and waking we can find ourselves feeling a bit adrift during this time of year. The sun is getting a little higher in the sky…we think. We look, we watch the clock, we try to notice those little changes. And maybe we do, but we still don’t see anything “big” happening. Imbolc, meaning “in the belly” or “ewe’s milk,” is a time when life begins to return in the sullen darkness of winter that lingers. To our ancestors it was a glimmer of hope that all wasn’t lost and warm days of abundance would return soon. Today it’s a glimmer of hope that the Pink Drink might be on sale at Starbucks and that soon the beaches will be open a little later in the evening. Times have changed a lot since our ancestors marked the seasons. Today it’s more appropriate to honor this time as a point for inner growth. We can take that inward vibe of winter and combine it with the stirring growth vibe of spring and merge them at this midpoint to reconnect to our passion, our purpose, and our fire. Because that’s what Imbolc is all about! It’s a celebration of the Goddess Brigid who is the Celtic goddess of smithery, poetry, craftsmanship, midwifery, and creation. -

This is Doris Malkmus interviewing Ruth Barrett on November 28, 2004, at her home in Evansville, Wisconsin. Ruth, I am so glad that you agreed to interview with us and to allow us to use this material on the LGBT Religious Archive Network website and oral history project. I’m wondering if you could begin by giving us some background about yourself. Where were you born and raised, and when were you born? Ruth B. I was born in 1954 in Los Angeles. Actually, second generation Angelina. And lived pretty much most of my life in California until relocating to the Midwest in 2000. So my family was very involved in . were some of the first founding families in the Reconstructionist movement of Judaism, which is a fourth branch of Judaism—you know, Orthodox, Conservative, Reformed, and then Reconstructionism. Now there’s also Renewal, and there’s other movements. But Reconstructionism plays actually a big part in my personal development spiritually, as well as having, setting a context for me to later understand the evolution of Goddess religion and spirituality. Because a Reconstructionist perspective, as it applies to Judaism, is a way of understanding the Jewish people as they move through time. And that we constantly have to look at the customs and the traditions and practices and philosophies and make them relevant to the time that we’re living. So we’re talking about Judaism as an evolving religious civilization. -

Publisher Mago Books Download date 25/09/2021 14:21:48 Link to Item http://hdl.handle.net/10545/622746 Chapter 20 Wicca, Witchcraft and the Goddess Revival: An examination of the growth of Wicca in post-war America Caroline Ball Preface When dealing with a topic as unfamiliar as Wicca is to many, it seems important before progressing further to establish just what is meant by the terms ‘pagan’, ‘neopagan’, ‘witch’ and ‘Wiccan’, both to scholars and those to whom the terms apply. There is a great deal of debate concerning this matter, which does not look to be reconciled any time soon, and many, scholars included, are wont to use these terms interchangeably. It does not help that in many cases there is no single specific definition accepted by both groups, as in the case of Wicca; or that the official dictionary definition is outdated and reflects a quite clearly Christian bias. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary defines a ‘pagan’ as “heathen; unenlightened or irreligious”. One can see immediately how offensive, not to mention inaccurate, such a description would seem to pagans, who are neither unenlightened nor irreligious. In general, one must look at the context in which the word is used to determine its meaning. -

Magic in Practice
MAGIC IN PRACTICE 1 THE BASICS OF MAGIC WHAT IS MAGIC? Magic is the art of producing a desired effect through the use of spells and rituals. The true nature of magic – whether it’s the result of a “universal sympathy,” a collaborative effort by various deities, or something else altogether – is not fully understood. According to Sir James George Frazer (1858-1941), a social anthropologist whose work focused on mythology and comparative religion, magic relies on two basic principles: Principle of Similarity – Also known as “association of ideas,” this principle asserts that causality is inferred where it might not otherwise have been. In magic, herbs and reagents are ordered in categories based on their traditional association with celestial bodies in our solar system. During rituals, these herbs are burned to corroborate the intentions of the magician; for example, a magician attempting to cast a love charm would burn herbs and reagents associated with Venus on a Friday. This logic relies on the causal inference that Venus, roses, and Fridays are associated with love acquisition. It is also associated with karma and karmic retribution. Principle of Contagion – This principle asserts that objects that come in contact with one another will continue to influence each other even after the contact is broken. In magic, every object and action is said to generate magical energies, which can be absorbed and released. This process occurs whether the participants are aware of it or not; magicians, in being mindful of it, can manipulate this curiosity of energy dispersal to project their will. It is also associated with magic circles and enchanted items.
