CIFORB Country Profile – Bangladesh Demographics • Obtained independence from Pakistan (East Pakistan) in 1971 following a nine month civil uprising • Bangladesh is bordered by India and Myanmar. • It is the third most populous Muslim-majority country in the world. • Population: 168,957,745 (July 2015 est.) • Capital: Dhaka, which has a population of over 15 million people. • Bangladesh's government recognises 27 ethnic groups under the 2010 Cultural Institution for Small Anthropological Groups Act. • Bangladesh has eight divisions: Barisal, Chittagong, Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet (responsible for administrative decisions). • Language: Bangla 98.8% (official, also known as Bengali), other 1.2% (2011 est.). • Religious Demographics: Muslim 89.1% (majority is Sunni Muslim), Hindu 10%, other 0.9% (includes Buddhist, Christian) (2013 est.). • Christians account for approximately 0.3% of the total population, and they are mostly based in urban areas. Roman Catholicism is predominant among the Bengali Christians, while the remaining few are mostly Protestants. • Most of the followers of Buddhism in Bangladesh live in the Chittagong division. • Bengali and ethnic minority Christians live in communities across the country, with relatively high concentrations in Barisal City, Gournadi in Barisal district, Baniarchar in Gopalganj, Monipuripara and Christianpara in Dhaka, Nagori in Gazipur, and Khulna City. • The largest noncitizen population in Bangladesh, the Rohingya, practices Islam. Mashiur R Akan 2006 WASPA Asia Project Report 2 This report in one in a series of project reports written by the Wastewater Agriculture and Sanitation for Poverty Alleviation in Asia (WASPA Asia) project. The WASPA Asia project aims to develop and test solutions for sanitation and wastewater management, to reduce the risks form wastewater use in agriculture. The approach involves the development of stakeholder coalitions at town and national level, called Learning Alliances, which will bring together the main stakeholders into a participatory process through which actions will be planned and implemented in a sustainable manner. These project reports are essentially internal documents intended to inform the future activities of the project, particularly in relation to the development of Learning Alliances and participatory action plans. The reports have been made publicly available as some of the information and findings presented in them may be of use to other researchers, practitioners or government officials. The WASPA Asia project is funded primarily under the EU Asia Pro Eco II Programme of the European Commission. It is being undertaken by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Sri Lanka; COSI, Sri Lanka; the International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC), the Netherlands; NGO Forum for Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation, Bangladesh; and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Sweden. Baten Department of Environmental Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202 Abstract An agro-climatic study was conducted at three regions of Rajshahi division with 50 (1961-2010) years of climatic data (temperature, rainfall, relative humidity and sunshine) to observe the climatic variability. The annual average temperature was showed decreasing trends over Rajshahi, Rangpur and Dinajpur regions by 0.0134, 0.0262 and 0.01180C/year. Annual average rainfall showed increasing trends over Rangpur and Dinajpur region by 14.971, 18.673mm/year and decreasing trends over Rajshahi region by 3.0698mm/year. Average relative humidity was showed increasing trends over Rajshahi, and Dinajpur region by 0.0261, and 0.0269%/year. Over Rangpur region, the decreasing trend was observed by 0.0599%/year. Decreasing trends of sunshine were observed for all regions. Distributions of regional average of climate factors in the study area were observed TRangpur> TRajshahi> TDinajpur, RRangpur> RDinajpur> RRajshahi, RHRangpur> RHDinajpur> RHRajshahi and SDinajpur> SRajshahi> SRangpur for temperature, rainfall, relative humidity and sunshine, respectively. This paper aims to contest some of these dominant/official narratives which have been discursively constructed and promoted by the secularist parties (including the ruling regime) and groups in Bangladesh over recent years. Examining the sociopolitical and historical facts and figures of the country, we have identified five major contested narratives related to (a) Bengali nationalism in East Pakistan, (b) foundational ideology of Bangladesh’s war of liberation, (c) state-sponsored Islamization in Bangladesh, (d) pro-liberation and anti-liberation dichotomy, and (e) war crimes trial. Drawing on a robust content analysis of the credible secondary sources substantiated by qualitative interviews, we have examined these dominant narratives and found that they are not supported by historical evidence and popular mandate, yet have been constructed largely to support and legitimize the current authoritarian regime. The paper offers both counter-narratives and some pragmatic policy recommendations to elude increasing polarization and sociopolitical instability and foster a peaceful democratic society in Bangladesh. -
