CENTER FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF PUBLIC ACTION The Center’s curricular offerings address the challenges of effective citizenship in today’s world, inviting students to study the world’s most urgent problems as well as to confront what it means to attend to them. Bennington’s longstanding commitment to educating students toward constructive social purposes is evident throughout the curriculum as a whole; courses offered through the Center focus attention on pressing and evolving issues such as education, the environment, health, the distribution of wealth, the uses of force, and governance. Featured content areas will include media, religion, and law. The Center will also provide regular opportunities to acquire or build upon the capacities and skills necessary to effect change, among them design, rhetoric, mediation, improvisation, and negotiation. Related courses can be found throughout the curriculum. ADVANCEMENT OF PUBLIC ACTION APA2112.01 Rhetoric: The Art and Craft of Persuasion Karen Gover The ability to speak and write persuasively is an essential skill for everyone. Whether you are writing a plan essay, applying for a job, or running for public office, you need to be persuasive and compelling. This course is a practical workshop in rhetoric. Students will write, deliver, and critique short (two‐minute) persuasive speeches in each class. We will learn classic rhetorical terms and techniques, and apply them in our analysis of famous political speeches. At the end of the course, students will compete by delivering a five‐minute speech on a topic of their choice to a distinguished panel of judges. Prerequisites: None. Credits: 4 Time: MTh 4:10 ‐ 6pm 1 Fall 2012 Curriculum – Updated 08/28/12 APA2150.01 APA Workshop: Focus: Cities Eileen Scully In 2008, for the first time in human history, more people inhabited cities than the countryside. Cities have always played a fundamental role in the economic and cultural development of human society. Many of society’s greatest challenges are intensified by the density of urban populations: slums, crime, poor educational and health outcomes, environmental hazards, and more. Yet increasingly, cities are being viewed as potential laboratories for solving many of these same challenges. This is as true in the developed world as it is in the developing world. The focus of this workshop will be to look at cities through the lens of public action. How can we understand more about the role cities play in contemporary human society? How can we take advantage of what cities have to offer in terms of large‐scale public problem solving? As a CAPA workshop, this course will be one of shared discovery. It is not a course on urban planning or a history of cities, though we will likely learn about both. The method of the course will be to read together and to investigate what cities have to offer us in terms of public action. We will have a shared reading list to get us started, but the curriculum will adapt as we work together to understand better the subject we are exploring. Work will include frequent reading responses, in class presentations, and a final independent project of your design that looks at how cities and

Senior women are incapable of reproduction, mastering their bodies, or arousing sexual desire in themselves or others. The senior actresses’ I explore in the case studies below insert their performances of self and their everyday lives into the large and complicated discourse of sex, producing a counter-narrative to sexually inactive senior women. Their performances actively embody their sexuality outside the frame of a character. This thesis examines how senior actresses’ performances of sexuality extend a discourse of sexuality imposed on older woman by mass media. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency.

    I. Problem For most of its history Spain had been a country of emigration—sending laborers abroad to find employment. But the latter quarter of the 20th century has seen Spain‟s status shift from a country of emigration to a country of immigration, attracting thousands upon thousands of foreign born individuals to live and work in the southern European state. Immigrants to Spain come from diverse locations: From 1995 to 2000, 40.4 percent of the legal foreign residents in Spain were from a European region of origin, followed by 29.2 percent of which were of African origin, 22.3 percent of Latin American origin, 7.9 percent of Asian origin and 0.2 percent from Oceania or other origin.”1 And the number of immigrants keeps expanding, as is evident from this information in a 2005 BBC article: The number of foreigners living in Spain has nearly quadrupled over the last five years. No other European country has experienced such a rapid rise in its number of immigrants. In 2000, there were about 900,000 immigrants registered as living in Spain. [In 2005] there [were] 3.5 million. [From the year 2000-2005] it [was] an increase of almost 400%.2 Of course Spain has had its share of troubles: years of civil strife, a crushing dictatorship led by Francisco Franco and a faltering economy were factors that led to Spain‟s status as a country of emigration as Spaniards left their homeland to find stability and jobs in Northern Europe. However, following the end of Francisco Franco‟s reign and with Spain‟s accession to the European Union (EU), Spain has gone from a sending country to a transit country and finally to its current status as a destination country for migrants.
