Ballard 2005 ABSTRACT THE IMPLIED READER IN THE HISPANIC CHILDREN'S LITERATURE OF THE "ENCUENTO" SERIES This dissertation discusses the implied reader in the “EnCuento” series illustrated children’s stories. All the stories are written by well-known Hispanic authors. This work elucidates historical, cultural, and semiotic gaps in the reading process. It explores the ways in which textual elements- such as style, focalization, and manipulation of reader’s expectations - affect the implied reader’s ability to produce or extract meaning. Our study will add to knowledge of the function of the implied reader in children’s texts. This study is divided into four chapters, each focusing on the implied reader. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the series discussing three books that are easy to understand, with simple vocabulary, chronological plots, and strong protagonists. Chapter 2 explores irony in two horror stories; Chapter 3 discusses books that promote a particular ideology. Finally, Chapter 4 explores books with protagonists who are outsiders. The books within each chapter have enough in common in terms of decodability that they seem to pursue the same kind of implied reader. Each chapter illustrates the way that style, point of view, manipulation of reader’s expectations, and telltale gaps affect the implied reader’s ability to make meaning. Within the series, each contributing author creates a system through which the reader can participate in the story. The authors’ intent is to communicate meaning to the implied reader. In sum, interpreting texts is communication between author and reader. In all of the “EnCuento” texts, authors employ response-inviting structures, making them interpretable on many levels. This study further analyzes “EnCuento” stories the better to decide if their primary purpose is didactic. Because of the political content of texts written for adults- as in the case of the stories written by Benedetti, Paz, and Valenzuela - I expected them to communicate a clear political message to their child readers. The thesis also inquires into whether books are, in fact written for children and children exclusively. Because the “EnCuento” authors are accomplished writers of adult literature, this study analyzes the degree to which the authors communicate specifically with a child audience. Finally, the dissertation analyzes the illustrations in several of the texts and finds that book illustrations are essential to making connections with the reader. Hansa Christiana Andersena. Otrzymują ją osoby żyjące, których twórczość jest bardzo ważna dla literatury dziecięcej. Nagroda ta, często nazywana „Małym Noblem”, to najważniejsze międzynarodowe odznaczenie, przyznawane za twórczość dla dzieci. Patronem nagrody jest Jej Wysokość, Małgorzata II, Królowa Danii. Nominacje do tej prestiżowej nagrody zgłaszane są przez narodowe sekcje, a wyboru laureatów dokonuje międzynarodowe jury, w którego skład wchodzą badacze i znawcy literatury dziecięcej. Nagrodę im. H. Ch. Andersena zaczęto przyznawać w 1956 roku, w kategorii Autor, a pierwszy ilustrator otrzymał ją dziesięć lat później. Na nagrodę składają się: złoty medal i dyplom, wręczane na uroczystej ceremonii, podczas Kongresu IBBY. Z okazji przyznania nagrody ukazuje się zawsze specjalny numer czasopisma „Bookbird”, w którym zamieszczane są nazwiska nominowanych, a także sprawozdanie z obrad Jury. Do tej pory żaden polski pisarz nie otrzymał tego odznaczenia, jednak polskie nazwisko widnieje na liście nagrodzonych. W 1982 roku bowiem Małego Nobla otrzymał wybitny polski grafik i ilustrator Zbigniew Rychlicki. Nagroda im. H. Ch. Andersena w 2022 r. Kolejnych zwycięzców nagrody im. Hansa Christiana Andersena poznamy wiosną 2022 podczas targów w Bolonii. Na długiej liście nominowanych, na której jest aż 66 nazwisk z 33 krajów – 33 pisarzy i 33 ilustratorów znaleźli się Marcin Szczygielski oraz Iwona Chmielewska. MARCIN SZCZYGIELSKI Marcin Szczygielski jest znanym polskim pisarzem, dziennikarzem i grafikiem. Jego prace były publikowane m.in. w Nowej Fantastyce czy Newsweeku, a jako dziennikarz swoją karierę związał również z tygodnikiem Wprost oraz miesięcznikiem Moje mieszkanie, którego był redaktorem naczelnym.

Hornby published Juliet, Naked in 2009, where he tackles similar topics to those in High Fidelity. A key difference between these novels is the presence of the Internet in Juliet, Naked, which is not featured in High Fidelity. A comparison of Juliet, Naked and High Fidelity offers an interesting insight into Hornby‟s vision of life before and after the spread of the Internet, and how it has affected the characters‟ obsessions, communication and their lives in general. This essay is, however, not limited to the changes the Internet has brought, as other topics are discussed in the essay‟s several chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction and is followed by a chapter containing background information on both Hornby and the novels, as well as illustrating how these novels were received by critics. The third chapter tackles a dominant theme in both books, obsession, especially male obsession with popular culture. The ensuing chapter deals with love and its complications, and how it is presented in both novels. The fifth chapter focuses on the Internet and the benefits and limitations it brings to modern life.

