Larry Detjens The Larry Detjens Memorial race started in 1981 in honor of Larry Detjens, one of the greatest short track racers of his time. Detjens was a native of Wausau and a racing star whose accomplishments included the 1977 State Park Speedway late model track championship, nine wins on the ARTGO circuit and the first Slinger Nationals title. Larry was the uncle of State Park Speedway owner and brother Chris and best friend of co-owner Ron Wimmer. Larry passed away in an accident at Wisconsin International Raceway in Aug. 1981, and a memorial race was established at State Park Speedway that year. The race in his memory has been one of the biggest in the state for many years since.

Driver Profile: Kole Ferge

Age: 29 Family: Wife Nicole, son Zayn, and baby due at end of July. Where live: Edgar, Wis. Occupation: Maintenance at Aspirus Wausau Hospital Years racing/classes: Four years. Two years in mini stock class (2018, 2019-class champion at State Park Speedway both years), one year in pure stocks (2020), now this year in mini mods, where his competitors include cousin Chad Ferge. Pit crew: Wade LaFave, Harold Ferge. I have a lot of other help outside the track but those two are there every week for me. Sponsors: BRB Auto Body; Charlie’s Bar; Arrow Tap Bar and Grill; DDK Lawn and Snow Services; Images By Kelly; Kim’s BS Sauce; A&A Lock Service; Cranky Jake Mobile Welding; TGB Tuned; Seliger Motorsports; Laser Images; Hilltop Auto Wrecking. This year’s unique car, which is painted, not wrapped: This year my car was painted by Taylor Yach at BRB. I didn’t come up with the idea-that was all his doing. I told him he could do whatever he wanted an that’s what he came up with. How did you get your car number? I got my car number because of a great friend Robb Wruck. Me and my dad helped him for years and after his passing I wanted to keep the 32 going in his memory no matter what class I ran and it has just stuck. When/how did you get into racing? I got into racing back when I was a young kid. My dad races years ago and also my grandpa would take me to SPS every Thursday to watch. Once I got older I became great friends with Grandpa Bob Dalsky and he kinda took me under his wing an took me to race tracks all over the place. Favorite racing memories: Oh boy. I’m not sure where to start. I’ve had so many memories over the last four years. If I had to pick it would be all the great fellow racers that I have became friends with. What do you enjoy most about State Park Speedway? My favorite thing about SPS is racing in front of a hometown crowd that come out week after week to support local racing! Career racing goals you have? My career goals for racing will be no more then what I’m doing today. Take it year by year and just enjoy the surrounds at the track. You’ve raced in three different classes-do you have a certain one you enjoy best, and if so why? I really don’t have a favorite class that I raced. I enjoyed all of them so far just because I’ve meet so many great people in every division. Favorite leisure activities besides racing: Hunt, fish, spending time at the cabin with family, help others people with their race cars Favorite food: Steak, pizza, any grilled food or deep fried
