Today, traditional media still holds significant power, but the number of influencers out there has shot up exponentially with the explosion of social media in general and YouTube in particular. While the world’s largest video service might be under fire over its (low) royalty rates, the music industry is well aware that its biggest stars offer a direct route to the exact audiences they want their music to reach. We look at who these influencers are, how they can be worked with and the things that will make them back or blank you. etting your act heard used to be, if not exactly easy, then at least relatively Gstraightforward for the music business: you’d schmooze the radio playlist heads, take journalists out to a gig and pray for some TV coverage, all while splashing out on magazine and billboard advertising. The digital era – and especially social media – have shaken this all up. Yes, traditional media is still important; but to this you can add a sometimes bewildering list of “social influencers”, famous faces on platforms like YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram, plus vloggers, Viners and the music marketing meets rest, all of whom (for now) wield an uncanny power over youthful audiences. -

The Chairman welcomed all present to the one hundred and sixtieth meeting of the Content Board. Chairman’s update 2. The Chairman reported on discussions at the September 2019 Ofcom Board meeting and focussed on the main areas of work. 3. At that meeting the Board had appointed Tim Suter as Chairman of Ofcom’s Election Committee. He would appoint members, drawn from the Content Board and/or the Executive, as and when the Committee was required to meet. 4. Over the coming weeks the Chairman would meet with Content Board members, one-to-one, to seek their views on ways of working. You(Tube), Me, and Content ID PAVING THE WAY FOR COMPULSORY SYNCHRONIZATION LICENSING ON USER- GENERATED CONTENT PLATFORMS INTRODUCTION Ever wonder about how the law regulates your cousin’s wedding video posted on her YouTube account? **For release Wednesday 21stJuly** JUDGING PANEL FOR 2021 ROYAL SOCIETY SCIENCE BOOK PRIZE ANNOUNCED “Science communication has always been very important, to entertain, inform and inspire. This has never been more relevant than this year.” – Professor Luke O’Neill #SciBooks The five-strong judging panel for this year’s Royal Society Science Book Prize, sponsored by Insight Investment, is revealed today, Wednesday 21st July 2021. The Prize – which celebrates the very best in popular science writing from around the world – will be chaired in 2021 by world-leading immunologist, presenter and writer, Professor Luke O’Neill FRS. He is joined on the panel by representatives from across the worlds of science and culture: television presenter, Ortis Deley; mathematician and Dorothy Hodgkin Royal Society Fellow, Dr Anastasia Kisil; author and creative writing lecturer, Christy Lefteri, and journalist, writer and film maker, Clive Myrie. For 33 years, the Prize has promoted the accessibility and joy of popular science writing. It has celebrated some truly game-changing reads: books that offer fresh insights on the things that affect the lives we lead and the decisions we make, from neurodiverse perspectives on everyday living (Explaining Humans by Dr Camilla Pang, 2020) to gender bias (Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez, 2019) and the harms humans are wreaking on the planet (Adventures in the Anthropocene by Gaia Vince, 2015, and Six Degrees by Mark Lynas, 2008). In a research note musing, “there’s something happening here,”Nomura analyst Michael Nathanson provided some color about a well known yet nettlesome industry seachange that’s highlighted each year by all the gadgets on display at CES: the rapid decline of live TV viewership. “Thanks to either the continued impact of the DVR, shifts in the Nielsen sample, the NBA strike or slight changes in consumption patterns, live primetime TV viewership declined almost -5% [in 4Q]–now 13 straight quarters of live declines,” said Nathanson. Duh, you say? Such utterers likely wouldn’t be moved by Nathanson’s claim that cable’s live ratings (-5%) fell more than broadcast’s (-3%) in the quarter either—a slew of cable originals count more than 40% time-shifted viewership—but that hasn’t happened in 5 quarters and perhaps more importantly, broadcast C3 viewing rose 0.3% while cable’s dipped 1.1%. -

Archived BBC public responses to complaints 2019 This Week, BBC One, 10 January 2019 Summary of complaint We received complaints from people who felt Owen Jones was treated in a disrespectful manner while appearing as a guest on the programme. Our response Following the verbal abuse which he and others had sustained from protesters outside Parliament, Owen Jones, journalist, left wing commentator and activist, used his “Take of the Week” section to give his personal take on the current state of political discourse, the rise of the far right and, as he deemed, the reasons for this. This is a prominent section of the programme in which the author gives their views unchallenged. During his video and the studio discussion which followed, Mr Jones made allegations about the Conservative Party and right wing media which some would consider contentious. As our audience would expect, Andrew scrutinised what Mr Jones said. Michael Portillo, who disagreed with Mr Jones, also gave his opinion. Mr Jones was given ample time to express his views and respond to points made to him. When Mr Jones made allegations about The Spectator magazine and Andrew’s role with the publication. Andrew legitimately pointed out that this was nothing to do with the BBC and it wasn’t right for Mr Jones to use the programme to make personal accusations against him. Today, BBC Radio 4, 26 January 2019 Summary of complaint We received a range of complaints following the interview of Helen McEntee. Some listeners felt the tone and content were not appropriate, suggesting a personal bias from the interviewer. -

At a time of highly political and polarised debate, the need for accurate, trustworthy and robust journalism is as important as it has ever been. In March, we launched an in-depth review of BBC news and current affairs, putting audiences at the heart of our research. Over the spring and summer, we gathered views from people across the country. We commissioned research to give us a detailed insight into how people get their news, and we looked at the range and depth the BBC offers compared to other news providers. We also spoke to around 50 media organisations, industry bodies and academics across the UK. Here is a summary of our main findings, along with our recommendations to the BBC. We have also published on our website the range of evidence that has informed this. Accuracy is central to the BBC’s reputation The BBC remains the UK’s primary source for news. Despite an uncertain political environment, it has maintained its reputation among most people for trusted and accurate reporting. -
