This week in State Park Speedway history: August 16, 1973: Nekoosa’s Marv Marzofka won his second straight feature and his fourth of the season at State Park Speedway, outlasting Jim Back, Larry Detjens and Rich Somers for the win. Bob Mackesy won the semi-feature in a race where Brian Redmond of Mosinee flipped off the fourth turn as the cars took the white flag. He was unhurt. Ken Dhein of Wisconsin Rapids won the hobby stock trophy dash while Glen Hessey of Mosinee won the class’s heat race.

August 20, 1987: Chuck Green of Arpin won his second feature of the season at State Park Speedway in his silver and maroon No. 73 car, using the outside line to hold off Kevin Cywinski and later Steve Holzhausen for the 30-lap win. It was also Green’s second career feature win at SPS. Kirby Kurth won the semi-feature while Randy Buelow, Bobby Stolze and Tom Reffner won heat races. Nick Erickson of Schofield won the hobby stock feature over Shane Sparks, while Jeff Kostroski claimed the bomber race.

August 20, 1998: Donnie Woller of Merrill won his second late model feature of the season at State Park Speedway, getting by Keith Witt late and holding off Mark Mackesy in the 30-lap feature. Dale Louze won the bomber feature, taking the lead with three laps left in the 25-lap feature. Jeremy Switlick won the pure stocks feature and Dan Dye was awarded the legends feature win after apparent win- ner Pat Hinner was docked two positions for a deemed illegal three-wide pass in the race.

One year ago: Luke Fenhaus won his first feature of the season and claimed the Wayne Lodholz Memorial for the third straight year, passing Justin Mondeik for the lead on lap 51 and leading the rest of the way. Mitch Stankowski stayed hot late in the season in the pure stocks with his second straight feature win, Greg Blount won his fifth feature of the season in the mini mods, Eric Breitenfeldt was best in the mini stocks and Alex Hartwig won his fifth feature of the season and the championship in the Bandoleros. Wayne Lodholz The Wayne Lodholz Memorial race started in 2009 in honor of the popular racer from Wausau who competed at State Park Speedway and other area tracks for three decades. Driving his familiar No. 66 car, he was a frontrunner in the late model class in the 1980s and 90s, winning 19 late model features at SPS and finishing as high as second in the point standings in 1989. ‘Lodi’, as he was known, passed away in 2007 and the race in his memory was established two years later.

Name: Rayce Haase Age: 22 Hometown: Wausau, Wis. Occupation: Counter Sales Representative Years racing/classes: I have been racing cars for five years. Started out racing go-karts at Ringle Brickyard Speedway in 2009, started racing 4-cylinders in 2016, then jumped to a limited late model in 2018 and now a super late model in 2021. Pit crew: Dad Jesse Haase (crew Chief), Tyler Schuett, Dave Macomber, John Scutkowski, Bryce Vannes, Ryan Wolfe, Troy Bessert Sponsors: Badgerland Overhead Doors; KRH Racing; Advantage Enterprises; El Tequila Salsa; A&A Lock Service; Riverview Wash Haus; Aftershock Bar and Grill; Flipside Graphics; Billy’s Bar; Swagger Inn; Ted’s Steel and Scrap Metal; U-Bake; Super Mike. How did you get your car number? My late grandpa (former SPS late model champion Rick Haase) got 02 from (former racer) Dick Schultz because he ran the number 20, so my grandpa flipped it and its been in the family ever since. When/how did you get into racing? I have been going to the races since I was 2 months old and I have always gone back. Was there ever a time when you didn’t think you would get into racing? I always knew I would spend my summers at the track and I always wanted to race super late models at State Park Speedway. I don’t think there was ever a question if I would race I always knew this was what I was born to do. Family who has raced before you: Third generation super late model driver. My dad Jesse Haase raced, my grandpa Rick Haase raced, and my cousin Cole Yach used to race super lates as well. What does it mean to me to keep the family tradition alive with your grandpa (Rick Haase) passing this spring? It means the world to me to have the opportunity to keep the tradition alive, there is definitely a lot of pressure to perform well after my dad and grandpa both have had championships and won many big races throughout the state. I am very lucky to surround myself with knowledge- able people and I think we are very capable to win races. With my grandpa passing it has made me want to push more and dig deep to preform for him. Favorite racing memories: My favorite racing memory is when I was able to help my dad win the Lodi Memorial in 2012. I was on the pit crew and my dad gave me responsibilities on the car and I felt like I was apart of the crew, it was a very special win for him also as it would be his last victory. What do I enjoy most about State Park Speedway: State Park will always be my home, I have been coming here for as long as I can remember, It means a lot to race and have people there who watched my grandpa and dad win there. I see a lot of people there that I can remember from back when I was just five years old, and to race at a place where my grandpa’s pictures are in the speedway bar is very cool. Career racing goals: My biggest goal in racing is to win all three memorial races at State Park and I would love to be able to win a championship there as well. Favorite activities besides racing: There isn’t anything that compares to racing for me although I do enjoy spending time with my family and hunting deer with my dad when I am not racing. Favorite food: My favorite food to eat would be a good burger, I am a simple man… Favorite place to eat: My favorite place to eat would have to be Phil’s Round 2 for fish.
