THE WRITING PUBLIC Introduction On February 12, 1786, a letter to the editor appeared in the Affiches du Beauvaisis that described how readers interacted with the newspaper. The anonymous writer explained to the editor, “Your weekly papers are a sort of literary arena, where every athlete should have the right to present oneself, to choose an adversary and to combat them, without however, straying from the bounds of decency and one’s public and private honesty.” He expressed his disagreement with a letter to the editor in the previous week’s newspaper, but he assured the editor that he intended only to combat his interlocutor in the press and to adhere to sociable norms of civility and honest conduct. 1 Newspapers like the Affiches du Beauvaisis formed a collective space that invited participation. In conceptualizing the newspaper as an arena, this writer reflected a sense of the affiches as a site for the horizontal exchange of ideas where writers could grapple with new information and with one another. While this writer addressed the Affiches du Beauvaisis in particular , his comments described an entire genre of general information newspapers commonly referred to by historians as “the information press,” which bur- geoned in the 1770s and 1780s and persisted throughout the early years of the Revolution. 2 Such newspapers shared two key characteristics—a capacious coverage of various subject matter and the publication of letters from their readers. The editors of both Parisian and provincial newspapers 1 2 INTRODUCTION expressed the same goal that this writer identified: to invite their readers into the conversation. Between 1770 and 1791, thousands of letters to the editor appeared in such newspapers, where writers participated in an itera- tive process of debate and exchange. The newspapers that made up the information press proliferated after mid-century in Paris and in the provinces, where they appeared under such titles as Affiches, annonces, et avis divers , and were known generically as affiches.

    EXTENSION ACTIVITIES – Jacques-Louis David’s ‘Oath of the Tennis Court’, 1791 Read the discussion of Jacques-Louis-David’s ‘Oath of the Tennis Court’ (1791) on p. 3-8 of this handout. Then complete the following extension activities: 1. One of the big problems which faced David as the Revolution progressed was that many of the figures to whom he had given prominence in the 1791 drawing fell from favour as political conditions changed. Using Liberating France (including the Who’s Who) and other sources, find out what happened to Mounier, Mirabeau, Bailly, Barère, Barnave, and Robespierre. Then research the clergymen, Abbé Grégoire and Abbé Sieyès. 2. David alludes to the popular movement which became known as the sans-culottes through the strong and robust figure in the red bonnet of liberty in the lower left hand corner.     South Atlantic Quarterly Camille Robcis The Biopolitics of Dignity “Let us not allow, within a free nation, monuments of slavery, even voluntary.” —Pierre Anastase Torné, French deputy, April 6, 1792 A few days after the shocking attacks on the ofces of Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, several French political leaders called for the revival of the “crime of national indignity” as a possible sanction against terrorists of French citizenship. As the prime minister Manuel Valls put it, such a measure—backed up, according to surveys, by 76 percent of the French population—would “mark with symbolic force the consequences of the absolute transgression that a terrorist act con- stitutes” (Clavel 2015). Under French law, national indignity did indeed have a particular history and signifcation, one that was not simply “symbolic” but in fact quite concrete. As the historian Anne Simonin (2008) shows, “national indignity” was invented in 1944 by the legal experts of the Resis- tance as an exceptional measure to punish, retro- actively, the supporters of the Vichy regime who had collaborated with the Nazi occupiers and pro- moted anti-Semitic legislation.