    Scholarship Boys and Children’s Books: Working-Class Writing for Children in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s Haru Takiuchi Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University, March 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores how, during the 1960s and 1970s in Britain, writers from the working-class helped significantly reshape British children’s literature through their representations of working-class life and culture. The three writers at the centre of this study – Aidan Chambers, Alan Garner and Robert Westall – were all examples of what Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy (1957), termed ‘scholarship boys’. By this, Hoggart meant individuals from the working-class who were educated out of their class through grammar school education. The thesis shows that their position as scholarship boys both fed their writing and enabled them to work radically and effectively within the British publishing system as it then existed. Although these writers have attracted considerable critical attention, their novels have rarely been analysed in terms of class, despite the fact that class is often central to their plots and concerns. This thesis, therefore, provides new readings of four novels featuring scholarship boys: Aidan Chambers’ Breaktime and Dance on My Grave, Robert Westall’s Fathom Five, and Alan Garner’s Red Shift. The thesis is split into two parts, and these readings make up Part 1. Part 2 focuses on scholarship boy writers’ activities in changing publishing and reviewing practices associated with the British children’s literature industry. In doing so, it shows how these scholarship boy writers successfully supported a movement to resist the cultural mechanisms which suppressed working-class culture in British children’s literature.

Five years later, a film with the same title was released world-wide. The film is an adaptation of the novel. I have decided to inspect what changes were made to the original story when it was adapted for the film. There were many changes made that are obvious to those who have both read the story and seen the film, such as the relocation of the setting from London to Chicago. But I found changes such as this one to be merely superficial changes. The changes I wanted to inspect were the ones made to the characters, theme and atmosphere. I found the theory of novel-to-film adaptation is relatively young in many respects. The adaptation process itself is perhaps as old as the cinema itself but the theoretical discussion of the process is by no means as extensive as it perhaps should be, considering how many novels and other literary works have been adapted for films. Critics have many times criticized film adaptations for not being as good as the original work. I found that his criticism can be unfair, as many adapted films are not trying to reproduce the original work but to reinvent it for a new format. This is the approach I wanted to make when inspecting the film adaptation of High Fidelity .

As children’s literature researcher Laura Apol (1998) explained, “Children’s literature is a form of education and socialization, an indication of a society’s deepest hopes and fears, expectations and demands. It presents to children the values approved by adult society and (overtly or covertly) attempts to explain, justify, and even impose on its audience what could be considered ‘correct’ patterns of behavior and belief.” Examining children’s literature from communities around the globe helps us to identify and better understand many of the political, social, and economic issues various countries face and how they respond and understand these issues in ways both similar and different from how other countries might. We will begin by examining the different definitions of what constitutes international children’s and adolescent literature. We will explore and become familiar with the international literature currently being published in different parts of the world for children and adolescents as well as the international literature that is available in the United States. We will explore the major issues that surround global children’s and adolescent literature, such as cultural authenticity (Who has the “right” to write about a particular culture? What makes a particular book an accurate representation of a certain culture, and who should be the judge of that?) and the differences from country to country in using children’s and adolescent literature in school settings.

  • Semanario JAQUE
    Semanario JAQUE A partir del triunfo del NO al proyecto militar de la dictadura, plebiscitado en 1980, se abrió un espacio público que resulta central para entender la historia de aquellos años: los semanarios. Un hito en la historia del periodismo nacional. El proceso militar tenía una gran capacidad de presionar de muchas maneras a los grandes medios de la prensa escrita, radial o televisiva, entre ellas económicamente ya que el equilibrio de dichas empresas contaba imprescindiblemente con la publicidad estatal. Recuérdese que Uruguay es un pequeño país con un Estado grande. Surgió así a través de pequeñas empresas -cuyas publicaciones no tenían publicidad estatal- una válvula de escape en el oprimido ambiente de la dictadura: los semanarios. Entre los semanarios JAQUE tuvo un enorme impacto por su fuerte impronta de periodismo cultural y de investigación que desarrollaba al servicio del arco democrático, lo que supuso un gran tiraje semanal. Había semanarios para traducir la sensibilidad de las tres corrientes de opinión del país, pero todos mostraban un pluralismo que fue imprescindible para derrotar al autoritarismo. JAQUE se destacó en este campo, pero no debe olvidarse, por ejemplo, que Opinar tenía de columnistas permanentes a ciudadanos que, dada su conocida filiación política, luego tuvieron los más altos destinos públicos desde las otras vertientes de opinión. JAQUE articuló en ese tiempo por lo menos tres operaciones intelectuales y políticas trascendentes. 1.- Arrinconar al régimen autoritario. Por un lado, fue centralmente funcional a la estrategia del arco opositor particularmente entre el casi año que transcurre entre el fracaso de las negociaciones llamadas del Parque Hotel (1983) y las negociaciones del Club Naval (1984).
